一. The suffixes –ment, -ation, -tion, -sion and –ion are added to verbs to form nouns. The suffix –able can be added to verbs to form adjective meaning able to be –ved, worthy of being ved or that ought to be ved. Add –able to the following verbs to form adjectives. Desire---desirable Favor---favorable Consider---considerable Accept---acceptable Drink---drinkable Advise---advisable Remark---remarkable Prefer---preferable 1. The suffix –er or –or can be added to a verb to form a noun which refers to the person who performs the action of the verb. Sometimes a noun formed in this way refers to an object instead of a person. For example: Mountain---mountainous: having a lot of mountains Joy-joyous: full of joy The suffix –al can also be added to nouns to form adjective with the meaning “related to ” or “of ”. for example: Culture-cultural: of or related to culture Tradition---traditional: of or related to tradition Now form adjectives by adding –ous or –al to the nouns given below. Make changes in spelling where necessary. 1. relation 2. citizen 3. leader 4. member 5. boy 6. lively 7. brother 8. author 9. adult 10. neighbor 11. wise 12. owner The suffix –ness can be added to adjectives to form nouns with the meaning of “the quality” or “conditions of being” For example Great---greatness Cold---coldness Add –ness to the adjectives given below. Make changes in spelling where necessary. Then complete the followiing sentences with some of the nouns thus formed. Weak Kind Happy Sad Strange Ill Easy Tired Dark Lazy Nervous Careless The suffix-y can be added to nouns to form adjective with the meaning of full of, covered with, having the quality of, or inclined to. For example: Cloudy Sandy Snoy Sleepy Now form adjectives by adding –y to the nouns listd below. Make changes in spelling where necessary. Then complete the following sentences with some the adjective thus formed.
