The scientists say that the human body has changed very little since human first appeared on earth, but the way we live has changed greatly. Our body has not been able to deal with these changes in life style and this has led to new kinds of sicknesses. These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times. So they are called “diseases of civilization”.Many cancers and diseases of the blood system, including heart attacks and strokes(中风)are examples of such diseases. Scientists noted that early stone-age people used very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none.Ancient people also got a great deal of physical exercise, but a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and life today. Stone-age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than farm animals. They also ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables, and fruits. They did not use milk and other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. But today, we eat a large amount of dairy products and grain foods. We eat six times more salt than stone-age people. We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C. People today probably do not want to live as people thousands of years ago did, but scientists say that we would be much healthier if we ate as those ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet foods. 26.The people in industrial nations would be much healthier if they ate ________. A.more foods as humans living 10,000 years ago did B.as humans living 10,000 years ago C.more kinds of food eaten by people living over 10,000 years ago D.more of the same kinds of foods eaten by people over 10,000 years ago. 27.New kinds of sicknesses have been found because ________. A.the human body has changed compared with human first appeared on earth B.the way we live has changed a little C.our body can’t deal with the changes in life style D.the way we live today is proper for the human body 28.What is the main cause mentioned in the article why people suffer from a lot of new sicknesses? A.Ancient people did a great deal of physical exercise B.People today have a lot of alcohol C.People today have more tobacco D.Food is quite different between life today and life in ancient times 29.Stone-age people were much healthier than people today because they ate a lot of _______________. A.milk and other dairy products B.grain foods and farm animals C.salt and sugar D.wild animals, fresh wild vegetables and fruits 30.From this article, we know that ____________are not good to our health. A.protein and vitamin C B.milk and grain foods C.wild animals, vegetables and fruits D.a huge amount of fatty, salty and sweet foods B It’s hardly surprising that weather is a favorite topic for so many people around the world---it affects where we choose to live, what we wear, our moods, and perhaps even our national characteristics. Studies have shown that changeable weather can make it difficult to concentrate, cloudy skies slow down reaction, and high humidity with hot, dry winds makes many people bad-tempered. If you live in a place like Britain, where the weather seems to change daily if not hourly, you could be forgiven for thinking that the weather is random. In fact, the weather is controlled by systems which move around areas of the globe. In the UK the weather depends on depressions, often called lows, and anticyclones, also known as highs. These systems start in the Atlantic Ocean, and make their way across the British Isles from the west to the east. Highs bring sunny weather, while lows bring rain and wind. In modern times, human activities seem to be altering weather patterns. Gases produced by heavy industry change the temperature of the Earth’s surface, and affect cloud formation. Some researchers say that factories in Europe and North America may have been one of the causes of the droughts in Africa in the 1980s. The human race has always tried to guess the weather, especially in areas of the world where there are frequent changes. Traditional rhymes point to early attempts to identify weather patterns, popular poems include: Red sky at night, shepherds’ delight; red sky in the morning, shepherds’ warning. Flies will swarm before a storm. Rain before 7, clear by 11. While folk wisdom can still provide a guide to help forecast weather, today’s methods of prediction increasingly rely on technology. Satellites, balloons, ships, aircrafts and weather centers with sensitive monitoring equipment, send data to computers. The data is then processed, and the weather is predicted. However, even this system cannot predict weather for longer than about a week. 31. When weather keeps changing, ______________________. A. people become bad-tempered B. people’s reaction slows down C. people find it hard to focus on their work D. people become hungrier 32. What is mainly talked about in the second paragraph? A. Changes in weather. B. Weather in Britain. C. African droughts. D. Research on weather. 33. The weather in Britain is ____________________. A. random B. moist C. depressing D. satisfying 34. According to a traditional rhyme, if there is a red sky at night, the next day will be _____. A. windy B. rainy C. fine D. snowy 35. Which of the following statements is true? A. Anticyclones often bring rain and wind. B. Weather forecasting has been done for a long time. C. Weather could never be predicted. D. Modern methods of weather prediction are developed from folk wisdom. C A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift——$7,000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially,” says Dave. But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $100,000. It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million——they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm. Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They like comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase. Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything.” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden. “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.” Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy, a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents, should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come. Neighbors helping neighbors----that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story. 36.According to the text, the Fusses_________. A. were employed by a truck company B. were in financial difficulty C. worked in a school cafeteria D. lost their home 37. Which of the following is true of the Hatches? A. They had their children during the Great Depression. B. They left the family farm to live in an old house. C. They gave away their possessions to their neighbors. D. They helped their neighbors to find jobs 38. Why would the Hatches routinely go from store to store? A. They decided to open a store. B. They wanted to save money. C. They couldn’t afford expensive things. D. They wanted to buy gifts for local kids. 39. According to Sandy Van Weelden, the Hatches were ________. A. understanding B. optimistic C. childlike D. curious 40. What can we learn from the text? A. The community of Alto was poor. B. The summer camp was attractive to the parents. C. Sandy Van Weelden got a legacy from the Hatches D. The Hatches would like the neighbors to follow their example. D Sometime early in the next century, human beings will move to Mars. They will live there for about a year, and then will be replaced with another group of pioneers. Building the base on Mars will advance our knowledge of the solar system and aid in our understanding of the earth. We already know that Mars resembles the earth in many aspects: general size, presence of water, length of day, range of temperatures. These resemblances have caused many people to consider a centuries-long project: to terraform Mars. Terraforming means altering a planet’s surface so that Earth’s life forms can survive there. This concept, previously found only in science fiction is now being seriously considered by scientists. Terraforming Mars is theoretically simple: add nitrogen and oxygen to the atmosphere; pump water to the surface; and add the earth’s plants and animals in the order in which they developed on Earth. But it will take at least 300 years. Some people think that such a project is too huge for humans to undertake, but there are very good reasons to make the attempt. The earth now contains some 6 billion people, and no one has any idea of how many humans the earth can support. Our very existence and numbers are threatening many other species. We also have had some experience with terraforming our own planet: altering the landscape, the atmosphere and the climate. Currently terraforming earth has become a wiser activity as we try to control global warming, air and water pollution, and preserve some natural living places. While the possibility of such a project is small, it is not impossible. Even if earth-bound societies come and go in the next 300 years, the project can continue through the work of the Mars settlers without the need for constant backing from the earth. The future existence of all the people in our world may very well depend upon our ability to ter- 配套讲稿:
