Reading Comprehension (40 points) A There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the students whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language ---- all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts. By contrast (对照), the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have, and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept. In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick or as curious? If so, we tend to take more changes and to be shy and indecisive. Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we are slow to adapt to change or that we are not smart enough to deal with a new challenge? Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all. These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not face and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making. 56. In the author’s eyes, one who views personal growth as a process would_________ . A. succeed in climbing up the social ladder B. judge his ability to grow from his own achievements C. face difficulties and take up challenges D. aim high and reach his goal each time 57. Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growth? A. Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges. B. Little Tom won the first prize in the speech contest. C. Mary picked up French while she was in Paris. D. Father’s salary rose from $2,000 to $3,000. 58. For personal growth, the author advocates(提倡)all of the following except __________. A. curiosity about more challenges B. quickness in self-adaptation C. open-mindedness to new experiences D. avoidance of internal fears and doubts 59. The best title for this passage should be _______________. A. Encountering New Challenges B. Growth –Product or Process C. Unavoidable Feeling of Self-doubt D. Overcoming Internal Fears B When I come across a good essay in reading newspapers, I often feel like cutting and keeping it. But just as I am about to do so, I find the article on the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to keep in good health, or advice about how to be oneself in society. If I cut the front essay, the opposite one is bound to suffer damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text without the subject. As a result, the scissors would stay before they start, or halfway done when I find out the result that inevitably causes my regret. Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both deserving (worthy) your attention. You can only take up one of them, the other has to wait or be given up. But you know the future is unpredictable — the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left behind. Thus you are caught in a fix and feel sad. How come that nice opportunities and brilliant ideas should gather around all at once? It may happen that your life changes dramatically on your preference of one alternative (choice) to the other. In fact, that is what life is like: we are often faced with the two opposite sides of a thing which are both desirable like newspaper cutting. It often occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only after we take up another. The former may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divided mind. I still remember a philosopher’s (哲学家) remarks: “ When one door shuts, another opens in life. ” So a passive choice may not be a bad one. Whatever we do in our lifetime, wherever life’s storm makes us go, there must be something we can achieve, some shore we can land on. Don’t forget God always keeps an alternative door open for everyone. While the front door is closed, there must be another open for you. 60. The main idea of the passage is________. A. where there is a will, there is a way B. cutting newspapers gives us a lesson C. all roads lead to Rome D. an equal chance is provided for everyone. 61. After reading the passage, we may know the writer is a person of ______. A. observation B . curiosity C. encouragement D. consideration 62. The word “fix” in “you are caught in a fix” in paragraph 2 refers to ______. A. difficult situation B. your preference of one choice C. what is left behind D. two things are to be done at the same time 63. The underlined part in the passage tells us _________. A. life is like cutting newspapers B. we can’t kill two birds with one stone C. life sometimes changes completely D. it is often difficult to make a choice in our life 64. Which of the statements below is true according to the passage? A. Cutting newspapers is a hard job. B. When you are caught in a fix, you have met two good things. C.
