Sarah: Now a Great Grandmother B Air traffic controllers in the US have been advised to take a 26-minute nap(小睡), after a series of accidents involving workers falling asleep. Now the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is calling for “controlled naps” during night shifts(夜班). NTSB member, Mark Rosekind, said that a 26-minute nap would improve performance by 34%. He believes that the aviation(航空) industry, other professions such as those that involve driving and operating machinery, also carry obvious risks. But other experts doubt whether 26 minutes is the appropriate nap time. It’s a bit too long and there is a risk that you will fall into a deep sleep, says Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Council. He said, “ A nap of about 15 minutes is best; once you get beyond 20 minutes, you risk going into a deep sleep and you can be much more tired when you wake up. Therefore, we suggest that a nap be combined with a cup of coffee so that you can enjoy an effective sleep before the caffeine (咖啡因) takes effect in about 20 minutes. However, this method only works on those who have had a poor night’s sleep. If you haven’t had a wink of sleep the night before, this method won’t be enough to refresh you. Health writer Linda Wasmer Andrews also believes that 26 minutes is too long. She says a nap between 10 to 20 minutes is enough, and that the timing of the nap is also important. Putting your head down too early means your body may not be ready to sleep yet, but a nap that is too late in the day might make it harder to fall asleep at night. Early in the afternoon is often the best time, from 1 pm to 3 pm, when people experience a post-lunch decrease in energy. 31. What is the passage mainly about? A. People who need a nap. B. The reason why people need a nap. C. When people take a nap. D. How long a nap should last. 32. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. People who work at night need a nap. B. Air traffic controllers hope they can take a nap. C. Caffeine makes people awake about 20 minutes later. D. For some professions, a nap can reduce the occurrence of accidents. 33. Jim Horne thinks that a 26-minute nap is not appropriate because _________. A. it’s a little bit long for people who didn’t sleep the night before B. people risk going into a deep sleep beyond 20 minutes and feeling more tired C. people who have had a poor sleep need more nap time D. only with caffeine do people feel fresh after a 26-minute nap 34. According to Linda Wasmer Andrews, _________. A. 2 pm is an appropriate time for a nap B. people’s energy will increase after lunch C. your body is ready to sleep early in the day D. a late nap may keep you awake for the whole night 35. You can most probably read this article in a __________. A. science newspaper B. book review C. newspaper D. history book C Besides, you may notice that the organic food is more expensive. In fact, organic food often costs 50% to 100% more than similar brands of conventionally grown food. Keep in mind that organic food is a big business. It is not usually about buying from a small local farm any more. In fact, many smaller organic food companies have been bought out by large multinational food companies. Becoming a big business has meant that some organic foods and their ingredients are in short supply. Thus some unscrupulous people are cheating the organic rules. Many experts feel that big business and organic farming may not mix. Organic food is an option for those parents who want it, and you may also choose to buy other conventionally grown food. But Consumer Reports points out that “It’s worth paying more for organic apples, peaches, milk, and beef. This can help you avoid chemicals found in the conventionally produced foods.” The best way to make sure you are buying organic food may be to grow it on your own or buy it from a local farm. And you can find it by searching at Local Harvest or by visiting your local farmers’ market. 36. Which is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Organic food is usually more expensive. B. You can buy organic food from a local farm. C. Organic food has many benefits for children. D. Big companies may not sell organic food. 37. How does the USDA make sure the food is organic? A. We may read this passage probably in the __________ section of a newspaper. A. health B. fashion C. science D. business D In most sporting disciplines, the age of 26 is regarded as, politely, being on the more mature side. However, it is not so in curling (冰壶运动),where the steady hands and rich experience of the older players often prove decisive on the ice. With an average age of 26, the Chinese women’s curling team showed youth is not necessarily an obstacle(障碍) on the road to success. In the Winter Olympic Games, the Chinese women bounced back from a semifinal loss to the present champion Sweden to earn a bronze medal, beating Switzerland 12-6 in a shortened eight-end match. It was China’s first Winter Olympic medal in a team event. “I think our young ages have worked for and against us,” said the team leader Wang Bingyu. “As we are young, we are full of fighting spirit but, on the other hand, we are not mature enough to handle all the situations and we are not always calm. Sometimes we think too simply. At these games we have learned so much and we are more mature now.” The sport of curling started in Scotland in the 16th century. In this sport, players slide a heavily-polished stone down the ice towards the target—known as the “house”. It did not come to China until 1995, when a group of curling experts from Japan and Canada provided training and equipment. The Chinese national team was formed in 2000 but there are only about 100 players in the country and most of them are young. Despite that, the team has managed to make quick progress on the world stage. “We have been together for several years… not very long. So we have to thank our family and curling fans in China. A lot of people have shown such kindness and we were glad to be able to reward them with our performance,” second thrower Yue Qingshuang said. 41. What plays an important role in the sport of curling? A. Players’ weights. B. Players’ experience. C. Players’ height. D. Players’ spirit. 42. What can we conclude from Wang Bingyu’s word’s? A. Being young has many advantages. B. Being young has brought them a lot of trouble. C. Being young means they always think in a simple way. D. Being young has both advantages and disadvantages. 43. When did the curling sport come to China? A. 100 years ago. B. 16 years ago. C. 10 years ago. D. 5 years ago. 44.
