新东方商务英语 - 商务与生活 Housing 住房 1. 租公寓 Rent a House In Apartment Complex Prospective Renter: I'm calling about your advertisement for an apartment. Leasing Agent: Yes, we've got great beachside apartments, all newly renovated. Prospective Renter: That sounds fantastic! But I need something closer to downtown, as I spent most of my time at the office. Leasing Agent: No problem. We have a nice apartment complex located in the downtown area. It's perfect for the business professional. Fully furnished luxury apartments, with a service staff in the lobby to take care of the trivial details of your home life while you are at work. <公寓单元楼;配齐家具的豪华公寓> Prospective Renter: I'm sure they're wonderful, but I need an unfurnished apartment in a more economical price range. Leasing Agent: Ah! I get the picture. We have just what you need. Our Riverside View apartments have several floor plans (建筑平面图). The junior one-bedroom apartments are very economical, but their layout makes great use of a small amount of space. And the complex overlooks Riverside Drive near the business district. Prospective Renter: Great! I'll call the complex manager and arrange a viewing at lunchtime. 2. 重新装修 Redecorating Wife: You're off to Home Depot again (又要去)? What big home improvement project do you have up your sleeve (尚未告知别人的主意) now? Husband: Nothing much, honey. I'm just going to look at some of their building materials that are on sale and see if a new project comes to mind. Wife: Oh no! I hope you don't get one more project on your do-it-yourself list. Maybe while you're at the store you could pick up some weather stripping (门窗封闭材料)to winterize (使防冻,使御寒) our house. Husband: Honey, I'm all for energy efficiency, but it's only July! 我完全赞成 Wife: Yes, but your "to do" list is so long! Maybe if you get started now, the winterizing project will get done by November. Husband: All right! I'll pick up some weather stripping, and I'll have it installed before you know it. 3. 家庭改建 Home Improvement Woman: I'm thinking of redecorating my bathroom. We're selling our house and we need to update the basic look. Store Clerk: You've come to the right place, ma'am! In fact, if you've brought some photos of your bathroom, I can give you expert advice on redecorating and remodeling. Woman: I've already decided that I should get a more modern color than the 1970's dull olive that is in my bathroom now. I'm afraid that what I really need most is helpful tips on how to install new home appliances myself. Store Clerk: We've got a great selection of (很多) neutral colors for the bathroom, with matching fabrics for curtains and linens. Woman: Great! A coordinated look reflects professional renovations. I think my house will sell quickly ... Uh, once I get this big project finished, that is. 4. 搬家 Moving Out Son: I've found the perfect apartment! And it fits in perfectly with my budget - only 200 dollars a month! Dad: That is a steal. Does it have the amenities you wanted? 生活福利设施 Son: Yeah, pool, clubhouse, a laundry room, 24-hour security patrols, free maintenance, and all utilities paid! Dad: Sounds great! Let's go. 6 别墅(2)Vacation property Husband: I've been looking into vacation homes. I think we should consider buying one. Wife: How could we afford such a luxury? Husband: Think of it as an investment in our health, peace and enjoyment of life. Look at the picture of this beautiful and secluded lakeside property. Wife: What an amazing view! Still health and peace don't pay the bills. Husband: True, but it's prime real estate with proven resale and high rental value. It would also be an investment in our future. Wife: And it is nice to get away from the daily grind now and again. Maybe we can afford it after all. Shopping 购物 1. 冲动的顾客 Impulse Shopper Wife: Jim, help me with these bags, will you? Last year he bought me a washing machine, and this week it was a new refrigerator. B: How does he pay for all that? A: Oh, that's easy. The store lets you buy them on credit, and they also have a great layaway plan. 分期付款购买法 B: Well, I guess that explains why your kitchen and laundry room are so well equipped. A: B: 3. 花店 Florist Florist: Can I help you? Nervous Teenager: Uh, yeah. I'm going to the prom tomorrow, and I need to get something for my date. Florist: Would you like a bouquet (花束) or a corsage (胸前花饰)? Nervous Teenager: What do people usually get? Florist: Our floral arrangements (插花)might be too elaborate for a prom date. I think you should try a wrist corsage. It can be pinned on a jacket or worn on the wrist. Nervous Teenager: What color should I get? Dan: If he's really sick, the smell of the flowers might bother him. How about a ballon bouquet? Mary: That's a good idea. We can get him a get-well card while we're at it. 祝愿康复卡 Dan: Since it's a gift shop, don't you think we should actually get a gift? Mary: They don't seem to have anything but teddy bears. I think that's a little to juvenile for Mr. Jones. Dan: I'm going to do it anyway. It's a good joke. Can you imagine Mr. Jones curled up in bed with a teddy bear? Mary: There go your brownie points (因某事而获得赏识)! 你真是聪明。 5 去购物中心 Going to the Shopping Mall Old Brother: You want me to take you to the mall again? You practically live there! Younger Sister: It's the whole mall experience. I like watching the mall walkers exercise in the morning, and the retired people drinking coffee at McDonald's in the food court. 美食广场 Old Brother: So the huge collection of clothing shops - not to mention the guys that hang out in the mall - have nothing to do with it? Wife: We'll save a lot of money shopping the sales. Husband: Look, if we just go to the warehouse club, we can save a lot of time. Buying bulk (批量购买)doesn't just save money... It also means we can stock up (备货、囤积)on the basics. We won't have to go shopping for months. Wife: It may seem like you are saving money, but bulk prices aren't always cheaper than sale prices at grocery stores. I've done the research. Husband: Let's do both today, and then we can really compare. Wife: Good idea! Husband: Wife: 8 在仓储商店购物(2) Warehouse Shopping (2) Husband: Whew! That was hard work, comparing prices. Wife: Did you notice that the warehouse only had brand name products (品牌产品)? The generic products (一般产品,非品牌产品) at the grocery store were so much cheaper. Husband: That's true, but there were some good deals at the warehouse. Wife: Only if you bought huge quantities. Now we've got to find a place to store all this. And I'm sure we'll eat more because we have so much on hand. I'll never keep my figure. 保持体形 Husband: OK, so there are some drawbacks. But we did save a lot of time. 缺点 Wife: I think the bottom line is that it's a good idea to shop the warehouse club once a month, but we shouldn't do all our shopping there.
