An electronic-book firm is adding background noises and music to the works of Charlotte Bronte, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and William Shakespeare in the hope of attracting younger readers. In one example, a description of rain lashing against a window in a Sherlock Holmes story will be “enhanced” with matching noises. The first multimedia e-books — with sounds to accompany novels — will be available this Friday in the UK. The Booktrack releases are available to iPad users, with other tablet computer versions to follow. The concept is already in use in the U.S., where the classics come with added sound effects. Readers for example can hear the china cups chinking in Mr. Darcy’s garden as they read Pride And Prejudice. A story by Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie will be released later in the year with a specially crafted orchestral score. Rushdie’s story In The South will be released with a soundtrack provided by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The Power Of Six by Pittacus Lore, a novel for young adults, is one of the first to be tested with a soundtrack which builds in suspense in keeping with the plot. It works by timing the speed of each reader and the software measures the “turning” of a page and moves the music or sounds along accordingly. It has been created by Booktrack which synchronizes (使同步) music to each novel. It is funded by Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal. Mr. Thiel said, “It’s always exciting to witness the creation of a new form of media. The technology promises to captivate readers in a different way.” However, they have been greeted with horror by traditionalists, who say the technology takes away the pleasure of having one’s imagination stimulated by a story. They also raise the prospect (预期) of having to ask an overly eager reader to turn their book down. David Nicholls, whose bestseller One Day was recently turned into a film starring Anne Hathaway, said, “This sounds like the opposite of reading. It would be a distraction.” 1、What’s the purpose of the electronic-book firm adding sound effects to masterpieces? A.To add some creative factors to the e-books. B.To arouse interest of the readers. C.To satisfy the readers’ great need. D.To promote the technology progress. 2、Where was the idea that sounds are added to accompany novels first put forward? A.Britain. B.Australia. C.New Zealand. D.America. 3、The following should be done to make a soundtrack work, EXCEPT ________. A.measuring how long each reader spends in reading B.increasing the volume of the music or sounds C.making out the reading speed D.changing the music or sounds with pages turned 4、What’s Mr. Thiel’ attitude to the future of the new form of media? A.Doubtful. B.Indifferent. C.Hopeful. D.Negative. 22.(8分) Hotshot jet pilots are no match for cliff swallows. The birds rocket over bridges and skim over lakes, rushing forward at accelerations that would knock an Air Force. By tracking these contests with high-speed cameras, a new study gives the first, in-depth peek into avian aerodynamics (鸟类空气力学) in the wild. “The findings may even provide insight into how to design better micro air vehicles-tiny drones. This technology will be brilliantly useful,” says biomechanics expert Jim Usherwood of the United Kingdom’s Royal Veterinary College in Hatfield. “High-resolution field studies like this have never been done before for birds.” For cliff swallows, the trouble starts when they return from wintering in South America to their summer homes in North America. After arrival, they seek out their old mud nests—usually located under concrete bridges and freeways-and start rebuilding their homes. But rather than hunt down a fresh supply of mud, some swallows prefer stealing supplies from their more hardworking neighbors. Others take things further and will even lay an egg or two in their neighbor’s nest before taking off. Battles in the air follow if the invaders are caught in the act, and a new study takes advantage of these fights to learn how birds perform high-speed maneuvers (演习). The team placed three cameras along a North Carolina lake crossed by a highway bridge that houses several cliff swallow nests and waited for the battles to commence. The team was surprised to learn that most of the time, chasers copied the move of fleeing invaders. Swallows also pull very hard turns to escape an enemy, with one extreme case reaching 7.8 gravity. Fighter pilots usually pass out at about 5 or 6 gravity, which is why these experiments have earned interest, and partial funding, from the Office of Naval Research. The Navy may use the findings to build better guidance systems for micro air vehicles. However, the swallows’ biomechanics are complex, and now the team is simply trying to collect a few tricks. 1、Why did the Usherwood carry out the studies? A.To guide a better design of air vehicles. B.To prove the swallows are better at flying. C.To experiment with its high-speed cameras. D.To track how the swallows skim over lakes. 2、What leads to the battles among the birds? A.Sharing food. B.Occupying others’ nests. C.Seizing mud for nesting. D.Competing for the use of bridges. 3、Which can best replace the underlined word “commence” in paragraph 3? A.continue B.accelerate C.end D.begin 4、What is the trick of the swallow to escape its enemy? A.Accelerating toward it. B.Copying what its enemy do. C.Making sharp turns during flight. D.Seeking for help from its fellows. 23.(8分)Cigarette butts (烟蒂) are everywhere - clogging up our streets, littering our beaches - and for decades they’ve been thought of as “unrecyclable”. But a New Jersey-based company, called TerraCycle, has taken on the challenge, and has come up with a way to recycle millions of cigarette butts and turn them into industrial plastic products. Its aim is to take items that people normally consider impossible to recycle, and then use science to figure out a way to do just that. Despite the increase in anti-smoking ads and messaging over the past 20 years, global sales of cigarettes increased by 4 percent, and a whole lot of those cigarette butts are ending up as trash, which can surely pollute the surrounding environment. So how do you go about turning all those poisonous ends into something useful? TerraCycle does this by first breaking them down into separate parts. They mix the remaining materials, such as the tobacco and the paper, with other kinds of rubbish, and use it on non-agricultural land, such as golf courses. The filters (过滤嘴) are a little harder. To recycle these, TerraCycle first makes them clean and cuts them into small pieces, and then combines them with other recycled materials, making them into liquid for industrial plastic products. They now have more than 3,000 cigarette recycling bins in nine countries around the world. They’re also expanding their recycling offerings to the rest of the 40 percent of household waste that currently can’t be recycled, such as chocolate packaging, pens, and mobile phones. The goal is to use the latest research to find a way to stop so much waste ending up in. landfill (垃圾填埋), and then get companies to fund the process. And so far, it’s working. “We haven’t found anything that we can’t recycle,” communications director of Terra Cycle, Albe Zakes, said. “But with the amount and variety of packaging and litter in the world, we are always looking for new waste streams to address.” 1、Which of the following is true according to the text? A.It is impossible for the filters to be recycled. B.Terra Cycle has achieved a lot in recycling what used to be considered “unrecyclable”. C.Anti-smoking ads and messaging have led to people’s quitting smoking. D.Mobile phones can’t be recycled by means of the latest research. 2、What can we learn about the approach to recycling cigarette butts? A.Unbelievable and costly. B.Excellent but hard to carry out. C.Useless in dealing with other household waste. D.Practical and environmentally friendly 3、The underlined word ‘“trash” in Paragraph 2 probably means . A.mineral B.fertilizer C.rubbish D.poison 4、In Albe Zakes’s opinion, . A.TerraCycle has successfully recycled everything. B.they still have a long way to go. C.it will be too difficult for them to find new ways. D.the public should be aware of the environmental pollution. 24.(8分) Starting from 1710,a public land, the New Hope area has a famous history.
