As is shown in the first picture, the total production of tobacco in the world dropped from 14.364billion lbs. in 1994 to 14.2billion lbs. in 1995. According to the figures given in picture two, cigarette smokers account for 20percent of the total population in the world, reaching 1.1 billion persons. From the third and the fourth pictures we can see that smoking causes a lot of losses. First, it is a tremendous waste of money. The total amount of money spent on cigarette smoking amounts to $200 billion every year. Second, about 3 million people on the globe die of smoking every year.
As far as the tendency of tobacco consumption is concerned, I think in some developed countries the consumption will more or less stabilize. In many developing nations, however, the number of cigarette smokers will be on the rise.
There are two good reasons for what I’ve mentioned above. On the one hand, a growing number of people in developed countries realize that smoking pollutes the air, that it does a lot of harm to one’s health, and that it may be responsible for lung cancer and many other disease. One the other hand, cigarette smoking, unfortunately, is seen as a sign of economic growth in many developing countries. It is clear that the future tobacco consumption will vary from country to country.

According to the cartoon, various kinds of promises are often seen not only in advertisements, but also in department stores and even in public services. It is certain that promises are a good thing. But, as is shown in the picture, some of them are found to be false and deceptive. The reason for it is that what many advertisements undertake to fulfill, in fact, amounts to nothing else except what they are duty—bound to do.
As far as I am concerned, all promises in ads should be honest, without any sophistry. But now many of them turn out to be false. They attempt to induce consumers to purchase their goods and services. It is clear that there are shop owners and company managers who, making use of promises, stop at nothing to set traps for consumers to fall into. The promises given by them are shown to be the obligations they ought to fulfill. That is to say, they don’t provide consumers with any extra services which would help consumers to relieve their possible problems after they buy the goods. As is known to all, the consumer is God. And the God can’t be fooled. He should be respected. In my opinion, all those who intend to deceive consumers will reap what they have sown. And I suggest that all consumers be on their guard against any false promise.

THE UPS AND DOWNS OF POPULATION GROWTH

As is shown by the two graphs, during the period of time from 1800 to 1900, with the rapid growth of the U.S. population the number of species no longer existing shot up, adding up to 70 in 1990. It is obvious that the population explosion resulted in the sharp decline in the wildlife of the country. What caused this phenomenon?
There are, I think, two possible reasons for the effect. In the first place, the ever—increasing population needs more land to grow crops and more space to live in. Therefore, there is less and less room in the U.S. for wildlife. Secondly, a host of newly－built factories constantly discharge harmful gases and liquids, which seriously pollute the environment. This disturbs, the ecological balance, contributing to the extinction of some rare wildlife.
In my opinion, two effective measures should be taken to relieve the problem. On the one hand, the birth rate in he U.S. must be put under control as the more population, the more serious the environmental pollution. On the other, the U.S. government is supposed to create as many nature reserves as possible where all the native species of wild animals can wander free and be protected from man.

The two pictures given inform us of the brief history of world commercial fishing. From the upper picture we learn that the year 1900 saw a quite encouraging scene of world fishing: there were a great variety of fishes, but a limited number of fishing--boats in the ocean. However, a worrying change took place in the period of time from l900 to1955. As is shown in the lower picture, with the sharp development of world commercial fishing, the ocean became crowded with different kinds of fishing--boats and hence there were few fishes in it. It is clear that a disastrous change occurred in the previous 95 years.
As far as the purposes of the drawer of the pictures are concerned, they are as follows. To begin with, he intends to warn us of the over-exploitation of marine resources, including fish, which will inevitably result in the extinction of many species of marine organisms. Secondly, he aims to draw our attention to the protection of marine resources in every possible way. Finally, the drawer wants, I think, to render the idea that the sea fish resources, which help to keep a large population from being hungry, will be completely ruined if the present situation of overfishing continues at an accelerated rate.
In my opinion, a series of counter--measures should be taken to reverse the current dangerous tendency. On the one hand, the governments throughout the world are supposed to set up as many marine nature reserves as possible to protect marine organisms. On the other hand, it is urgent that the world commercial fishing be put under control because overfishing is one of the factors which are responsible for the present situation. Only in this way can we protect marine resources from being destroyed some day.

As is generally believed, love is probably the noblest of all the worthy feelings of mankind. Without love there exists no association between human beings, no mutual sympathy and help, and ultimately, no responsibility to the society. Every one of us should show love to those who are in need and at the same time tends to hope to be loved. As the picture below depicts, the noble love is just a smiling lamp whose rays become brighter where it is darker. So the symbolic meaning of the cartoon is that help is most desired where one is in difficulties.
Let’s take the Project Hope for example. When a poor little girl in a remote rural area has to drop out of school on account of poverty, a small sincere contribution from the society will help her to get out of the difficulty and to continue with her schooling. Let’s have another example. The year 1998 saw a serious flood in Hubei Province. Many houses were swept away and many local inhabitants were killed or injured in it．At that time the people all over the country were united as one. A large number of contributions were raised and sent to the severely affected areas, which helped the victims to relieve their difficult situation. The two examples given above manifest that love is a lamp which is the brighter the darker a place is.
As far as my suggestion as to the best way to show love is concerned, whenever one gets in trouble, it is our duty to lend a helping hand to him. Love means help. We should never hesitate to show our love to anyone in distress. I believe that only if our society is full of love, tomorrow will be better and brighter.（288 words）

In recent years, the whole country has been excited by a new type of TV entertainment program: selecting popular stars from ordinary people. Among these programs, “Happy China Supergirl” is the most striking one, with an audience rating amounting to 49%. This figure shows that almost half of the TV audience has watched the program.
Several reasons contribute to the success of Supergirl. First of all, this program adopts a brand-new mechanism to select contestants. Unlike traditional singing competition where professional judges make the final decision, TV audience of Supergirl have been delegated to vote through telephone call or text messages to determine which contestants should be eliminated or stay. This step enables TV audience to have the decision power and a sense of participation, indicating a new democratic trend in popular entertainment. In addition, most of the participants of Supergirl are young and full of vitality, making the program relaxing and entertaining. And the extraordinary popularity of the final champions attracts more and more ladies to show themselves on TV and demonstrate their singing talents in the hope that they will be “New Stars” too.
Although I am not interested in participating this so-called “production of stars of common people”, I bear no prejudices against it like some people who criticize it as vulgar and a mere pursuit of high audience rating. From my point of view, popular entertainment should be diverse and multi-facets as long as it is under proper orientation.
