13、A famous violinist enters the stage to perform a solo at a New York City music hall. Getting on stage is no small task for him. A brain disease he got as a child forces him to walk with crutches（拐杖）.

14、Teenager Jake Denham was skiing with his family in the USA when he felt over and lost one of his skis. His family didn't know that he had a problem. They kept on skiing. When they got to the foot of mountain, there was no sign of Jake.
Jake couldn't find his ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn't work out the right way to go.

17、London used to be “foggy”（ 有雾的） for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The “fog” was in fact smog（烟雾）, a mixture of smoke and fog．In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal(煤)that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1920s, London’s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean the air. A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city.
