There is one located on our street and it has just been completely rebuilt. I told her that they helped people book their trips and vacations. “Why haven’t we ever been there?” she wanted to know. “ Because we do everything ourselves online these days” I explained.“But why do it yourself if other people want to do it for you?” she wondered out loud. The answer is that the travel agency makes a little bit of money on each ticket you book through them. If you book your ticket yourself online, you save that money. Saving money sounds great except that when you think about it you typically spend three evenings comparing prices to end up saving $30 on a $300 trip. All those $30 discounts add up of course so I guess we should be happy with that. Consider books for a moment. Buying your book at Amazon saves you maybe 30% to 40% on each book. Add to that the convenience of shopping from home and getting the package delivered to your home address. So far so good.Unfortunately, that does mean you spend too much time browsing Amazon. com while you could do something fun instead.Like maybe reading an actual book? Then the package arrives and you aren’t home and end up having to pick it up at the local postoffice. All in all I wonder how much time I end up investing in the whole process. Time sounds free, but to most of us, it is more valuable than money. The Internet Economy promised to get rid of the middlemen and we loved it. Somehow, I’m starting to get the feeling that we ourselves ended up doing the work of that middlemen we were so eager to get rid of. In any project you can always pick two of these: fast, cheap or good.We seem to have focused a lot on ‘cheap’ and ‘good’ but the extra time we need to invest to also keep it ‘fast’ comes out of our own pockets. You can always make more money but you can never make more time. 21.What is the purpose of paragraph 1 ? A.It mainly shows the curiosity of the author’s daughter. B.It indicates that the Internet has influenced our daily life. C.It tells us the importance of a travel agency. D.It shows why people need a travel agency. 22.What can be inferred from paragraph 2 ? A.We should be satisfied with $30 that we have saved because it is worthwhile. B.$30 that we have saved is too little, so we can’t be happy with it. C.We should feel regretful although $30 is worth the time we have spent. D.It’s hard for us to be happy with $30 because we have wasted a lot of time. 23.What’s the author’s attitude towards the Internet Economy? A.Positive B.Indifferent C.Neutral D.Critical 24.What’s the best title for the passage? A.The convenience of the Internet Economy. B.How to save time in the Internet Economy. C.The hidden cost of the Internet Economy. D.How to save money in the Internet Economy. B For years, planethunters have been searching for a planet other than Earth that can support life. They may have found one.In other words:Aliens,if you’re out there,we’re getting closer. The new planet is 20 light years away.We can’t travel at the speed of light—only light can go that fast—so even at the fastest speed we could manage,it would take a spaceship from Earth more than 200 years to go that far. But that doesn’t mean we can’t study it.Thanks to powerful new telescopes and new techniques for searching the skies, scientists can learn a lot about distant planets without ever leaving Earth. Astronomers have found 492 extrasolar planets to date.An extrasolar planet is a planet that goes around a star other than the sun. These other stars are far away;in fact,Gliese 581 is a relatively close star, compared with many of the other stars found to have planets.Astronomers may be able to find new planets, but finding one that may have life is another story. The planet is the sixth found orbiting the star called Gliese 581.Steven Vogt, one of the scientists involved, told reporters that this star with its family of planets is kind of a smaller version of our own solar system. Vogt is an astronomer at the University of California,Santa Cruz.He said he expected the new planet to have water. On Earth, when we find water,we find life,so scientists are looking for life on other planets look for water first. “It’s pretty hard to imagine that water wouldn’t be there,”he said. A planet that can support life has to be just the right size for its system and just the right distance from its star. Maybe the planet, called Gliese 581g,doesn’t sound very earthlike. After all,it’s very close and very big.But its star is a red dwarf(矮子),which means it’s much cooler than the sun.Because the star is much cooler, its closein planets don’t get as hot.Temperatures on Gliese 581g’s surface probably range between-24 degrees and 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Gliese 581g is an exciting discovery—and astronomers are likely to find more soon, thanks to new powerful telescopes specifically designed to look for planets. 25.People can’t travel to Gliese 581g mainly because of ________. A.its harsh environment B.its long distance from its star C.its low temperatures D.its long distance from us 26.We can conclude that Gliese 581 is orbited by________. A.more than six big planets B.six small and cold planets C.at least six planets D.no more than six planets 27.According to Vogt, life might exist on Gliese 581g if________. A.its size is similar to Earth’s B.it has a wide range of temperatures C.water can be found there D.it is close to its star 28.In which part of a newspaper would you most probably read this passage? A.Science. B.Life. C.Entertainment. D.History. C “Iris scan(虹膜扫描), please,” the bank’s computer voice tells you. You step up and the computer reads your eye, comparing it to the stored file it has of your iris. The images had better match—otherwise, you won’t be able to get your money. Iris scanning and other technologies, such as fingerprint and voice scanning, have appeared in many science fiction movies in the past. Today, these advanced technologies are part of the real world. They are common at work, the bank, the airport, and your local prison. The iris scan, fingerprint scan, and voice scan are all examples of biometrics(生物测定学), a fast developing area of automatic personal identification technology. Basically, biometrics uses various ways to verify a person’s identity, based on the individual’s unique characteristics, including fingerprints, signature, and so on. Biometrics identification systems have a number of advantages over password systems. The primary advantage is that an individual has to be physically present in order to be identified.Another important advantage is that there are no passwords to remember, forget, lose, or steal. The voice scan is the simplest and most affordable form of biometrics. It only requires a computer, a microphone, and the correct software. The software records a subject’s voice and then compares it to a stored voice sample for identification purpose. For additional safety, fingerprint and handprint scans can also be employed.Fingerprint scans take the image of a fingerprint and compare it to a stored file of prints. Handprint scans identify the unique features of a hand. 29.The first paragraph serves as a(n)________. A.example B.explanation C.comment D.conclusion 30.The underline word “verify” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”. A.protect B.confirm C.develop D.change 31.What is the author’s attitude towards the future of biometrics? A.He is uncertain about it. B.He feels doubtful about it. C.He is worried about it. D.He feels hopeful about it. 32.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A.To explain the importance of identification technology. B.To discuss the potential of biometrics systems. C.To introduce the technology of biometrics. D.To show the advantages of iris scanning. D Life in 2060 Let us suppose it is now about A.D.2060.Let’s make believe it is about fifty years from now.Of course, things have changed and life is very different. Voyages to the moon are being made every day.It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have been built. The hotels are airconditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picture window.Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment(娱乐)of the young and the old. What are people eating now?People are still eating food. They haven’t yet started to take on(继续)their supply of energy directly as electrical current or as nuclear power. They may some day.But many foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants. Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago, most of our planet’s surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water and crops are no longer destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good. Farming,of course,is very highly developed.Very few people have to work on the farm.It is possible to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then. People are now largely vegetarians(素食者).You see,as the number of people increases, the number of animals decreases. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in our bodies and in our minds, and we know the causes and cures for diseases and pains, and it is possible to get rid of diseases. No one has to be ill any more. Such would be our life in 2060. 33.According to the passage, what will be on the moon in about A.D.2060? A.Many tourists. B.Many other animals. C.Many plants. D.A sea. 34.What will people eat then according to the passage? A.Biscuits in pill form. B.Foods in pill form. C.Foods in water form. D.Foods in gas form. 35.Why are people largely vegetarians in 2060? A.Because they don’t eat meat. B.Because doctors advise them not to eat meat. C.Because the number of animals decreases. D.Because all the animals have died of diseases. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Nearly everyone has spent at least one night lying in bed wishing for sleep. But for many, it’s a nightly struggle. The key, or secret, is to experiment. What works for some might not work as well for others. It’s important to find the sleep strategies that work best for you. Set a regular bedtime. Go to bed at the same time every night.__36__Try not to break this routine on weekends when it may be tempting to stay up late. If you want to change your bedtime, help your body adjust by making the change in small daily increments, such as 15 minutes earlier or later each day. Wake up at the same time every day. If you’re getting enough sleep,__37__ If you need an alarm clock to wake up on time, you may need to set an earlier bedtime. As with your bedtime, try to maintain your regular waketime even on weekends. Be smart about napping. While taking a nap can be a great way to recharge, especially for older adults, it can make insomnia(失眠)worse. If insomnia is a problem for you, consider giving up napping. If you must nap,__38__ Fight afterdinner drowsiness(睡意). If you find yourself getting sleepy before your bedtime,__39__such as washing the dishes, calling a friend, or getting clothes ready for the next day.- 配套讲稿:
