A My son has poliomyelitis(小儿麻痹症) and he suffered from it a lot. When he was young, my wife and I took him to see to many doctors and got different kinds of treatments. But still, he couldn’t walk like a normal kid. So he was laughed at by his peer for his walking style. his tears burnt our eyes like sulphuric acid(硫酸). Then, he became afraid of going to school. He wouldn’t go any more. One night, my wife had a breakdown and shouted at him, “I tell you, my kid, you might be like this forever. You are a freak in other people’s eyes, and perhaps it would never change. But in my eyes, in your dad’s eyes, you are not a freak! You are not! Even if you are, we love you and we will love you forever! ” My son spoke nothing for two days. He didn’t eat or sleep. We could read has hurt. We hoped something wonderful would fall in our family. On the third morning, he struggled to walk to my car, with his school bag in his hand of course. He raised his head high and hugged me, saying “I want to go to school. Nothing will beat me.” You know, from then on, he was never afraid of being mocked or despised anymore. If he couldn’t avoid these looks, he chose to look at them in the eyes. Later, something nice really happened and my son went to MIT. When he was asked how he managed to bear the pressure, he said, “Because of my parents.” My dear fellows, if you care too much about how other people look at you or what their opinions are, you will never become what you want to be. 1. These days, both women and men are surrounded by magazines and websites full of tips about dieting, exercise and fashion. Not to mention hairstyles! Gone are the days when all men had to think about was wearing a nice suit to be smart and handsome. Things have changed. Now, a survey by the University of the West of England (UWE) has suggested that 80% of men confess to being unhappy about their body. The biggest body issues for them were beer bellies and lack of muscles. Some think sudden vanity is due to the pressure or influence of role models we see on TV and in magazines. People end up with a perception of what the perfect body should look like. But not everybody wants to put in the effort to have perfect pecs(胸肌) and dazzling white teeth like Arnold Schwarzenegger. An opportunistic entrepreneur has even invented a musicale-enhancing shirt to be worn under a man’s clothes to make him look more of a hunk. But Joe Warner, the former editor of Men’s Fitness magazine in the UK, thinks the padded shirt is just a gimmick. He thinks many people in the country ate obese, or overweight, and should accept they need to do more exercise. Warner says, “ I think it’s a real shame that people still want short cuts when it doesn’t take an awful lot of effort to set to the gym or go for a walk.’’ Exercise is always a good thing. But we mustn’t forget that beauty is only skin deep. Character is more important than appearance. So before I head off to the pub, it might be worth spending an hour at the gym. I’m not looking to get a six-pack(块块隆起的腹肌),but looking healthier would certainly improve my confidence and self-esteem. What about you: how much do you worry about your physique? 5. In the UK, it’s common to fly the nest (另立门户) at a fairly young age. Many choose a flat-share; others make plans to get on the property ladder. But the current economic situation forced Luke back to his mum’s house at the age of 27. And he’s not alone: a quarter of young adults in the UK now live with their parents. The Office for National Statistics said more then 3.3 million adults between the ages of 20 and 34 were living with their parents in 2013. Lack of jobs and the high cost of renting accommodation made Luke change his plans. He’s frustrated. “ There’s something very difficult about being an adult living in an environment where you’re still a child , “ he says.” It limits me socially; sometimes I feel it limits me professionally.” Indeed, many young people have no choice bet to stay at “the hotel of Mum and Dad”. Krissy had to return home after a year away and now lives in rather cramped conditions, sharing the family’s three-bedroom house with her siblings. She says they end up getting on each other’s nerves when it’s time to use the bathroom in the morning. Of course, residing with your parents is not unusual in some countries. Economic conditions, culture, or family traditions mean many young people stay at home until they get hitched. Even then, it can be too expensive to rent or buy a house and the married couples continue to live at one of their parents ’homes. But some parents seem to enjoy having their kids back at home. Janice’s daughters are part of what’s being called “the boomerang generation” . She says “I get to share their lives with them , and I’ve got to know them all as adults. We have the sort of conversations pat good friend do.” So for some it’s a win-win situation-spending time with your families, and saving money. 9. How is the passage developed? A. By listing figures. Janice belongs to a group called “the boomerang generation” 11. What does the underlined sentence mean in the fifth paragraph? A. They get on very well with each other. B. I’ve been trying to get him 21 (hire) at the company I work at. He is one of the 22 (bright) people I know and he’d be a great fit at out company. A woman who has been here for 30 years knew his working experience and thought so, too. I’m not in the position to hire him, but she is and knows other colleagues 23 are, too. So far, things look positive. While that could be my kindness story today, it’s really not. In talking with my friend 24 the meeting that he had , he said of the woman ——“ I really like her because she cares. She cares about the company and she cares about the quality of her work.” I agreed with him wholeheartedly 25 this really does sum up this individual. I sent 26 email at work to her today, not only thanking her for taking the time to speak to my friend, 27 sharing with her his comment and my agreement. It made 28 happy —— she said it brought tears to her eyes. I’m reminded that simply passing along kind words that 29 (share) with others is sometimes a great gift of kindness with the 30 (deep) of love that we simply can’t guess. I like traveling and my dream of paying a visit for out capital city Beijing came true during the National Day holiday this year. I went to Tian’anmen Square with my parents on October 1 , which we watched a flag-raising ceremony. While I watched the flay rising slow , I sang the national anthem to music , feeling extremely exciting. Then we go to some other famous tourist attraction, like the Great Wall.
