He was astonished to discover that it was a mouse trap! Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse declared the warning, “There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house.” The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr Mouse, I can tell you this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me, I cannot be bothered by it.” The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mouse trap in the house.” “I am so sorry, Mr Mouse,” sympathized the pig, “but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; be assured that you are in my prayers.” The mouse turned to the cow, who replied, “A mouse trap, am I in grave danger, huh?” So the mouse returned to the house, head down and depressed to face the farmer’s mouse trap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was an evil snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knew to treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. His wife’s sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral. The farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat. So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember that when the least of us is threatened, we are all at risk. 46. We could see from the passage that the mouse was ______. A. kind and warm-hearted B. well-informed C. good at cheating others D. foolish and rude 47. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. The pig was comparatively less friendly than the others in the farmyard. B. The underlined word “ingredient” (Paragraph 7) refers to ______. A. the mouse B. the pig C. the snake D. the chicken B According to a new survey, more than half of the parents in the United States are helping, or have helped or supported their adult children who have been hit by high unemployment and poor wages. It showed that present economic conditions are discouraging young adults from leaving home and forcing those who have already gone, so called boomerang(回旋镖) kids, to return. “Parents are continuing their financial involvement longer than we expected, ” said Ted Beck, president of National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE). About 60 percent of parents questioned in the survey said they are helping their adult children who are no longer in school financially. Half are providing housing and nearly half are helping with living expenses. For an increasing number of adult children, the situation is bad. Two-thirds of adult children, aged 18 to 39, who are not in school said they faced tougher financial pressure than previous generations, according to the survey. And nearly one-third of the parents agreed that it was easier for them to find their financial feet than for their children. Parents are helping their children out of genuine(真诚的) concern because they don't want to see them struggle. But Beck said that parents who make sacrifices to help their adult children should be careful about their own finances. “If you are taking on extra debt or delaying retirement to help your adult children, you could be making a mistake and putting your own financial future in danger,” Beck warned. Boomerang children can also cause other problems for their parents. Thirty percent of parents said they have given up privacy since their adult children moved back home, while more than a quarter have taken on added debt, and seven percent have delayed retirement. But the survey also showed that 42 percent of adult children living at home are helping with the cooking and cleaning. 49. According to the passage, boomerang kids here refer to ________. A. married adult children B. grown-ups living with parents C. adult children independent and successful in life D. adult children depending on parents for financial support 50. Which of the following matches the result of the survey? A. About 30% of parents offer their adult children housing. B. One-third of adult children earn money more easily than their parents. C. Two-thirds of adult children are faced with financial problems in school. D. About 50% of parents give money to their adult children to cover the daily cost. 51. What is Ted Beck's suggestion to the parents? A. Asking their children to help with the housework. B. Being cautious in helping their children. C. Leaving their children to struggle to live. D. Putting off their time of retirement. 52. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Adult children are less independent B. Parents help support adult children C. Bad conditions affect children a lot D. Spoiled generation in the United States C It is almost like a reflex(条件反射) whenever we have a runny nose or a cough we reach for the antibiotics(抗生素). But maybe you should think twice before you start taking those pills next time you have a bit of a cold. Many doctors warn that we are overusing and sometimes misusing antibiotics to treat common diseases. This could have bad results. Across the world, the problem of antibiotic resistance is growing, and the situation is especially bad in China. The average amount of antibiotics each Chinese person takes every year is almost three times the international level and ten times the level in the United States, Xiao Yonghong, a professor in Peking University, told the Guangming Daily on October 19. It is a common wrong idea that antibiotics work for all diseases right down to everyday coughs and colds. In fact, antibiotics only work against bacteria, and not viruses. Most forms of the common cold and flu are caused by viruses, so antibiotics are useless against them. The process of curing a disease is like a war. Antibiotics kill many kinds of bacteria which make you sick, but sometimes they also get “confused” and kill antibodies(抗体) in your body that should be helping to kill viruses. Sometimes the enemy bacteria may change themselves in order to fight back. When antibiotics are used wrongly or too often, the bacteria can develop faster. This worsens the infection and makes it harder to treat. Because of resistance to antibiotics, once treatable diseases are becoming fatal(致命的) again. In recent years, different kinds of “superbugs” have been showing themselves in man- 配套讲稿:
