The autistic (自闭症的) five-year-old girl tried to speak, and she was often thrown into panic(痛楚) by the world around her. She filled her days with painting, and nothing could quite change this situation. Until, that was, a cat called Thula came along. The pair are now inseparable(形影不离的). Iris’ parents believe the gentle cat is helping their little girl communicate with others, as well as influencing her works of art. In the beginning, they thought it was just coincidence, but now they believe Iris is expressing her love for Thula through her painting. Mother said, “When Iris is painting, Thula is told by her to “sit down” if she jumps up onto the table. She stays there, watching Iris with great interest, sometimes wanting to play with the brushes, but mostly just patiently watching.” And the pair’s bond(联系) doesn’t end there. Thula is at Iris’ side for every part of her life. The pair’s closeness is having an effect on Iris’ relationships with others, and her parents find it easier to encourage her to talk to others. After researching the advantages of animal therapy(疗法) for autistic children, the couple had tried introducing Iris to horses, dogs and even other cats with no success --- but things changed when Thula came to live with the family. During weeks, the cat was helping to comfort the little girl in times of stress. Mother said, “It was as if they were old friends from the day they met. Thanks to Thula, new doorways to communication and feelings are opening and Iris is happier than ever before.” 26. According to the passage, Thula _______. A. likes playing with children B. helps Iris paint better C. helps Iris get better over her autism D. teaches Iris how to look after an animal 27. What does the underlined word “coincidence” refer to? A. The fact that something impossible happens. B. The fact that something will certainly happen. C. The fact that someone has achieved something he wants. D. The fact that two wonderful things happened at the same time. 28. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. The cat always plays with the brushes. B. Thula is the first cat that has been introduced to Iris. C. Iris and Thula become good friends during weeks. D. Iris now has good relationships with other children. C In the heart of the woods there lay a cool, green pool. There also lived a group of frogs. On every warm night, the voices of the frogs cheerfully arose(出现). Some voices were low and deep --- these were from the oldest and wisest of the frogs. Some were high and shrill --- these were from those who didn’t like to remember the days when they had tails and no legs. “Kerrump! I’m chief of this pool!” croaked(呱呱叫) a frog. “Kerrump! I’m chief of this pool!” replied another frog. A hungry crane was standing nearby, hidden by the grass. Hearing the voice of the first frog, he quietly walked towards him. The frog gave a frightened croak, and kicked hard to get away. The crane almost had him when something wound(缠绕) one of his legs. He drew back for a second, and the frog got away! But the crane did not lose his dinner; a water snake circled around his leg, and that made a meal. Now he rested and listened. The first frog was silent, but the second frog croaked: “Kerrump! I’m chief of this pool!” The crane got hungry again and went round the pool, trying to catch the second frog. Just as he came closer to the frog, the crane saw something that made him fly away. A mink(水貂) had crept(爬行) very close to him, hoping to catch him for his meal! So the second frog got away, too; but he was so frightened that he never spoke again. After a long time, the crane got over his fear and became hungry once more. The frogs were singing again, and above them all, there appeared the voice of a third frog: “Kerrump! I’m chief of this pool!” The crane decided to silence him once and for all. The frog croaked and tried to get away. But just then, a fox crept up behind the crane. The crane was caught and carried off screaming into the woods. So the third frog was able to got away, but he never dared(敢) to open his mouth again. 29. According to the passage, the crane _______. A. ate nothing that night B. got hurt three times C. let all the three frogs get away D. didn’t dare to catch the frogs at last 30. What can we infer(推断) from the passage? A. It is dangerous living in the wood. B. A wise person always keeps silent. C. Be careful when you are close to your goal. D. Never be proud, even if you have done well. 31. Where can we probably find this passage? A. In a children’s book. B. In an introduction to animals. C. In a book about dangers in the woods. D. In a book full of information about pools. D Wouldn’t it be great if you could walk into a store and buy life-long happiness? The idea is not as unbelievable as it sounds --- as long as(只要) whatever you buy is meant for someone else. A recent study says that giving to others makes us happy, even happier than spending on ourselves. What’s more, our kindness might create a good cycle that leads to lasting happiness and selflessness(无私). In this study, researchers in Great Britain asked volunteers to take a survey measuring(测量) life satisfaction. They divided all 86 volunteers into three groups. The first group was required to act a daily kindness for the next 10 days. The second group was also told to do something new each day over the 10 days. The third group received no requirements. 10 days later, researchers asked the volunteers to complete the life satisfaction survey again. The groups that practiced the kind or the new both experienced a big and nearly equal improvement in happiness; but the third group didn’t get any happier. The findings tell us that good acts exactly in fact make people feel good --- even when carried out just over a short period of 10 days. There may be special advantages to varying(使多样化) our acts of kindness, since trying new things seems to have something to do with happiness as well. The researchers found that people generally felt happier when they were asked to remember a time they had bought something for someone else; even happier than when they remembered buying something for themselves. This happiness improvement was the same, regardless of whether the gift has cost a lot of money or only a little. The practical meaning of this survey result could be that doing one kind act would make you happier, and the happier you feel, the more likely you are to do another kind act. This might also be used by charitable(慈善的) organizations: reminding honors of earlier donations could make them happy, and experiencing happiness might lead them to make more generous gifts. 32. Which of the following should make people happiest, according to the passage? A. Buying something for themselves. B. Buying something for others. C. Thinking of happy times from the past. D. Trying new things once a month. 33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the research? A. The third group became happier than the other two groups. B. The first group became happier than the second group. C. Doing either kind things or new things makes people happy. D. The third group was told to do something new. 34. The underlined words “regardless of “ mean ___________. A. 就…而言 B. 通过…方式 C. 不管,不顾 D. 与…相反 35. What is the general topic of the passage? A. Advice on how to be happy. B. The importance of being generous. C. Donating things makes people happy. D. Being kind makes you happy. 第Ⅱ卷(非选择题 共42分) 四、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) 阅读下面短文,在表格内的空白处填入合适的答案(每格限填一词)。 My talk this morning is about five important things to remember when you leave this college. They are often overlooked(忽略), but they have been very helpful for me. First, pick a company that is dedicated(一心一意的) to helping people. Then your life will be devoted to a job full of meaning. In 1949 I started a company called Medtronic with two people to repair electronic medical equipment, but now our company has over 31,000 workers in 120 countries around the world. In our first month we made eight dollars, but this year the electronic devices that Medtronic has developed will make nearly nine million dollars. Second, do more work than is required. Find ways to go beyond the details of your task. And work further on it. The more, the better. You need strong passion and enthusiasm(热爱) for your work. Third, “Ready, Aim, Fire!” This is the way I have practiced all my life. There are always decisions to be made. In my experience, it is better not to get- 配套讲稿:
