Twenty years ago I was treated with some medicine that damaged my kidneys(肾). It was necessary for me to have dialysis(透析). After a couple of years my husband and I were trained to do the dialysis and were able to do it every other night at home.
I was put on a waiting list for a kidney transplant. A few years later I received a kidney from a young girl who had died in a traffic accident. I was given a new kidney but my body started to fight against it before I left the hospital. I went back on dialysis. The next year my daughter gave me a kidney. I kept her generous gift for six years but had to stop taking the anti-rejection (抗排斥) drugs when I developed lymphoma(淋巴瘤), which was caused by the drugs. Because I had to stop the drugs I lost the kidney again. So I continued with the dialysis.
I went back to university and got a degree in computer science. I was hired by the government of San Diego. That was 13 years ago, and I was still on dialysis at home. I refuse to let this kidney failure hold me back. By taking responsibility for my own health, and with the true help of my husband and family, I have been able to make a good life for my family and avoid taking disability payments. I have been promoted several times and now I am a main official at my workplace. I also try my best to make people forget my bad health. I have been "cancer-free" for 6 years. I now have 3 grown-up children, 4 grandchildren and 5 rescued dogs. I am enjoying life to the fullest.

People aged 20 may show greater facility （设施；设备） for mathematics, but this is due almost entirely to the fact that 20-year-olds use math all the time, while 60-year-olds don’t.
As you grow older, or if you have already reached or passed middle age, don’t fool yourself with the idea that the ability to learn diminishes with age. It just isn’t true! You can learn and grow intellectually (智力地) as long as you want to progress and you can continue to do so as long as you are alive. That is one of the truly exciting facts of life.

"First aid should be a compulsory(必修的) part of study," St. John Ambulance has urged ministers.
The charity carried out a survey of more than 1,500 school children, of whom seven out of ten said they would not know how to help in an emergency.
First aid is a compulsory subject for Welsh and Northern Irish pupils, but in English and Scottish schools it is an optional (可选择的) part of the curriculum. The government said that it intended to bring England into line by 2011.
An estimated 400,000 young people are injured each year at school, according to the first aid charity. Its survey suggested that almost the same proportion (比例) of primary and secondary school children who said they would not know how to help someone in need of first aid would like to learn.
The British Red Cross also argues that all schools should teach first aid, because the UK falls behind the rest of Europe when it comes to life-saving skills. According to the charity, some 80% of people in Scandinavian countries and Germany have first aid skills, compared with 7% in the UK.
The British Red Cross also estimates that of the 5.5 million people who visit Emergency Departments for Accidents each year, about 3 million suffer from injuries that would benefit from some form of first aid treatment.
Elaine Howlings, who co-ordinates school training for St. John Ambulance, said the "overwhelming (压倒性的；势不可挡的) message" from the survey was that the children surveyed were scared by the fact that they would not know what to do in an emergency.
She said: "They wanted to be able to help — helping their friends when they fell off walls or helping people that had been involved in car accidents."
