A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self­made man—the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts，usually beginning by working with his hands. Some say college is wasted on the young. So many of us look back on our own college years and realize what we could have done differently to make the most of them. While we can’t go back, we certainly can offer our sons and daughters our best advice to help them make the right choices in college. Hopefully, they will have fewer regrets than we do. The following are five guidelines parents can share with their college-bound kids to put the whole experience in perspective.
EDUCATION IS YOUR FIRST PRIORITY
As soon as you arrive on campus, there will be competing interests. Feel free to check them out but always remember that you are there first and foremost for your education. Go to class prepared and on time. Be engaged during class. Make sure your professor knows you and realizes that you care.
BE RESPONSIBLE
There are many layers of responsibility. Do what you say you will do and, if you can’t, own up to it early and communicate clearly. But being responsible isn’t just about meeting your commitments; it is also about taking care of you, your body, and your friends. For example, more than 1, 800 college students die annually from alcohol-related injuries. Look out for yourself and other people. Make moderate, sensible decisions so you aren’t suffering from the consequences later.
TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY
Incredible opportunities will present themselves: studying abroad, interning at a unique place, trying new things. Don’t let fear prevent you from taking advantage of them. There may never be so much time or as many resources devoted to your betterment again in your life. Say yes to opportunities that will help you grow.
FIND AND BE A MENTOR(顾问)
Some of the best lessons available to us can come outside of the classroom in the form of a mentor. One of the most powerful growth opportunities is being a mentor. Early on, find someone on campus who you feel can help you grow and develop a relationship with him or her. Also find someone for you to mentor. You will reinforce and enrich your own learning experience by teaching someone else.
GET THE JOB DONE
It is natural to occasionally feel you want to quit, when it makes more sense to you to go and find a full-time job. Resist that urge. Cast your mind back to the past twenty years and hardly did anyone have their own email account. The Internet just took off in 1991 and people were only using office and PC­based email exchanges.
In the mid 1990s external email providers emerged. The most famous of these was Hotmail，the first free email provider and web­based email service. Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith launched Hotmail on July 4,1996. And Microsoft took note of and bought Hotmail for $400 million on December 30,1997，a nice birthday present for Bhatia who turned 29 that day. It was relaunched as MSN Hotmail and in 2007 was relaunched again as Windows Live Hotmail.
Fast forward the present day and most of us have at least a personal web­based email account. It seems impossible to live without them. One of the biggest advantages of email is the fact that communication has become so much easier，especially with those across different time zones. Email takes seconds to send a message whereas letters，as we used to communicate by，could take weeks. Of course there was the fax，that beeping invention from the 1980s，but it wasn't as secure as email and you never knew if the person on the other end had picked up your fax or if it had got lost somewhere in the office.
In conclusion，one of the best inventions from the 1990s has to be email. But sometimes people are too closely connected to their email and have a compulsion to check it several times a day. At work，people have become lazy and instead of going to speak to the person sitting next to them，they send an email，causing an inbox to pile up with more time spent reading email and responding rather than working. Clearly，an invention that saved time because of its quick and speedy connection can now also cause us to waste a lot of time.

Just 25 years ago，the top three career hopes for young people in Britain were teacher，banker and doctor. Now，they want to be sports star，pop star and actor，according to a survey by the Guardian newspaper.
Rachel，a character in the popular TV show Glee，may be said to speak for British teenagers. “Nowadays being nobody is worse than being poor.” he said.
Emma Brockes，a reporter with the Guardian，believes it is “the bad influence of celebrity (名人) culture” that is to blame. “When children wanted to be doctor，it wasn't because they were really more interested in the functions of human organs than they are now；you go where the respect is.” she wrote.
It could explain why there has been such an increase in levels of anxiety and depression. Dr Carlo Strenger，of Tel Aviv University，studied the sense of self for his new book The Fear of Insignificance：Searching for Meaning in the 21st Century. “As humans，we naturally measure ourselves to those around us，but now we live in a global village. Today, even high achievers constantly fear that they are insignificant when they compare themselves to success stories in the media.
The way out？Simply stop measuring your achievement through a fantasy of wealth and celebrity. Dr Strenger said that it is a process called “active self­acceptance through a constant search for self­knowledge through life”．
