What is the most amazing thing in summer? A seaside vacation? Some good family time? Or a song that changes your whole life? These all happened to Ronnie, the main character of the book The Last Song (2009). It was written by United States author Nicholas Sparks.
Since Ronnie’s parents divorced (离婚) when she was 14, she had been staying with her mom in
New York. Her father, who used to be her piano teacher, lived alone in North Carolina. She was so mad at her dad that she had not talked with him or played the piano ever since the divorce. However, the summer before she turned 18, her mom sent her to North Carolina. At first, Ronnie was frustrated
about it. But things changed when her dad found some turtle eggs. Raccoons (浣熊) were trying to
break them. She learned more about the turtles at the local aquarium and set up a cage to protect the eggs.
The turtle nest broke down the tough (坚固的) wall between Ronnie and her father. However, it
was on the day the eggs hatched (孵化) that Ronnie found out her dad was dying of cancer. That was why her mom asked her to visit him. Ronnie was very upset. She started playing the piano again and

wrote a song for him before he died.
Ronnie deeply impressed me. Though she looks rebellious (叛逆的) in the book, she is tender (温 柔的). She even slept outside the whole night just to protect the turtle eggs from the raccoons. She loves her father.
It is a meaningful story. It teaches us about relationships with our parents and how to express love to our parents.

Many scientists will agree. This year the Nobel Prize gave the biggest prizes to findings on the smallest of scales.
Self-eating cells
This year’s winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine is from Japan. According to his research, cells (细胞) sometimes ―eat‖ themselves to keep healthy. In other words, cells can break down old ones and
use the useful parts to make new cells, or to fight off viruses (病毒). This new finding could help scientists fight many diseases.
Small machines
Three scientists from France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands (荷兰) won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on small machines. How small? Well, they are a thousand times thinner than a strand (缕) of hair. We can’t see them with only our eyes!
This technology will open a whole new world for us. For example, we could make very small robots in the future. A doctor could put them into our body. Like policemen, the robots look for the ill parts in our body, and send the medicine right there.
Super-state
As teachers said in your physics class, most things in the world are in three states: solids (固体), liquids (液体) and gases (气体). But at very low or high temperatures, things can turn into a strange state.
For example, break down things to their smallest pieces and we get ―atoms‖(原子). Like Lego
building blocks, atoms usually add up to become a 3-D thing, like a box. But atoms in the strange state don’t. They stay together and become a flat thing, like a piece of paper.
This is a new finding of three British-born scientists. And they won the Nobel Prize in Physics this

year. They hope to use things in this strange state to make new materials.

FRIDAY night is a good time to have fun as the week comes to an end. But Tri-City United School in Minnesota, US, took this to a new level. The school turned Friday into Art Night.
Art Night ran from 5 to 10 pm every Friday. It allowed students to get creative with paint, clay (陶
土) and temporary tattoos (暂时性纹身). The members of the high school ARTeam came up with the idea.
Thirty-six students registered (报名) for this activity. They were divided into three groups for
75-minute sessions (授课时间) of painting, pottery (陶器) making and henna (指甲花) design, with a pizza break in between. At the end of the night, students could take their work home.
Out of the three sessions, henna was the most popular. It’s the art of making beautiful tattoo patterns and has been practiced for more than 5,000 years in Southeast Asia. And it has recently become more popular in the US.
The art teacher Aimee Fisher traveled to India last year and learned henna. Then, she taught students how to do it at Art Night. ―I’m really excited to do henna,‖ student Sarah Colwell told Le Center Leader, a local newspaper. ―I’ve got it done on me, but I have never done it by myself.‖
In fact, this is just the beginning of their art journey. From March 3 to April 9, they will have their annual (每年的) student Art Show display at the Arts and Heritage Center in Montgomery. Students are in charge of the show by themselves.
