My first encounter(遭遇) with the myth that twins come package as a pair came more than 20 years ago in my local supermarket. As I pushed my shopping trolley with my ten-month-old twin daughters towards a woman, she said, “Which one is the good one and which one is the bad one?” I was speechless and hurried past.
Since twins are born a “matched set”, they are often seen as symbols of the good and bad in
all of us. Ancient myths and modern movies are full of situations where twins are made to represent
polar opposites.
Unfortunately, most people are more familiar with twin myths than with living, breathing twins. As one mother of adult twin sons puts it, “I was amazed at how good both my twins were. From an early age there was so much care between them. If I offered one a biscuit, he wouldn’t take it until he made sure that his brother was going to get one too. I tried, but I could never get my single-born kids to be as thoughtful about each other.” She says she protected her boys from twin myths while they were growing up by giving them distinctly different names. She never dressed them alike and avoided emphasis on their twinship.
Parents have the job of ensuring that their twins have a chance to develop their individual potentials. To do that, parents need to get rid of any myths in the back of their minds, and to resist any impulse(冲动) to favour one over the other. The key is to encourage each child to develop their strength, whether or not they are the same as the other twin’s.
While few parents believe the myth of good twin/bad twin, some fall into the trap of comparing their twins’ personalities and abilities. Of course, there are times when any parent becomes disappointed with one over the other. Wise parents keep these feelings to themselves. When they speak of differences between their twin children, they translate them into positive points, and avoid negative labels.

Cursive(草写体的)handwriting may soon go the way of the card catalog and the film projector. Schools are moving to the new curriculum standards that put more emphasis on typing skills. But not everyone is ready for the cursive alphabet to become a relic. The Idaho legislature(立法机关) is considering a statewide cursive order.
As far as the state representative Linder Bateman is concerned, losing cursive would amount to the dumbing down of society. That is why the Republican from Idaho Falls has introduced a bill to require cursive in elementary schools.
“If we don’t teach cursive handwriting, the day will come when people won’t able to read cursive handwriting.” Bateman says. “That means: Old diaries, old journals, old letters… the Declaration of Independence in its original.”
Idaho is one of 45 states, including Oregon and Washington, that have adopted a new set of national math and language standards called the Common Core. They establish expectations for each grade level. Keyboarding starts in third grade. Cursive handwriting is not included.
That slight has heated up a debate about the value of cursive, says Rich Christen, an educational historian at the University of Portland. Christen says, old documents aside, there aren’t a lot of practical reasons any more for teaching cursive.
“ But I think the aesthetic(美学的) argument can still be made,” he says. “I think that it’s an important way for students to be involved in an aesthetic activity every day. And that would be a way for cursive handwriting to survive.”

“For a long time, whales have been considered too rare to make much of a difference in the oceans,” notes University of Vermont biologist Joe Roman. In a new paper, Roman and a team of biologists have discovered that whales have a powerful and a positive influence on the function of oceans, global carbon storage, and the health of commercial fisheries. The decline in great whale numbers, at least 66% and perhaps as high as 90%, has likely changed the structure and function of the oceans, but recovery is possible and in many cases is already underway.
Baleen and sperm whales, known collectively as the “great whales,” include the largest animals to have ever lived on Earth. They eat plenty of fish, they are food for other predators like killer whales, and they distribute nutrients through the water. Even their dead bodies, dropping to the seafloor, provide habitat for many species that only exist on these “whale falls.” However, commercial whaling reduced the abundance of great whales.
“As humpbacks, gray whales, sperm whales and other whales recover from centuries of overhunting, we are beginning to see that they play an important role in the ocean,” Roman said.” Among their many ecological roles, whales recycle nutrients and improve primary productivity in areas where they feed.” They do this by feeding at depth and releasing feces(排泄物) near the surface—which supports plankton(浮游生物)growth—an amazing process described as a “whale pump.” Whales also move nutrients thousand of miles from productive feeding areas at high latitudes to the areas where they give birth at lower latitudes.
Sometimes, commercial fishermen have seen whales as competition. But this new paper summarizes a strong body of evidence that indicates the opposite can be true: whale recovery could lead to higher rates of productivity in locations where whales get together to feed and give birth. In death, the dead bodies of whales store a large amount of carbon in the deep sea and provide habitat and food for an amazing variety of creatures. “Dozens, possibly hundreds, of species depend on these whale falls in the deep sea,” Roman notes.
