阅读理解A2 1、During the meal, you'd better be careful not to leave a spoon in a soup bowl or coffee cup or any other dish. The coffee spoon ought to be on the saucer, the soup spoon ought to be on the plate under the bowl. When you are having soup, make the least noises and use the side of your spoon inside out this way, not the tip. And you mustn't pick up your soup bowls so as to drink away the last drops of your soup from the bottom of the bowl. Very often there is only one main course and salad, followed by your sweet. If you find the meal not enough, say "Oh, it's delicious!" and ask for some more of the chicken or steak or whatever you have just had. The hostess will be very glad that you appreciate her cooking and will give you an extra portion. But if you observe the Chinese way of being polite and say "No, thank you" when the hostess offers you more, you will most probably starve later, because Americans will never press food on you. Yet it is not polite to keep silent and not to talk with the person next to you. It would be considered good manners if you handle your silverware with care so that they don't make any noise. When coffee comes, drink it from your cup. The coffee spoon should rest on the saucer while you are drinking. And smoking, of course, is rarely seen at a dinner table. Well, when the meal is finished, the guests put their napkins on the table and stand up, the men again helping the ladies with their chairs. After the dinner, the guests usually stay for an hour or two, then they would say, "Well, I'm afraid I must be going now." The host and hostess would of course urge everyone to stay longer. "What, already? Won't you have another coffee?" The guests, for instance, would say, "I'd love to, but I have to be up early tomorrow morning. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening. Good-night." And if you stay overnight or over the weekend, it will be courteous to send a thank-you note to the host or hostess the following day, very often with a small gift such as a box of chocolate or some flowers as a token of appreciation of their hospitality. He had seen many newlyweds coming into his store to shop for their first refrigerator, washer and dryer, and air-conditioner. Pen and pencil in hand, they would ask him a lot of questions about price, features and after-sale services, but they would usually walk away at the end of their inquiry. The other day a young couple came into his store. They asked him all the usual questions and he answered all of them patiently. But when he suggested an order at the end, they replied firmly, "We'll have to look around places first." Although feeling a bit disappointed, Mr. Stevenson did not show it. Instead, he smiled, moved closer and said, "I know you will go to Discount Dan to look at the price tags. That's perfectly understandable. I do the same. In fact, they sell the same stuff as we do. But if you buy things there, there is something you will not get. And that is me. I come with everything I sell. I've been in the business for thirty years and in a few years' time I'm going to give my store to my daughter and son-in-law. I hope they will carry on the family business. I stand behind everything I sell and I will make sure that you will never regret buying things from me." After this short speech Mr. Stevenson offered the young couple some ice cream to thank for their interest. Impressed by his honesty and sincerity, the young couple decided to place an order. I cannot tell you what the optimum is. It differs with the type of work, it differs from person to person, and even in the same person it varies from week to week. You must try to find your own. Every day you study, bear this principle of the optimum in mind. When you feel yourself getting fatigued, if you find yourself repeatedly reading over the same paragraph and not taking it in, that's a pretty good sign you've reached the crest(最高点) for the day and should stop. Most ordinary students find their optimum at about five hours a day. Yours may be a little more or a little less - but if you get in five hours' good work a day, you will be doing well. Now, what are you doing with yourself when you aren't working? Before examinations some students do nothing at all except sit in a chair and worry. This is a misunderstanding. People too easily think of the mind as if it worked like the body; it does not. If one wanted to conserve physical energy to cut the maximum amount of firewood, one would lie flat on a bed and rest when one wasn't chopping. But the mind cannot rest. Even in sleep you dream, even if you forget your dreams. The mind is always turning. It gets its relaxation only by variety. That is what makes mental rest. So when you've reached your optimum point you must stop. You must go out and do something. It doesn't matter what - anything so long as you are actively doing something else but work. (1)、For a student who wants to be an efficient learner, it's useful to ______. A:spend as much time as possible on study every day B:make good use of the spare time C:get his study as near the optimum point as possible D:strike a balance between work and play 答案:C (2)、______ is a good sign that a students has reached the crest for the day. A:Having trouble sleeping B:Reading without absorbing the material C:Getting tired of one's reading assignment D:Feeling unable to follow the teacher 答案:B (3)、People's misunderstanding about the mind is that ______. A:the mind works the same way as the body B:the mind doesn't need to have a rest C:having a good rest will do harm to the mind D:a healthy body results from a healthy mind 答案:A (4)、The body is different from the mind because ______. A:it needs rest to regain energy B:performing different tasks can help the body regain energy C:it has the energy optimum point D:being tired will affect its performance 答案:A (5)、The best way to relax the mind after study is to ______. A:go to bed and have a good sleep B:go over the lesson one has learned C:refer to the notebook again and again for better understanding D:try something different in an active way 答案:D 4、Human needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat, when a manager gets a new sports car, a big house and pleasure boats dance into view. The many needs of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears. The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this level is satisfied, the second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears. By the end of World War II, these needs were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses. By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s, a fourth level of needs appeared: the "life-enriching" level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction, that is, the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called "luxury" items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical and dental care, and recreation. Also included here are fancy goods and the latest styles in clothing. On the fourth level, a lot of money is spent on services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of needs as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level? A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels. (1)、According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when ______. A:he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelter B:he has saved up enough money C:he has satisfied his hunger D:he has learned to build houses 答案:C (2)、It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War II, most Americans ______. A:lived in poverty B:were very rich C:had the good things on the first three levels D:did not own automobiles 答案:D (3)、Which of the following is NOT related to "physical satisfaction"? A:A successful career. B:A comfortable home. C:A good meal. D:A family car. 答案:A (4)、What is the main concern of man on the fourth level? A:The more goods the better. B:The more "luxury" items the better. C:The more mental satisfaction the better. D:The more earnings the better.答案:C (5)、The author tends to think that the fifth level ______. A:would be little better than the fourth level B:may be a lot more desirable than the first four C:can be the last level D:will become attainable before the government takes actions 答案:B 5、Though some people have suggested that women should return to housework in order to leave more jobs for men, the idea has been rejected by both women and men in public opinion polls. Lately some union officials have suggested that too many women are employed in type of work more suitable for men and that women should step aside to make way for unemployed young men. They argue that women - especially women in their childbearing years actually delay economic development and result in lower productivity, poor quality and inefficiency. To solve the problem, they have suggested that the working women stay at home while their husbands or brothers were given double wages. They argue that under these circumstances, families would retain their same level of income, and women could run the house and raise children much better. The suggestion has been rejected by 9 out of 10 people polled. A hundred persons in a big city were questioned last summer. Out of 50 women, 46 said they were unwilling to leave their jobs, no matter what the situation was. The other 4 said they would like to return home if their jobs could be taken by their sons or daughters. Of 50 men polled, only 6 said they would like to see their wives give up their jobs, if it meant higher wages for themselves. Some other people have suggested another way called "phased employment theory". The theory suggests that a woman worker take leave from her job when she is seven months pregnant and stay off the job until her baby reaches the age of 3. It suggests that women on leave receive75 percent of their normal salary and be allowed to return to work after the 3-year period. This will benefit children, women, their families and the society. Some of those polled, both women and men, felt the idea is a good one. It definitely seems to be more acceptable than the suggestion that women return to home forever. (1)、Some union officials have suggested that women should return home because ______. A:all of them are employed in unsuitable types of work B:their participation in work has a bad influence on the economic development C:most skilled male workers are now unemployed D:nowadays no one can take care of children except women 答案:B (2)、Some union officials have suggested that if women resign their jobs, ______. A:they should be allowed to attend school to be trained B:their jobs should be taken over by the male members of their families C:the male employees in their families should receive double wages D:their children should also leave their kindergartens 答案:C (3)、According to the passage, the suggestion that women should return to housework was ______. A:opposed by most men and women B:welcomed by men only C:welcomed by women only D:welcomed by men and women 答案:A (4)、According to the passage we can see "phased employment" means ______ A:two or more women share the same job B:women stay at home on weekdays and go to work on weekends or holidays C:a woman should resign her job forever if she has a child D:women are allowed to take leave from their jobs during their childbearing years 答案:D (5)、Based on the "phased employment" theory, during a woman's leave from her job ______. A:her work should be done by her husband or brot- 配套讲稿:
