Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys, he could only sit on the bench and hardly ever played in games. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always standing with cheers and encouraging him. When John went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a “walk-on”. Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach thought he could provide the other members with the spirit they needed.     The news that he had survived the cut excited him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games. It was the end of this last football season. One day John received a telegram and asked one week off. Nobody knew what happened except the coach. The coach said, “Don’t plan to come back to the game on Saturday. ” Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. When the team was ten points behind, John came back. “Coach, please let me play. I’ve just got to play today, ”said John. The coach pretended not to hear him. But John persisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in. Before long everyone could not believe their eyes. John was doing everything to fight. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, he passed and blocked like a star. And at last his team won the game. After the game, John looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind? ”John swallowed hard and forced a smile, “Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to show him that I could do it. ” 【文章大意】本文叙述了约翰尽管受到身体条件的限制, 只是一名板凳球员, 但父亲总是鼓励他。得知父亲去世的消息后, 约翰请求上场, 最终帮球队力挽狂澜, 证明了自己能行。 1. Why did John hardly have any chance to play in games? A. Because he had no time to practice. B. Because he was too young to play games. C. Because everyone looked down upon him. D. Because his body condition was not good. 由第一段中“But being half the size of the other boys, he could only sit on the bench and hardly ever played in games. ”可知, 但是由于他的体形几乎是其他男孩的一半大小, 只能成为板凳球员, 很少参加比赛。所以约翰几乎没有机会参加比赛的原因是他的身体条件不好。故选D。 2. The underlined phrase “make the cut” in the second paragraph can be replaced by “ ”.   A. make progress B. be allowed to join the team C. cut himself D. be refused by the coach 【解析】选B。 由第二段中“When John went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a “walk-on. ”可知, 当约翰上大学时, 他决定参加足球队的选拔赛, 成为一名临时球员。所以判断出第二段中带下划线的短语“make the cut”可替换为 be allowed to join the team“被允许加入球队”。故选B。 3. From the text we can know that .   A. John felt very depressed as a “walk-on” B. John’s father always taught him how to play C. John’s father went to most of his college games D. the coach was sure John would be the best player one day 【解析】选C。推理判断题。由最后一段中“Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind? ”及“Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play”可知, 约翰是一个临时球员, 几乎没有上场的机会。爸爸来看了他所有的比赛, 但是爸爸去世了, 没有来看他赛季末的比赛。所以推断出约翰的爸爸参加观看了他大部分的大学足球比赛。故选C。 4. This story tells us that .   A. a burden of one’s choice is not felt B. better to do well than to say well C. all roads lead to Rome D. where there is a will, there is a way 【解析】选D。 D。 B It was May 23, 2016. Arnot, the 32-year-old mountain guide, reached the top of Everest without the use of oxygen (氧气) equipment. It was achieved after seven years, three previous attempts, and fourteen straight hours of climbing. After 15 minutes at the top, Arnot began her descent (下坡). Eight hours later, she reached the camp at 7, 600 meters and became the first American woman—and only the seventh woman ever—to successfully reach Mount Everest without oxygen equipment. “There are so many reasons for her impressive achievement, especially the physical and emotional efforts that she’ s put forth over the years to make this happen, ” says the professional climber and photographer Richards, “The mental courage that it requires is something very few people have. ” Arnot didn’t start climbing until she was 19 years old. Money was tight in her family, and climbing mountains never occurred in her mind. After graduating from college, Arnot was invited by her friend to climb a mountain. “It totally changed my life, ”says Arnot. “I always know that if you want something, you can achieve it, but knowing what you want is a whole different thing, ” she says. “I am athletic but not competitive. After my first climbing, I knew immediately that mountains are what I want—as that is where I felt home for the first time in my life. ” After that first climb, she devoted herself to learning how to climb and move through mountains. It was during her second trip to Everest in 2009 that she first set her sights on a no-oxygen attempt. However, while hiking into Everest Base Camp that year, she hurt her leg and wasn’t able to climb without oxygen. In 2013 she nearly made it to the top, but was forced to take oxygen at 8, 504 meters while helping another climber. When Arnot finally stood a top Everest, she called her best friend, “I reached the top and I’m not using any oxygen. ” Then, tears began to stream down from her eyes. So much of Arnot’s life has been about pushing the limits of her abilities, and in this case, she’s also pushed up against the outer limits of the human spirit. 【文章大意】这是一篇记叙文。19岁才开始登山运动的阿诺特, 经过数次的困难和挑战之后, 终于在32岁时在没有使用氧气设备的情况下登上了珠穆朗玛峰。 5. Arnot fell in love with climbing because .   A. money was no longer a problem to her B. mountains gave her the feeling of comfort C. she tried to be more athletic and competitive D. she wanted to build up her body through climbing 【解析】选B。 细节理解题。根据第四段最后一句After my first climbing, I knew immediately that mountains are what I want—as that is where I felt home for the first time in my life. 可知阿诺特爱上登山是因为登山让她第一次有家的感觉, 即山给了她家一样的舒适和安慰感, 故选B。 7. Which of the following can best describe Arnot? A. Determined and brave. B. Cautious and honest. C. Caring and open-minded. D. Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind. 1 Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.     Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive (积极主动的) approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 2 Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often leads to laziness. 3 Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.     Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 4 Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.      5 Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.   A. To fight family laziness, set an example. B. Knowing how to fight laziness is important. C. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep. D. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness. E. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal. F. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life. G. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child. 【文章大意】懒惰的人不可能做成什么事情, 但是思维的一些变化可以让你消灭懒惰。本文介绍了如何通过思维的改变, 来消灭懒惰。 1. 【解析】选C。根据下文“Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. ”可知对抗懒惰的一个方法是有足够的睡眠, 故选C。 2. 【解析】选E。根据上文“Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. ”可知有了强大的决心, 你可以达到目标, 故选E。 3. 【解析】选G。根据下文中“Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film. ”可知此句是说通过奖励自己, 让自己积极起来, 改变自己的懒惰, 故选G。 4. 【解析】选A。根据下文“Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal.
