The process does take some time and planning, but once you create a good seedstarting setup, you'll be able to grow flowers and vegges not available at your local nursery! Location. Choose a place for your seedstarting setup that is safe from kids and pets, but where you'll be able to easily access them each day. Basements, spare rooms, or kitchens are often good places; make sure you'll have ready access to water and protect surfaces that could be damaged by soil or moisture (水分). Containers. The possibilities for seedstarting containers seem endless. You can buy readymade growing kits to start seeds indoors that include trays, soil, and covers to provide moisture, but you don't need to spend a lot. You can start seedlings in plastic trays, peat pots, even eggshells! Soil. You can use the potting medium provided with some seed starting kits, or purchase a sterile (无菌的) seed-starting mix from your local nursery. Don't use old potting soil you have sitting around from previous years or dirt from your outdoor garden, as it may contain unwanted old seeds or pests. Light. You'll be most successful if you have bright light available for most of the day (12-16 hours). This isn't usually something you can get just from a sunny windowsill (窗台), especially in late winter and spring. You'll find it's worth it to make the investment in some fluorescent growing lights that can be kept at an optimal distance from your growing seedlings. Water. Seedlings need consistent moisture, since they haven't yet developed root systems and leaf networks to help them store it in dry times. Watering from above can be damaging to newlysprouted fragile (脆弱的) stems, so the easiest way to give seedlings the water they need is with bottom watering. Set your containers into a tray holding a few inches of water, and add more when the tray dries out. Temperature. Many seeds need ideal soil temperatures before they will germinate. Starting seeds indoors allows you to control the soil temperatures and get a headstart before the ground outdoors is ready, but if you're working in a basement or garage, you might need to provide a little extra heat to help them along. 1.Gardeners who have rich experience ________. A.can easily start seeds indoors B.are skilled at making plans for starting seeds C.also need to take the process of starting seeds seriously D.are unwilling to start seeds indoors 答案:C 细节理解题。 A项表述与“even the most experienced gardeners are often hesitant to start seeds indoors”相矛盾;B项“经验丰富的园艺师擅长做计划”与D项“不愿意室内种植”的表述与原文不相符;故C项正确。 2.From Paragraph 6 we can infer ________. A.we should give seedlings the water with bottom watering B.it's necessary to water seedlings from above C.seedlings' root systems and leaf networks have developed a lot D.adding water to your containers from time to time is necessary 答案:A 推理判断题。 3.What's the closest meaning of the underlined word “germinate” in the last paragraph? A.To produce buds or branches. B.To make it possible to happen. C.To make something new. D.To keep it aside for future use. 4.What's the best title of the passage? A.Several Ways of Planting Seeds B.Starting Seeds Needs Care And Patience C.A Good Seedstarting Setup Is Necessary D.Tips About Starting Seeds Indoors 答案:D 标题判断题。 New Map of the Sea Floor Until recently, scientists had mapped only about 20 percent of the sea floor. But our knowledge of the deep seas is changing because of information from satellites (卫星). Scientists have produced a new map that provides a detailed picture of the oceans. The map is expected to help oceanographers (海洋学家), industry and governments. The new map is twice as detailed as the map made 20 years ago. David Sandwell is a geophysics professor at the University of California. He and other scientists worked on the mapping project. He says they turned to space to look deeper into the ocean. The scientists collected and studied information from two satellites. Some of the data came from the European Space Agency's Cryo2 satellite. It was placed in Earth's orbit to watch sea ice. The other satellite is the American Space Agency's Jason1. It is studying the surface of the oceans. Scientists combined the satellite data with images gathered by sonar (声波定位仪) equipment on ships. Sonar works by sending sound waves through the water. When the sound waves hit an object, its presence is confirmed. The new map shows the sea floor as it has never been seen before. It shows thousands of underwater mountains and places where continents pulled apart. It shows where earthquakes were active many years ago. They all are buried deep underneath the ocean floor. David Sandwell says the map is a powerful tool for fisheries, those interested in protecting the environment and for oil exploration. “The petrol exploration industry is interested in how to reconnect the continents, bring them back together tectonically (地质构造地) so you can map the basins on one continental edge—say, Africa—and use that to establish where the similar basin would be on the other continental edge in South America.” If scientists know that information, they may be able to find oil fields. The new data also will help scientists improve their estimates of ocean depths. Mr Sandwell thinks scientists will make many more discoveries as they examine the new map and the information it provides. [精彩范文] A new map offering a clear picture of the oceans has been made.
