From now on you are in the ninth grade. In the year to come, I believe, you will have more tests. Then how do you study for a test? Look at the pictures and check√the ways you study for an English test. Then add other ways you use sometimes. —How do you study for an English test? —I study for an English test___. (by reading to the tape/by underlining the expressions/by reading beyond the text/by doing used exam papers/by going over exercises books/by copying down the text/by learning the text by heart/by speaking with classmates/by watching English films Now raise your hand and report your added ways to the class. I will make a list of all the added ways on the blackboard. 1b Listening and speaking Listen to understand how these people in the picture on page 2 study for a test. While listening, pay your attention to examples of “verb+by …structure” and the useful expressions in it. Now go to read on page 128 the tapescript. While reading try to cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study all the predicates, circle all the linking words and underline all the expressions. That’s grammar study, indeed. Now read aloud after me the “Target Language”, the three dialogues on the blackboard. We are going to talk in imitation of the conversation we have just read. 2a Checking and speaking Now let’s go to page 3. Listen to the tape and check the questions you hear. Listen to understand how these people in the picture on page 2 study for a test. While listening, pay your attention to examples of “verb+by …structure” and useful expressions in it. Objectives ● To learn to understand and use verb+by … ● To read and speak about how to learn best Procedures ■Warming up by telling about “How do I learn best?” Hello, class. First I’d like to tell you how I learn best. Do you like to know how I learn best? I learn best by using flashcards. I learn best by reading aloud the texts. I learn best by memorizing new words. I learn best by staying up late in the night. Then how do you learn best? Can you tell your partner how you learn best? Attention, class! To learn more about how others learn best let’s go to page 4. We are going to read something this time. 3a Reading and writing We are going to read the article on page 4. First we shall read to the tape together. That is, we start reading aloud as the recorder goes, and we stop reading aloud as the recorder stops. While reading, let’s pay enough attention to the pauses, the pronunciation and the intonation of the native reader. Make our reading aloud as the same as the reader’s. Next we are going to read aloud the article slowly and clearly. We will try to divide it into thought groups. We shall read the article once again, this time, to underline all the useful expressions in it. After school, you are going to write them down in your notebook. Imitation writing is taking the work of a 'master' writer and using the structure and patterns as a form to learn and work from. 3b Pairing and acting Silence, please! We are going to have a role play in pairs. One of the pair is to be one of the people in 3a. The other is to interview him or her about learning English. Zhao: Excuse me, Li Hong. Period 4: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking (Page 5) (What’s the problem?) Objectives ● To learn to understand and use verb+by … ● To read, write, listen and speak about your problem s in learning English Procedures ■Warming up by reading to the recording Hello, everyone. To begin with, let’s listen and read to the recording of the text “How do you learn best?” That is, read aloud to the tape, as fast as the tape goes, as clearly as the native reader reads. OK?
