A cactus(仙人掌) stood all alone in the desert. It said to itself, “I can’t offer shade(阴凉处) or juicy fruit to any passing travelers. I can’t see that I have any use for others. I wish I could do something useful.”

Passage 3
Tu Youyou, 85 years old, is the woman who uses a kind of plant’s special power to save many lives. She won a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in because of her great contribution. She shared the prize with two other scientists from the U.S. and Japan.
When Tu joined the national research team to find the medicine that could fight against malaria(疟疾) in the 1960s and 1970s, things were hard. The team didn’t have advanced instruments back then. Tu even tested medicines by eating them herself. Tu’s team searched old Chinese medicine books by hand and tested over 2,000 traditional recipes.
To do research, Tu also had to move around a lot. Once she returned home after traveling for six months, her little daughter didn’t recognize her and hid from the “strange woman”.
Finally, Tu found artemisinin(青蒿素) in sweet wormwood in 1971. She spent the following tens of years trying to improve the medicine. According to World Health Organization, about 200 million people suffer from malaria around the world, and about half a million die each year.
Artemisinin is still the most useful medicine against malaria known today.
Tu never complains about how hard she works. “I feel more rewarded(获得回报旳) when the medicine has saved so many malaria patients.” she said. Albert Einstein is right once again! The great man thought of the idea about gravitational waves(引力波) 100 years ago, but scientists are finally discovering the truth of it now. But what are gravitational waves, and why are they important?
Well, gravitational waves are made by black holes and can change time in space. Black holes aren’t holes but a lot of matter packed into a very small area, according to NASA(美国航空航天局). They are created when a star, much like our sun, explodes(爆炸) and leaves behind this thick material. It doesn’t shine like a star anymore, and it becomes black.
Imagine you throw a stone into a pool. It creates ripples(涟漪) that change the pattern of the water. That’s similar to the way that gravitational waves form.
About 1.3 billion years ago, there were two black holes that kept moving closer and closer together. Finally, they knocked into each other and formed one big black hole. The energy given out created ripples in space. These ripples are gravitational waves.
Gravitational waves are hard to discover. A special gravitational wave observatory(天文台) called LIGO discovered the ripples on February 11, . Einstein was wise to know this 100 years ago before we had the technology.
This is important because it can give us a new view of the universe(宇宙) we live in, according to LIGO scientists. Now, we will be able to discover things that are much farther away from the earth in the universe. And who knows, this discovery could even lead to time travel!
