Believing my career was over, I felt extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and competing. That was it -- the encouragement I needed. I could still be a winner if I believed in myself. I am not saying that it isn’t difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn't finished yet. Nothing is to stand in my way.” Karen Pickering Swimming World Champion “I swim 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I manage that sort of workload by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success---you can’t follow a career in any field without being well-organized. List what you believe you can achieve. Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are, and you’ll be a step closer to achieving them.” Kirsten Best Poet & Writer “When things are getting hard, a voice inside my head tells me that I can’t achieve something. Then, there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to concentrate. When I feel tense, it helps a lot to repeat words such as ‘calm’, ‘peace’ or ‘focus’, either out loud or silently in my mind. It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This is a habit that can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychological tool” 21. What does Sir Steven Redgrave mainly talk about?_________ A. Training helped him defeat his disease. B. He overcame the shadow of illness to win. C. Difficulties influenced his career. D. Specialists offered him medical advice. 22. What does Karen Pickering put on top of her diary? ________ A. Her achievements. B. Her sports career. C. Her training schedule. D. Her daily happenings. 23. What does the underlined word “distractions” probably refer to?_________ A. Activities that turn one's attention away. B. Words that help one to feel less tense. C. Ways that help one to focus. D. Habits that make it hard for one to relax. B Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics, but sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself. Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it. It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true. The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck! 24. You need to build a positive self-image when you _________. A. dare to challenge yourself B. feel it hard to change yourself C. are unconfident about yourself D. have a high opinion of yourself 25. How should you change your self-image according to the passage? A. To keep a different image of others. B. To make your life successful. C. To understand your own world. D. To change the way you think. 26. What is the passage mainly about? A. How to prepare for your success. B. How to build a positive self-image. C. How to face challenges in your life. D. How to develop your good qualities. 27. Who are the intended readers of the passage? A. Parents. B. Adolescents. C. Educators. D. People in general. C It would certainly be the most unique car on the school run. Dutch researchers have unveiled the Stella Lux, a four-sweater family car that is not only powered by the sun, but generates much more energy than it uses. It can travel 621 miles on a full charge, and even comes with an app to automatically work out the most efficient routes. Stella Lux was developed by Solar Team Eindhoven (STE), a group of 21 students from different faculties of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The team won the Cruiser Class title 2 years ago and that is in 2015 with its first car, Stella. “By deciding to further improve on our solar-powered four-person car, we're once again aiming to win while at the same time proving that this energy-positive family car offers a feasible future prospect” says Solar Team Eindhoven's Team Manager Tom Selten. This year the student team is once again taking part in the biennial(两年一次的) Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia. The race for solar-powered cars covers a distance of 3,000 km, and goes right through the heart of the outback from Darwin to Adelaide. After the World Solar Challenge the team are planning a tour through the Netherlands, China and the USA. “With Stella Lux we want to take the next step in bringing a solar car to the consumer. Therefore we want to show Lux to as many people as possible and we hope to inspire them” says Tom Selten. “We see a future where everybody drives a solar car, where all cars produce energy instead of consuming it.” Stella Lux generates electricity via 5.8 sq m (62.4 sq ft) of solar cells and has an additional battery capacity of 15 kWh. A full charge provides a range of over 1,000 km (621 mi) in the Dutch climate or 1,100 km (684 mi) in the Australian climate, and the car has a top speed of 125 km/h (78 mph). To achieve this figure, the car has been designed to be both lightweight and aerodynamic. The efficiency of Stella Lux is improved by using a specially designed navigation system. The system monitors weather and chooses the best route accordingly. 28. What is TRUE about Stella Lux? A. A solar-powered four-person car aimed at schools. B. It produces less energy than it uses. C. A full charge can't provide it with a range of 621 miles. D. It works out the best route with the help of a specially designed navigation system. 29. What do we know about Solar Team Eindhoven? A. They are car developers. B. They are car racers. C. They are car advertisers. D. They are car dealers. 30. How is the car designed to achieve its top speed? A. By making the car lightweight and aerodynamic. B. By using a specially designed navigation system. C. By generating electricity via solar cells. D. By improving its solar-powered system. 31. What is the team's attitude towards this energy-positive family car's future? A. Negative. B Worried. C. Optimistic. D. Uncertain. D The World Health Organization report compared the “obesity-related behaviors” for youngsters across 42 nations. And it reveals UK kids are among the laziest. Among teenage girls, the Scots toped the league table for most screen time, with 80 percent spending at least two hours a day on computers. Wales came fourth with 76 percent, and England seventh with 75 percent. Girls in Armenia and Albania were least likely to spend hours idling online. Screen time figures for boys were even higher. Wales was second in the European “couch potato” league, with 85 per cent glued to their screens for at least two hours. Scotland was third with 84 per cent, and England 15th with 77 per cent. Boys in Switzerland and Portugal were least likely to dedicate two hours a day to sitting in front of a computer. Lead researcher Dr Jo Inchley, from the University of St Andrews, said social media was impacting on kids' health. She said, “We know there are risks, such as cyber bullying and impact on mental health. Also, there are longer-term impacts on physical health from being sedentary. One of the main challenges is that this kind of activity (social media and computer use) is so much part of young people's lives these days.” She said more needs to be done to get kids moving throughout the day. Dr Steven Mann, research director for UK Active said the findings were “alarming”. He said, “Modern life has changed, but when teens are spending hours hunched over Facebook, Instagram and videogames, they simply aren't getting the exercise that they need. These alarming inactivity figures show that playtime is over before it has started for too many children, putting them at far greater risk of future conditions like heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.” Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum, warned Brit teens are now “slaves to hand-held devices”. And the WHO warns four in five fat teens will continue to struggle with their weight throughout life. The report also shows less than half of UK youngsters consume fruit or veg daily. 32.
