Valentine’s Day was my father’s holiday. My sisters and I learned early to be good on that day. We 1 waited a long time for Dad to get home and then quickly lined up like good little soldiers as he gave each child a small, heart-shaped box, holding some chocolates.  It caused 2 reactions (反应) as we went through the periods in life. In the elementary school years, we would rush home and wait for Dad. In junior high, we felt a little embarrassed (尴尬的). In high school, we thought we were too cool to be rushing home. It seemed that no one was moving. I came to the self-service machine where the queue was much shorter. I don’t like self-service because I’m not good at it. The machine always asks me something I don’t know how to answer. I hate this. I like the old-fashioned way: hand to hand, human to human. I think it is fast and friendly. The woman in the front of the queue was clicking away at the screen. And the clicks were surprisingly loud. There were many signs of hesitation(犹豫) on her part. I felt sorry for her: The machine could smell fear and nervous. The next person spent a long time, too. I breathed deeply. By the time it was my turn, I was so nervous that I felt the beat of my heart. I felt a growing pressure and I tried to minimize(减少) the seconds between clicks. Finally it was time to slide in a credit card. The machine didn’t take it. “Trying putting it in the other way,” the gentleman behind me suggested. No good. “I’ve got a different card,” I said, and looked for it in my handbag, beginning to sweat. The machine wanted a PIN (个人密码), but not the one I suggested. “Start over,” I clicked; I tried the first card again. Oh, no. I had to start all over again. “I’m sorry,” I said, looking back, embarrassed. “You all go ahead.” “Don’t give up,” said the nice man behind me. “Try it again. We’re all friends here, right?” Seeing smiling on their faces, I tried again, clicked carefully and introduced my credit card as if I were presenting it to the queen. Finally, I made it! I couldn’t have been happier. Everyone burst into applause (鼓掌). Comfort and joy! 9.Before Christmas the post office . ( )  A.was closed B.was very busy C.got a new machine D.had a party at the hall 10.How did the author feel while waiting for her turn? ( ) A.She felt a little bored. B.She felt very relaxed. C.She felt a little excited. D.She felt very nervous. 11.What did the man behind the author do? ( ) A.He encouraged the author. B.He laughed at the author. C.He did it for the author. D.He rushed the author. Do you use emoji very often? It’s said that emoji is the fastest growing language in history. Five billion emojis are sent every day just on some social media, such as WeChat and Facebook. 72 percent of 18- to 25-year-olds find it easier to express their feelings in emoji pictures than through the written word, according to a survey for the TalkTalk mobile phone company, based in London. They’re appearing in some surprising places too. One court judge in England used a smiley face emoji in a document to make it easy to explain the court’s decision to children. It’s not surprising that there’s a day to celebrate emojis, but what do you know about its organizers, the website Emojipedia? The company Unicode actually creates the computer code that gives us emojis, but Emojipedia is where you can learn exactly what each emoji means and how to use it. Most of us probably know and use the most popular emojis, like the classic smiley face, heart or the smiling face with tears of laughter. But if you want to grow your emoji vocabulary, you can use Emojipedia to find out new ways to speak emojis. Unicode adds new emojis all the time. They might take time to be available on all platforms (平台) and phones, but you will see them immediately on Emojipedia. An important improvement to the emoji list, which had 2,823 emojis after its 2018 update, is to make the emojis more various. The code for each emoji is the same, but different platforms, like WeChat or Facebook, design their emojis in different ways. When Emojipedia was deciding on which day to hold World Emoji Day, only Apple was using a calendar emoji with a date on, 17 July. So, they decided to celebrate World Emoji Day on 17 July too. If you want to send someone a message using emojis to celebrate World Emoji Day, Emojipedia has plenty to choose from, including six colors of raising hand emojis, five party emojis and two kinds of fireworks. You can even choose a world globe that shows the part of the world you live in. Whichever emojis you choose to celebrate, we wish you Happy World Emoji Day. 12.How many emojis are sent on social media every day?   13.Where can we learn the meanings and uses of emojis?   14.Can different platforms design their emojis in different ways?   15.When is World Emoji Day?   16.What’s the passage mainly about? 根据句中“waited a long time”可推知,“我们”耐心地等了好长时间。 根据下文“Even after we all moved out of the house, when Valentine’s Day came, there was a little box of chocolates waiting for each of us.” 故选A。 故选A。 根据下文“And come February, when those little heart-shaped boxes of chocolates appear in store windows, Dad’s tradition lives on my heart.” B。 Ⅱ.9.B 10.D 11.A Ⅲ.12.Five billion. 13.On (the website) Emojipedia. 14.Yes, they can. 15.It’s on 17 July. 16.It’s mainly about the introduction of emojis. 5
