B Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758, in the West Division of Hartford. Noah's was an ordinary colonial family. At that time, few people went to college, but Noah loved to learn so his parents let him go to Yale, Connecticut's only college. He left for New Haven in 1774, when he was 16. Noah's years at Yale were the years of the Revolutionary War. Noah did not like American schools. Sometimes 70 children of all ages were crammed into oneroom schoolhouses with no desks, poor books, and untrained teachers. Their books came from England. Noah thought that Americans should learn from American books, so in 1783, Noah wrote his own textbook: A Grammatical Institute of the English Language. Most people called it the “Bluebacked Speller” because of its blue cover. For 100 years, Noah's book taught children how to read, spell, and pronounce words. It was the most popular American book of its time. Ben Franklin used Noah's book to teach his granddaughter to read. When Noah was 43, he started writing the first American dictionary. He did this because Americans in different parts of the country spelled, pronounced and used words differently. He thought that all Americans should speak the same way. He also thought that Americans should not speak and spell just like the English. Noah used American spellings like “color” instead of the English “colour”, “music” instead of “musick”, “check” instead of “cheque” and “center” instead of “centre”. He also added American words that weren't in English dictionaries like “skunk” and “squash”. It took him over 27 years to write his book. When finished in 1828, Noah's dictionary had 70 000 words in it. Noah did many things in his life. He worked for copyright laws, wrote textbooks, Americanized (美国化) the English language, and edited (编辑) magazines. When Noah Webster died in 1843 he was considered an American hero. 25.What is NOT the reason why Noah didn't like American schools? A. There were too many students in one classroom sometimes. B. The teachers were not trained. C. The students in the same class were of all ages. D. He wanted to write American books. 26.Which of the following is TRUE about Noah? A. He studied in Yale during the Revolutionary War. B. Ben Franklin used Noah's dictionary to teach his grandchild. C. Noah started to write the first American dictionary in 1783. D. Noah was 75 when he finished his first American dictionary. 27. According to Paragraph 4, which of the following words would Noah Webster prefer to use? A. colour B. Musick C. center D. Cheque C “If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!” That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. All children soon learn what “Don't touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things as we might buy food, clothes and so on. To see something well, we have to touch it. There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them! Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show. If we want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see! 28.By touching things, ______. I looked at her for a few moments, wondering how I got into this mess (困境), when suddenly an idea came to me. Picking up two baskets from the living room, I explained, “When everyone is born, he or she has a little basket. This little one here is yours. The big one is mine. As you grow, so does the basket. You can see your little basket is inside mine because when you were born, there were too many things you couldn't do for yourself. I did everything you couldn't do on your own.” She nodded. “Well, as you grew older and began to do some things on your own, I began placing (放置) a few more things in your basket. When you learned to tie your shoes, that went in your basket.” She said softly, “I can tie my own shoes.” “Right. As you grow older, there will be more and more things you must do on your own.” As I spoke, I gradually took her basket out of mine and handed it to her. “You will finally carry your own basket with things only you can do.” She looked up at me and said, “I understand. There are some things that I have to do for myself because they are in my basket.” 32.What was Sara's problem? A. She didn't have a basket. B. She didn't want her own basket. C.
