They were testing him for autism(自闭症). My brother, Captain, four years old at the time, had always been my best friend. We would wrestle, play games and have the best of times together, even though I was much older than him. My mom told me about the appointment, but, when she got to the point about the test, she stopped. I turned around and she had tears in her eyes. I stared at her, wishing she would say something, when I realized what that silence meant. My eyes got blurry(模糊的)and my breathing got very difficult. “The test was positive, sweetheart,” she said. I broke down, crying. My mom was trying to cool me down, saying that Captain couldn’t see me like this and I had to be a big girl, when the front door opened, and Captain, our three-year-old sister Cali, and my father came in. I walked out of the kitchen. I couldn’t look at him. Everything had just changed. He was no longer that little baby brother who was just a normal little boy. We had to move a while later because Captain needed treatment. One day, I was standing in the bus line waiting when the “short bus” came and picked some kids up. The children in the other line started making jokes about the “retards (智力迟钝者)” on that bus and I felt a strange feeling in my stomach, which I had never felt before. During a band class, my teacher, Mrs. Young, stopped our playing to give us some feed-back. “Guys, we’re playing like the kids on the short bus! Come on!” I felt that same feeling I had in the bus line. The entire room was laughing when I raised my hand. “Yes, Alexis?” Mrs. Young asked. “I don’t think we should make fun of the short bus, because there are a lot of people on that bus who have great personalities and have the same feelings as we do. And also, I know some people on those buses and they are some of the most caring, sweetest, and smartest people, so I would appreciate it if you didn’t make fun of them.” Everyone stared at me. Mrs. Young apologized for the comment and then started the song again. 21. What did Alexis think her mother’s silence mean in Paragraph One? A. There was no chance for Alexis to play games with Captain. B. Captain was likely to miss the appointment. C. Captain really suffered from autism. D. Alexis had to prepare dinner quickly. 22. Why did Alexis go out of the kitchen? A. Because she didn’t want to help with dinner. B. Because she would be much sadder looking at Captain. C. Because she wanted to play with Captain outside. D. Because she wasn’t willing to meet a sick brother. 23. What Alexis said to her teacher can be seen as a kind of . A. threat B. agreement C. apology D. disapproval B Men and women are different, particularly when they are shopping for clothes. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his aim is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock (有现货的), the business of trying it on follows at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone’s satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else. No good salesman brings out a substitute impolitely; he does so with skill: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, Sir, but would you like to try it on for size? It happens to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: “This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.” Now how does a woman buy clothes? In almost every aspect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she is influenced by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. What she wants is to find something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend hours going from one shop to another, to and fro. It is a tiring process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands. 24. The underlined sentence “the price is a secondary consideration” in the second paragraph means when a man is shopping . A. he buys things of good quality even if they are very dear B. he cares about whether the thing is what he needs first and then the price C. he buys whatever he likes without considering its value D. he buys things without considering its price 25. What does a man do when he can not get exactly what he wants? A. He usually does not buy anything. B. He buys a similar thing because of the color he wants. C. So long as the style is right, he buys the thing. D. At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys. 26. What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes? A. They welcome suggestions from almost anyone. B. Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes. C. Women buy things without giving the matter proper thought. D. They try to buy clothes for more than its real value. 27. What is the main difference between men and women shoppers? A. Men do not try clothes on in a shop while women do. B. Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not. C. Men go shopping based on need, but women often not. D. Women buy more clothes than men. C Every day is a gift, and if you look forward to spending each day with happiness, wake up every morning with a positive attitude and enjoy a beautiful day! Set up a daily plan for yourself and ensure that you reserve enough time for your homework. Also, don’t forget to spare some time for play! Stop being lazy and start participating in your life instead of just watching it pass by. Try to do something fun and constructive every day. Read a book, write something interesting in your diary, try a new hobby, spend time with your friends, or just watch your favorite show on television, and you will see how every moment of your day unfolds. You’ll achieve better results, and eventually greater success. However, every day will not be the way you want it to be. Some days will be good, while some will be bad. You won’t be always happy and smiling. You may come across many challenges. Don’t forget to remind yourself to slow down and take care of yourself. In today’s busy lifestyle, it is necessary to relax to bring balance and joy back into your life. So, take charge of your life. Enjoy and appreciate the small things around you. Do a good deed and make others happy. Sometimes, doing something as simple as having a cup of tea with an old friend or a family member, listening to a cheerful song, or just writing down all the things that make you happy could indeed turn your day around! Review and analyze your day before you retire at night. Reward yourself for completing the set goals and prepare the stage for the next day. This will influence your sleep and overall happiness levels. Plan for the next day, take a good rest, and wake up fresh the next morning! If you feel you are doing the same things every day, step out of your comfort zone and set aside some time to do things you have never done before. Stretch your limits. Not only will it make a boring day exciting but it will also build your confidence. 28. Who are the target readers of the passage? A. Teachers. B. Students. C. Workers. D. People in general. 29. Why is “Read a book” mentioned in the second paragraph? A. To show readers what to do to enjoy every day positively. B. To tell readers to learn hard for their future. C. To provide readers with ways of killing time. D. To offer readers suggestions on hobbies. 30. What can we infer from the third paragraph? A. Every day is beautiful and worth remembering. B. Your future is up to yourself and your friends. C. A good start is definitely good for the future. D. You should make a difference in your day. 31. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Live Every Day to the Fullest B. Be Grateful for Every day C. Act Now to Make a Change D. Set Aside Time for Daily Responsibilities D In Los Angeles, drivers spend sixty-one hours every year stuck in traffic. These drivers know all too well how bad the traffic can be. “There’re too many cars, and you can’t move around a lot.” Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (导航) system. He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “What’s unique is that we use a lot of data that’s currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what’s going to happen in front of you when you leave home.” Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just respond to current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give the fastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahabi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities. “I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this.” Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple. 32. Drivers in Los Angeles were mentioned in order to . A. show care for them B. introduce the topic C. solve traffic problems D. introduce their life 33. What is unique about ClearPath? A. It helps drivers know the road conditions ahead of time. B. It can ensure that you will never be late for work. C. It helps drivers see clearly what happens on the road. D. It can use a lot of information all over the world. 34. The underlined word “hits” in the fifth paragraph probably means . A. have an accident B. turn left or right C. get to D. collect traffic data 35. What’s Professor Shahabi’s attitude toward his invention? A. Disappointed. B. Optimistic. C. Annoyed D. Worried. 其次节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The word addiction usually makes you think of alcohol or drugs. 36 Some people are compulsive (难以自制的) shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games. 37 Many people enjoy going to malls or stores more and more every day, but it’s more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopaholics (购物狂). They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing it. They are hooked (着迷) on shopping and usually buy things that they don’t need. Even though the- 配套讲稿:
