英语试题 其次部分 阅读理解 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A Have you ever been to the world’s smallest bookstore? The World’s Smallest Bookstore, whose official name is just these three words, sits quietly about 100 miles northeast of Toronto. The bookstore is about 10 feet by 10 feet,so it is easy to imagine how tiny it really is.The bookstore is open 24 hours a day.Inside the bookstore are various books, especially literary books and classic authors’ works. So if you are looking for something less popular, you may get a bit disappointed there. Another special feature of this bookstore is that each book only costs three dollars. All the expenses are paid on the honor system, which means buyers should make a note of what they’ve bought and leave their money by themselves. So the tools of the trade in this bookstore are quite simple: pens, papers, light bulbs and a label-maker. In order to catch passers-by’s attention, the billboards(广告牌)of the bookstore are several times bigger than the store itself. With these large eye-catchers,many people are willing to stop by and have a visit. 21.What’s the passage mainly about? A.The world’s smallest bookstore. B.A strange way of selling books. C.The popular books nowadays. D.The popular bookstores in the world. 22.Which of the following books might you most probably get in the store? A.Books on popular science. B.Literary books. C.The year book of a university. D.Books on economic control. 23.How could you buy a book from the store? A.The salesman will help you find the book. B.The salesman will get the money for the book. C.Choose the book(s)and leave the money there. D.Pay on the net and then get the book(s)in the store. B Wake Up,Sleep Gene Some people can stay up all night and still get work done the next day.I’m not one of them. After a night without enough sleep,I feel bad-tempered.I have trouble remembering things. And all I want to do is crawl back into bed and sleep. How do you feel after you’ve stayed up late to finish schoolwork? Or the day after an overnight party? Scientists now say that your answers to these questions may depend on your genes. New research suggests that a gene called period 3 affects how well you function without sleep. The period 3 gene comes in two forms: short and long.Everyone has two copies of the gene. So,you may have two longs, two shorts,or one of each.Your particular combination depends on what your parents passed on to you. Scientists from the University of Surrey in England studied 24 people who had either two short or two long copies of period 3.Study participants had to stay awake for 40 hours straight. Then, they took tests that measured how quickly they pushed a button when number flashed on a screen and how well they could remember lists of numbers. Results showed that the people with the short form of period 3 performed much better on these tests than the people with the long form did.In both groups, people performed worst in the early morning. That’s the time when truck drivers and other night-shift workers say they have the most trouble concentrating. After the first round of experiments, participants were finally allowed to sleep.People in the group that performed well on the tests took about 18 minutes to nod off. People with the long period 3 genes,by contrast, fell asleep in just 8 minutes .They also spent more time in dip sleep. That suggests that people with the long form of the gene need more and deeper sleep to keep their brains working at top form. I think I must have the long form of period3.What about you? 24.The purpose of this passage might be________. A.to tell us the importance of plenty of sleep B.to tell the result of a research on sleepy gene C.to inform the harm of lacking sleep D.to announce the sleeping rules of humans 25.What kind of people need less sleep according to the research? A.Those with two short copies of the gene B.Those with two long copies of the gene C.Those with one short and one long copies of the gene D.Those with three short copies of the gene. 26.If one lacks enough sleep, one should avoid doing important or dangerous things________. A.at noon B.at night C.in the afternoon D.at dawn 27.Why did the writer suppose he or she had a long form of period 3? A.Because the writer could remain energetic without enough sleep. B.Because the writer could do things correctly at dawn. C.Because the writer needed more sleep to keep energetic D.Because the writer recovered quickly after sleep. C Being an astronaut sounds cool, doesn't it? In space, they get to do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity. However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can't do because of their weightless environment, and that's very sad. What's worse, they can't even let their sadness show – because it's impossible to cry in zero gravity. Of course, astronauts can still produce tears. But crying is much more difficult in space, reported The Atlantic in January.Without gravity, tears don't flow downward out of the eyes like they do here on Earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have nowhere to go – they just stick to your eyes. In May 2011,astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks."Tears," he said,"don't fall off your eye...They just kind of stay there." Besides making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain.Back on Earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But that's not the case in space. The space environment dries out astronauts' eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes,it can cause pain rather than comfort."My right eye is painful like crazy." Feustel told his teammate during the walk. Since gravity doesn't work in space, astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears.Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet to wipe the tears away.Another choice is to just wait – "When the tears get big enough they simply break free of the eye and float around," astronaut Ron Parise told The Atlantic. There are lots of small things – things like crying – that we are so used to on Earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a totally different environment, like space. There, astronauts can't talk to each other directly. They also can't eat or drink in normal ways. They can't even burp(打嗝),because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomach. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up(呕吐)everything in their stomach, according to the UK National Space Center. Thus, perhaps it's only space explorers who can honestly say: "Gravity, you're the best." 28.What can we conclude from paragraphs 2 and 3? A.Astronauts are unable to feel sad in space. B.Astronauts produce fewer tears in space. C.Tears produced in space flow down more slowly. D.Tears produced in space don't flow downward. 29.What effect do tears have on astronauts? A.They cause physical pain. B.They bring comfort to them. C.They make their vision clearer. D.They float around and cause trouble. 30.What can the astronaut do to get rid of the tears? A.Rub his eyes against his helmet to let the tears float forward. B.Rub his eyes by hand to let the tears float around. C.Get the tears big enough to fall off of his eyes. D.Get the tears big enough to break away from his eyes. 31.What's the second-to-last paragraph mainly about? A.Suggestions on how astronauts can stay comfortable in space. B.Other basic things that are difficult to do in space. C.Why burping is impossible in space. D.Things that humans can't do without gravity. D Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of fifty. In fact, they say by the age of eighty-five,people are happier with their life than they were when they were eighteen years old. Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five.The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that,as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences. The researchers considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age. The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men. 32.We can learn from the research that ________. A.only when people get older, will they feel happier B.older people usually have no worries in their life C.stress levels among the youngest are the highest of all D.older people are more likely to be thankful in life 33.According to the researchers, what is probably the reason why people grow happier when they get older? A.When people get older, they can’t remember bad experiences. B.When people get older, they have no young children to care about. C.When people get older, they learn to adjust their feelings. D.When people get older, they don’t care about their feelings. 34.What do you think the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is? A.A Gallup organization. B.A popular science magazine. C.A university in New York. D.A research institution 35.What would the writer probably deal with in next paragraph? A.Advice to the young people on how to keep happy. B.Advice to the old people on how to live longer. C.Why women at all ages are more sad, stressed and worried. D.Why people will grow happier with their ages. 其次节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you are hungry, what do you do?
