A In the supermarket my daughter ran over to me with a DVD in her hand. “Mum! Hotel for Dogs is out. Can we get it?” “Of course, but you must use your own money,” I said. She looked at the price and put it back. Usually my kids are happy to spend my money, but are much more careful when it comes to putting_their_hands_in_their_own_pockets. I like to think this is because they have earned their money and it therefore has a value to them. My children's pocket money is rewardbased. They each have certain weekly jobs: they clean their rooms, organize their clothes and clear the table. There are things that we need to pay attention to while rewarding children: the rules need to be clear, transparent (透亮 的) and very fair. And I don't want money to be connected in their minds with the giving of love. Therefore, my children's pocket money is not based on them “being good”. It is too difficult to be good for most normal children all day, every day for a full week. I also don't believe in paying my children to be kind and wellmannered. This is something we expect from them as part of our family and as little human beings. As a reward for good behavior such as going to bed on time, I'd rather use a rewardbased activity or experience that is done together: ice skating or a cinema trip instead of money. Punishments for bad behavior will usually be not allowing them to play. I really want to teach my children good money management skills, and I believe allowing them to earn and spend their own pocket money is a great place to start. 1.The example at the beginning of the text serves as a(n) ________. A. comment B. conclusion C. introduction D. background 答案与解析 C 推理推断题。 2.The underlined phrase “putting their hands in their own pockets” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “________”. A. earning money by themselves B. spending their own money C. visiting the supermarket D. doing certain jobs 答案与解析 B 词义猜想题。 3.The author holds the view that ________. A. kids should earn their pocket money B. kids should learn how to give love C. parents should set an example to their kids D. parents should help manage their kids' money 答案与解析 A 推理推断题。依据第四段最终一句以及第五段的“My children's pocket money is rewardbased ... clear the table”可知,作者赞成孩子们应当自己去挣他们的零用钱,这样他们才会更珍惜。 B Nonverbal Communication When you are in another country, it is important to know the language, but it is equally important to know how to communicate nonverbally Before saying anything, people communicate nonverbally by making gestures. According to an investigation (调查), only 30 to 35 percent of our communication is verbal. When people don't know the language, the most common way to communicate is through gestures. However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world. In the United States, for example, nodding your head up and down means “yes”. In some parts of Greece and Turkey, however, this motion can mean “no”. In Southeast Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying “I've heard you.” In ancient Rome, when the emperor wanted to spare someone's life, he would put his thumb up. Today in the United States, when someone puts his/her thumb up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Sardinia and Greece, the gesture is insulting and should not be used there. In the United States, raising your clasped (握紧的) hands above your head means “I'm the champion” or “I'm the winner”. It is the sign that prizefighters make when they win a fight. When a leading Russian statesman (政治家) made this gesture after a White House meeting, Americans misunderstood and thought he meant he was a winner. In Russia, however, it is a sign of friendship. There are other nonverbal signals that people should be aware of when they go to another country, such as the distance to maintain between speakers. Americans stand closer to each other than English people. English people don't like touching somebody or being touched. Now in America, touch is important. For example, friends touch each other on the arm. They often put an arm around a friend when they say “hello” or “goodbye”. 4.It is very important to know how to communicate nonverbally when you are in another country because ________. A. most people speak different languages B. much of our communication is nonverbal on many occasions C. people usually make gestures before saying anything D. it's easy to learn how to express oneself through gestures 答案与解析 B 推理推断题。由第一段第三句“According to an investigation (调查), only 30 to 35 percent of our communication is verbal”可知。 5.If a native in Singapore nods his head up and down when you talk to him, his motion means ________. A. yes B. no C. that's all right D. I've heard you 答案与解析 D 细节理解题。 由其次段最终一句“In Southeast Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying ‘I've heard you’”可知。 6.When the Russian leader put up his clasped hands after the meeting at the White House ________. A. he meant Russia was the winner B. he was insulting America C. he made a show of friendship to America D. he in fact meant nothing at all 答案与解析 C 细节理解题。由倒数其次段最终一句“In Russia, however, it is a sign of friendship”可知。 7.The gesture of putting one's thumb up should not be used when you are travelling in ________. A. China B. the United States C. Greece D. Southeast Asia 答案与解析 C 细节理解题。 C Why buy art? To answer this question, ask yourself what your reasons are for thinking of getting a piece of art. An artwork can cost a large amount of money, but if it meets your needs, it's worth every penny. Anyone can buy art for almost any reason. Many people buy an artwork simply because they like it, even if the artwork may be created by an unknown artist. Art, as long as you enjoy it, is never a waste of money. Art Is for Enjoyment Art is meant to be shown. Don't ever feel pressured to buy something you won't enjoy looking at day after day, no matter what other people may say. Don't buy something that doesn't attract you just because it is trendy (时髦的), or because the artwork will make a good investment. If you don't like the artwork at all, don't buy it! Art Improves Your Environment Have you ever noticed that all beautiful homes have art as an integral (不行或缺的) part of the decoration? Art lends life and color to otherwise plain and ordinary walls. A well thoughtout art collection will help create a unique ambience (气氛) in your home and make it more attractive. Art Makes a Statement The kind of art you surround yourself with says much about your personality, tastes and values. Art_truly_is_a_mirror_of_the_soul. Art Enriches Your Life Love — even the love of an activity or an inanimate object, such as a work of art — contributes to healthier living and a longer lifespan (寿命). Art should enrich your life. Otherwise, why do you spend precious time and resources on it? Just remember to select something that will appeal to your tastes, and keep to a sensible budget. Good art needn't cost an arm and a leg. Happy art collecting! 8.According to the author, what should you consider when buying a piece of art? A. Whether it brings pleasure to you. B. Whether it is fashionable at present. C. Whether you can profit from it in the end. D. Whether it is created by a famous artist. 由“Don't buy something that doesn't attract you just because it is trendy (时髦的), or because the artwork will make a good investment”可排解B、C两项;由“buy an artwork ... even if the artwork may be created by an unknown artist”可排解D项,再结合“Don't ever feel pressured to buy something you won't enjoy looking at day after day, no matter what other people may say.”和“If you don't like the artwork at all, don't buy it!” 9.The underlined sentence in the passage probably means ________. A. art can show what you look like B. art is an expression of who you are C. a mirror has the feature similar to art D. a mirror can be a true work of art 答案与解析 B 句意猜想题。由“The kind of art you surround yourself with says much about your personality, tastes and values.” 10.In which part of the newspaper are you most likely to find this passage? A. Health Report. B. Art & Life. C. Life Story. D. Painting & Celebrity. We all know that stress (压力) can have a negative (消极的) effect on our minds and bodies.
