(Text 10) When Alex was a child, he lived in his grandmother's home. In summer evenings, he would sit in the open air listening to the stories told by his grandmother and his aunts about their family. He learned a lot about his family history. They talked about things that had happened to the family a very long time ago. They went back and back. It was started with a man called “the African” who was a slave from Africa. He was brought off the ship by a slave owner to work on a farm. He kept trying to run away, but each time he was caught and brought back. The first three times he got a good beating. The fourth time one of his feet was cut off. After that he was sold to another owner for one dollar. On the second owner's farm,he married another slave and had a daughter. When the girl grew up, he told her things about himself—how he was caught while he was cutting wood in the forest not far from his village, and how he was shipped here and sold. He told his daughter not to forget that they were African. A (2021·河北衡水三模) A woman was walking her dog along a beach in New Zealand in late June when she saw something that looked like a white ball in the sand. It turned out to be a young Emperor penguin that was lost. At his age, he should have been close to Antarctic, swimming for fish and playing on the ice floes (浮冰). But this penguin started swimming north and just kept going. The penguin attracted a lot of attention in New Zealand. It has been 40 years since an Emperor penguin was last seen there. Researchers at the Department of Conservation were called in. They decided to watch the penguin closely, but not to disturb it in any way. Many New Zealanders came to Peka Peka Beach to look at the elegant penguin. They were careful to keep their dogs away from it so it wouldn't be frightened. The public nicknamed the animal Happy Feet. Researchers started to notice that Happy Feet didn't seem well. It turned out that he had been eating the sand from the beach, likely thinking it was snow. The public raised more than 11,000 pounds for an operation to get the sand out of his stomach. The operation was a success, and Happy Feet was taken to a zoo in Wellington, NZ. A group of experts met to decide how to help Happy Feet return to the wild. Last Sunday, they put him on a boat called the Tangaroa, in a specially built icefilled box and took him out into the Southern Ocean, southeast of New Zealand. There, they released him into the ocean, which is his natural habitat. He took one last look at his human helpers and then dived into the ocean. “Emperor penguins spend their first five years at sea,” said Peter Simpson of New Zealand's Department of Conservation. “What happens now is up to the penguin.” Happy Feet was fitted with a satellite transmitter (信号放射器) so they can monitor his progress using the Internet. So far, the trackers shows that he swam northeast for a little while before getting his bearings and heading south. 21.Where is the young penguin supposed to appear? Gifts are easy—they're given after all. Choices can be hard. I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I'd been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn't work since most startups don't, and I wasn't sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I'd been a garage inventor. I'd always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion. I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately (最终), I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I'm proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices. 24.What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore? A.His dream of being an inventor. B.The support of his wife. C.The greatly increasing usage of the Internet. D.Millions of exciting titles. 依据文章其次段其次句“I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year.” 25.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence? A.The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him. B.He would be very excited if he tried it out. C.He would be always having a doubt if he didn't try. D.The decision to not try the online bookstore would terrify him. 依据画线句前的“...but ultimately (最终), I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing.” 故选A项。 26.We can know from the passage that ________. A.the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author B.the author wanted someone else to try the idea C.the author might not regret if he failed the idea D.the author might go back to his boss if he failed 答案:C 细节理解题。依据第三段倒数其次句“I didn’t think I'd regret trying and failing.” A项可依据第三段第三句“That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job.” 27.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.Cleverness and Kindness B.The Starting of Amazon C.Following My Passion D.We Are What We Choose 答案:D 主旨大意题。 C (2021·陕西五校1月检测) You signed up for soccer, and played every game of the season. Sure, you're not the best player on the team, but most days you gave it your all. Do you deserve a trophy(奖杯)? If the decision is up to Carol Dweck, the answer would likely be no. She's a psychology professor at Stanford University, California. She says a player doesn't have to be the best to get a trophy. But those who receive an award should have to work for it. She suggests trophies go to the most improved player, or the one who contributed most to the team spirit, as well as to those who play the best. “The trophy has to stand for something,” Dweck told TFK. “If we give a trophy to everyone, then the award has no value.” Dweck argues that giving kids trophies for particular reasons, such as improving in a sport, teaches kids that adults value hard work and trying our best. Others say that there's no harm in giving awards to all kids who play a sport, regardless of how they played or whether or not they improved. “I think we should encourage kids' participation in sports,” says Kenneth Barish, a psychology professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, in New York City. “A trophy is one way to encourage kids' efforts.” Barish argues that when we single_out only the best or even the most improved players with a trophy, we are teaching kids the wrong lesson. We are sending the message that winning is everything. “Winning is only part of the equation (等式) ,” Barish told TFK. “Playing sports also teaches kids about teamwork and the importance of exercise.” There will be plenty of opportunity for kids to learn about competition as they get older, says Barish. They'll soon realize that only one soccer team wins the World Cup and only one football team wins the Super Bowl. For now, he thinks there's nothing wrong with letting all kids who play a sport feel like winners. That means trophies for everyone. 28.According to Carol Dweck ,which player should receive a trophy? A.Tony, the most attractive player of the soccer team. B.David, a soccer player who is b- 配套讲稿:
