Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as photosynthesis (光合作用).Now researchers have found a way to imitate this seemingly simple process. The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip with catalysts (催化剂).Similar to natural leaves,it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell, which uses those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house. Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. “One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology,” said Nocera at a conference of the American Chemical Society. The artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and unstable for practical use. The new leaf,by contrast,is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies,Nocera showed that an artificial leaf prototype (原型) could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity. The wonderful improvements come from Nocera's recent discovery of several powerful, new and inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now,the new leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available;that is,it doesn't need pure water. This is important for some countries that don't have access to pure water. With the goal to “make each home its own power station” and “give energy to the poor”,scientists believe that the new technology could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China. 21.Which of the following orders correctly shows how the artificial leaf is used to produce electricity? a.artificial leaves split water into hydrogen and oxygen b.the hydrogen and oxygen gases are stored in a fuel cell c.the artificial leaves are put in water d.the fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity A. c,a,b,d B.c,b,a,d C.b,c,a,d D.c,a,d,b 22.The purpose of the scientists at MIT in developing the new artificial leaf is to________. A.build up more power stations in the world B.provide cheaper energy for developing countries C.offer people in developing countries access to pure water D.gain a deeper understanding of the photosynthesis process 23.The main idea of this passage is ________. A.an introduction to the history of artificial leaves B.a mixture of water power and solar energy C.giving energy to the poor D.an invention copying photosynthesis B Obama, Lady Gaga and Steve Jobs—what do they have in common? They are, of course, all Americans. And according to a survey by social networking site baidu. com, they all best illustrate(举例说明) the word “cool”. But just what does it mean to say someone is “cool”? Most would answer that it is something to do with being independent-minded and not following the crowd. Yale University art professor Robert Farris Thompson says that the term “cool” goes back to 15th century West African philosophy. “Cool” relates to ideas of grace(优雅) under pressure. “In Africa, ” he writes, “coolness is a positive quality which combines calmness, silence, and life.” The modern idea of “cool” developed largely in the US in the period after World War II. “Post-war ‘cool’ was in part an expression of war-weariness (厌战心情), . . . it went against the strict social rules of the time,” write sociologists Dick Pountain and David Robins in Cool Rules:Anatomy of an Attitude. But it was the American actor James Dean who became the symbol for “cool” in the hugely successful 1955 movie Rebel without a Cause. Dean plays a tough guy who disobeys his parents and the authorities. He always gets the girl, smokes cigarettes, wears a leather jacket and beats up bullies(欺凌弱小者). In the movie, Dean showed what “cool” would mean to American young people for the next 60 years. Today the focus of “cool” has changed to athletics (体育运动) stars. Often in movies about schools, students gain popularity on the athletics field more than in the classroom. This can be seen quite clearly in movies like Varsity Blues and John Tucker Must Die. But many teenagers also think being smart is cool. Chess and other thinking games have been becoming more popular in schools. “Call it the Harry Potterization of America—a time when being smart is the new cool,” writes journalist Joe Sunnen. 24.If you were considered “cool” in Africa in the 15th century, you ________. A. thought and acted differently from the majority B. had a calm and quiet attitude towards life C. didn’t observe rules and authorities D. had all kinds of “bad” manners 25.The heroes in Varsity Blues and John Tucker Must Die are likely to be those who ________. A. do very well in their studies B. are very skilled at sports C. are good at chess and other thinking games. D. have supernatural powers like Harry Potter 26.Which of the following is NOT true according to the article? A. It is generally considered “cool” to be independent-minded and not to follow the crowd. B. “Cool” was used as early as the 15th century. C. Disobeying one’s parents and the authorities is considered “cool” among American young people nowadays. D. Getting the first place in an exam can also be considered “cool”. 27.What does the article mainly talk about? A. The origin of the word “cool”. B. The kinds of people who are “cool”. C. The changing meaning of the word “cool”. D. How to be a “ cool” person. C A research shows that humans switch from selfish to unselfish behavior when they are watched. Do you? A picture of a set of eyes on a computer screen can cause a change in the way people act. Even images of eyes on a charity donation, collection box encourage people to be unselfish, because people put more money in a collection box that has a picture of eyes on it than they do when a flower symbol is on the box. Manfred Milinski from the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany and Bettina Rockenbach of the University of Berlin, the authors of a new study, found that people act better when they are being watched because they feel they will be rewarded for good behavior. Their report also referred to other research showing that this response of behaving well when watched is somehow coded into humans and people respond this way unconsciously, or without realizing it. It is not just humans that act unselfishly when they are being watched. A fish called the grooming fish cleans other fish. When other fish are around, it is gentler. When no other fish are around, however, the grooming fish bites chunks from the fish it is supposed to be cleaning. The researchers suggest that the best way to get people to behave in the correct way is to make them feel watched. This could be the reason for the success of a famous American army poster. On it was a picture of an elderly man staring fiercely and pointing, it appeared, to the person who was looking at the poster. Under the picture was the caption 'I Want You'. It encouraged hundreds of thousands of young American men to join the army during the Second World War to fight the Germans and Japanese. 28.According to the report, why does a person behave better when he feels he is being watched? A.He does not want to be shamed by others. B.He needs to show he is a good person. C.He desires others to like him more. D.He feels he will receive some social reward. 29.What is the text mainly about? A.It describes changed behavior when observed. B.It details ways to control people's behavior. C.It tells how to make people work harder. D.It discusses different advertising methods. 30.According to the text, which of the following statements is true? A.People pretend to behave worse when they are watched. B.Fish bite other fish in a fish tank when they are alone. C.People donate more money when they feel they are watched. D.Soldiers fought better during World War II because of a poster. 31.The underlined word “coded” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _____ A. hidden B. programmed C. forgotten D. learnt D "The days when the management in Western companies presented gold watches to long-serving employees to thank them for loyal service is now just a memory." says the Educational and Training Support Agency. This new development in the shape and movement of the workforce throughout Western businesses is partly a result of the way that layers of middle management are being removed, leaving more workers responsible for their own development. "Having workers take responsibility for their own development might be dramatic, but it is now the rule," says the Educational and Training Support Agency. "Today, not only are workers more mobile, they have to run to keep up with changes." says the Government- founded agency."It is no longer enough for a worker to gain a set of skills.Workers need the ability to react and get used to changes." This new system is also being pushed along by the way that industry is looking to its workers to renew their own skills. In the United States, some companies have contracts (合同) which repair their employees to show regularly how they have their skills up to date. Contrary to this traditions of the past, employers in the West are now looking for autonomous(独立自主的) learners as recruits, people who can develop their own continuing education beyond the school and university system. At the same time, businesses are developing the capacity for workers to take up autonomous learning on site in workplace, so that the skills and abilities of all workers in a business continue to improve and increase."This,of course," says business theory."will also improve the productivity of the workers and therefore the profits of the company." 32.The management in western companies no longer presents gold watches to their employees because _____. A.they are not loyal to companies B.other rewards replace gold watches C.the way prove to be a failure D.serving a company for life is rare now 33.The western workforce frequently changes their jobs partly because _____. A.hopping from job to job has become a new trend B.employees are expecting to have more experiences in their life C.workers have to take more responsibility for themselves D.it is easy to complete themselves by doing so 34.The passage seems to suggest that the present situation in society requires that workers should__________. A.show more loyalty to their companies B.try to develop their skills to fit in with changes C.go to college to have their skills up to date D.be quick in changing their careers if there is the possibility 35.Companies require their employee's development mainly because _____. A.it will finally help to bring more profits to the company B.it can attract more workers who pay special attention to self-development C.it is good for the employees to develop their skills D.it will make workers more responsible and loyal to the company 其次- 配套讲稿:
