Wildlife watching also creates satisfying memories. We have seen hundreds of the elk and bighorn sheep that attract visitors, yet they still arouse a sense of wonder. One such experiment took place in South America about fifty years ago. Whether its final consequences will cause serious damage or nothing more than a small trouble still remains to be seen. The story began in 1956 when an American scientist working in Brazil decided to solve the problem of increasing the productivity of that country's bees. He imported a very active type of African bee from Tanzania and mated (交配) it with the more easy-going native variety to produce a new kind of bees. The new bees worked harder and produced twice as much honey. It seemed that Professor Kerr, for that was the scientist's name, had a total success on his hands. Then things began to go wrong. For some reason as yet unseen, but perhaps as a result of something in their environment, the new bees began to develop extremely attacking personalities. They became bad-tempered and easy to be angry, attacked the native bees and drove them from their living places. But worse was to follow. Having taken over the countryside, the new bees, with their dangerous stings (叮) , began to attack its neighbours -- cats, dogs, horses, chickens and finally man himself. A long period of terror began that has so far killed a great number of animals and about 150 human beings. This would have been bad enough if the bees had stayed in Brazil. But now they are on the move, heading northwards in countless millions towards Central and North America, and moving at the alarming speed of 200 miles a year. The countries that lie in their path are naturally worried because it looks as if nothing can be done to stop them. 24. The results of the South American experiment . A. have caused a serious trouble B. have proved to be wrong C. are not yet certain D. are not important 25. The experiment mentioned in this passage was designed to . A. increase the amount of honey in Brazil B. make Brazilian bees more easy-going C. increase the number of bees in Brazil D. make African bees less active 26. Which of the following may be the cause of the new bees' attacking personalities? A. Their production of honey. B. Their hard work. C. Their living environment. D. Their bad temper. 27. The last paragraph implies that . A. the bees have been driven to Central and North America B. the bees may bring about trouble in more countries C. the bees must be stopped from moving north D. the bees prefer to live in Brazil (C) I prefer Lynne Truss’s phraseology(措词): I am a grammar “sticker”. And, like Truss – author of Eats, shoots & Leaves – I have a “zero tolerance” approach to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid. Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have “zero tolerance”. She thinks that people who mix up basic grammar “deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked (砍) up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave”, while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job – even if they are otherwise qualified for the position. Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a compulsory grammar test. If job hopefuls can’t distinguish between “to” and “too”, their applications go into the bin. Of course, we write for a living. iF is the world’s largest online repair manual (指南), and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation(证明文件), like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. So, it makes sense that we’ve made a strong strike against grammar errors. But grammar is relevant for all companies. Yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimportant. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the Internet. And, for better or worse, people judge you if you can’t tell the difference between “their” “there” and “they’re”. Good grammar makes good business sense – and not just when it comes to hiring writers. Writing isn’t in the official job description of most people in our office. Still, we give our grammar test to everybody, including our salespeople, our operations staff, and our programmers. Grammar signifies more than just a person’s ability to remember high school English. I’ve found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing – like stocking shelves or labeling parts. It is the same with programmers. Applicants who don’t think writing is important are likely to think lots of other things also aren’t important. 28. The author agrees with Lynne Truss in that ________. A. grammar mistakes can’t be tolerated B. books on grammar make people stupid C. people need to learn basic grammar D. grammar mistakes are absolutely unavoidable 29. What’s the author’s “zero tolerance” approach to these job seekers who mix up basic grammar? A. They should be left out for a job. B. They have to correct their mistakes. C. They aren’t qualified for their jobs. D. They must be severely punished. 30. Which of the following is TRUE of iFixit and Dozuki? A. Only one of them has a compulsory grammar test. B. They are companies where one learns grammar. C. Grammar is quite important for their existence. D. They depend on grammar correction for a living. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Have you ever noticed that the more you have the more you want? Let's face it. Thinking our life is good enough doesn't come naturally to many people. When we have high expectations of everything in life, we will run into disappointment. Only when we are aware(意识到) that needs are different from desires(欲望) can we live with satisfaction. 31 . 32 Most people want things to be better than they are, or when things are going well, we forget to appreciate what we have. Learn to reflect on how much better things are than they could be. Write down 5 things you are grateful for right now. When we hold onto regrets from decisions we have made, it can really poison our well-being(健康、幸福). Many people regret something they can no longer change, which ends up holding them back from moving forward in a more positive manner. 33 ,so work to stay present and be mindful of the current moment to find more joy and fulfillment(满足感). When we use other people as the measuring stick for our personal success and quality of life, we are likely to be less satisfied. Social comparisons can provide useful information when we try to learn from others, but they also hold our perspective(角度、观点) in a discontented position. 34 . When you focus on your big ambitions and future goals, you might neglect the daily pleasures that surround you. 35 . Stay present and focus on the task you're undertaking at the moment. Don't let the life pass you by because you're always on the go and distracted by ambitions. Practice looking at life through the lens(镜头) of contentment and it will become more natural. A.
