Telling riddles will make your family laugh and sometimes even scratch their heads, trying to figure out what the answer is. Riddles have been a pastime for centuries. Not only have riddles been something for passing the time, but they have also been used to pass on secret information during the Second World War. Even the ancient Greeks used riddles. They would tell riddles at parties and whoever was the first to get them right would receive prize. Most riddles use words that have double meanings or share the same sound like “hear” and “here”. So in order to get the riddle, you will have to do some creative thinking and think of all the possibilities of different words. The difficulty of figuring out the riddle is based on the riddle itself. The riddle has to provide you with enough clues to come to the right answer, but that doesn’t mean that the clues have to be easy. If you are looking to tell riddles but don’t know any, you can look online and you will find a large number of sites that will have hundreds of different riddles to choose from. If you would like to look somewhere else then you could look at your local bookstore, where you will be able to find many different books with thousands of riddles to choose from. You can even find websites and books that will tell you how to write your own riddles. After you have found some resources that have different riddles, you will need to read through them to find the right ones for you and your family: You will also need to make sure that your kids will have a chance to figure out the answers. So take your time and choose the fight family riddles to tell. 9.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text? A. To recommend an interesting family activity. B. A. one way B. two ways C. three ways D. four ways D Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior. One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study. They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner’s Dilemma. The game is based on the tension (紧急气氛) between the interests (利益) of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the punisher. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings were. The group with the most punishment earned twenty-five percent less than the group with the least punishment. The study appeared last month in the journal Science. The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not. The study says the IQs--or intelligence quotients--of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points. Murray Strauss from the University of New Hampshire worked with Mallie Paschall from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation. Professor Strauss has written extensively about physical punishment of children. He says the more they are spanked, the slower their mental development. He also looked at average IQs in other nations and found them lower where spanking was more common. 13.Which could be the best title of the passage? A. Punishment B. The Best Way to Influence Behavior. C. Punishment or Reward: Which Works Better on Behavior? D. Two Recent Studies. 14.The underlined word “spanked” probably means______. A. won B. punished C. tested D. praised 15.According to the passage, the researchers may agree the best way to influence behavior is______. A. rewarding good behavior B. correcting bad behavior C. punishing badly-behaved children D. praising well-behaved children 其次节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? 16 We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. 17 Mental exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. 18 If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent. 19 According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “ 20 ” A. A healthy body contributes to one's intelligence. B. Parents should also be careful about what they say to young children. C. What people want to express is like this. D. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. E. It needs exercise. F. You are such a smart child. G.
