I spent several nights lying in bed, thinking about what to say. Many things crossed my mind, but none of them involved all my classmates. Then one night, it hit me. Erwin High School has the highest dropout rate of any high school in our county. What better goal could we have than for every single one of us to graduate? What if I could get my class to become the first class in the history of our public school system to enter high school as freshmen and all graduate? Wouldn’t that be awesome?
The day before, we spent several hours sitting at the desks, thinking about what to do. Many things crossed our minds, but none of them involved all my classmates. Then it hit me that the elderly people in the nursing home are lonely and need care. Wouldn’t that be awesome if we could do something for them? Much to my happiness, we all thought it a great idea.

The speech I gave on graduation day was only 12 minutes long, but what it started is unbelievable. When I issued the challenge to my classmates to become the first class in history to enter high school as freshmen and all graduate, the entire audience, including the parents, grandparents and teachers, erupted in applause. As I showed the personalized certificates and signs each student would get, I could tell they were really enthused. At the end of my speech the whole audience jumped to its feet with a standing ovation. It was all I could do to keep my composure and not break down and cry. I’d had no idea my challenge would bring this kind of response.

When our performance started, the elderly erupted in applause. We sang and danced with enthusiasm on the stage, and they were completely immersed in the happy and light-hearted atmosphere. At the end of the performance, they even jumped to their feet with a standing ovation.

December 5th is National Volunteer Day, as for Chinese we have March 5th as a volunteer day to commemorate our immortal hero Lei Feng. To study from his spirit, we planned an aid activity at a senior citizens home, which had been carefully arranged by each of us on March 5th.
Finally the big day came. We set out early with the sun shining in the sky, wind slipping by our side, and everything seemed so nice. Upon arrival, we greeted the elderly and started our cleaning work. Some of us swept and mopped the floor, while others cleaned windows and tidied the rooms. Being well-organized and earnest, we soon got everything done.
After that, we taught some of those affable elderly people basic English words and several simple sentences. The granny I taught was really a quick learner, and apparently, we had a great time together. Also, we put on performances, and thanked to the effort of everybody, warm applause was given and we all felt satisfied.
Time flew. Soon it was the time to wave goodbye. We all had lots of fun and we gained a lot from what we did. Love and care are always the best gift to other people. And it is not how it comes, but what it contains that builds up the relationship between two men, no matter if you have ever met. It’s the deduction spirt and humanity that break the barrier of age, gender or territory.

On arriving there, we rushed in. We just couldn’t wait to do something for the elderly. We helped them do some housework. We swept the floor and cleaned the windows. With our work finished, the room looked tidy and delightful.
After a short break, we performed for the elderly. It made them laugh again and again – maybe because of our poor performing skills. After all, it was amused.
You know what? After the performance, some of the elderly even wanted my classmates and me to teach them English! They were so admirable, weren’t they?
The time passing, we had to say goodbye to them. I thought that the elderly were lonely and helpless. It was not for duty, but for kindness, that we should help them and help other people who need help.

The Lei Feng Day was coming soon, so my classmates and I wanted to do something. After a heated discussion, we decided to help the elderly who lived in the senior citizens home.
On the Lei Feng Day, hardly had we got there than we got down to doing some cleaning as planned. Girls were responsible for cleaning windows while boy took charge of sweeping the floor. Despite our tiredness, we worked in high spirits.
After the cleaning, we were divided into two groups. Each group performed a different task. One gave the elderly people a fantastic performance in the hall and the other were asked to teach the elderly some daily English expressions when they saw broad smiles appear on their faces, happiness and achievement filed their hearts.
Happy time always passes quickly. When we left the senior citizens hoe, all the elderly people said goodbye to us. Although we felt tired, we thought it worthwhile.

We had to say goodbye before much time. That meaningful volunteering experience has shown me that I can bring joy and warmth to the elderly. It made me a more caring person.
