Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares. Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly erase(抹去),the effect of painful memories. In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased. The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a had idea, While others support it.Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories. “Some memories can ruin people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,”said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.“This could relieve a lot of that suffering.” But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity(特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of past. “All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out,”said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist. 1. The passage is mainly about          . A. a new medical invention B. a way of erasing painful memories C. a new research on the pill D. an argument about the research on the pill 2. We can infer from the passage that       . A. taking the pill will do harm to people's health B. people doubt the effects of the pills C. the pill will stop people's bad experiences D. the pill has probably been produced in America 3. The drug tested on people can         . A. cause the brain to fix memories B. stop people remembering bad experiences C. prevent body producing certain chemicals D. wipe out the emotional effects of memories 4. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with? A. Some memories can ruin people's lives. B. People want to get rid of bad memories. C. Experiencing bad events makes us different from others. D. The pill will reduce people's sufferings from bad memories. B Smoking is harmful. But as soon as you quit the habit, everything will be OK, right? Wrong. New research has found that even if you give up smoking, the damage it has done to your genes (基因) will stay there for a much longer time. In the research, a team of US scientists studied the blood of 16,000 people. Among them, some were smokers, some used to smoke, and the rest were non-smokers. Scientists compared their genes and found that more than 7,000 genes of smokers had changed-a number that is one-third of known human genes. According to NBC News, both heart disease and cancer are caused by genetic changes. Some people may have had the changes when they were born, but most people get them in their day-to-day lives while doing things like smoking. When you stop smoking, a lot of these genes will return to normal within five years. This means your body is trying to heal (治愈) itself of the harmful effects of smoking. But the changes in some of the genes stay for longer. They can stay for as long as 30 years, It’s almost like leaving a footprint on wet cement (水泥) 一it will always be there, even when you’ve walked away and when the cement becomes dry. Although the study results may make people unhappy, there is a bright side: the findings could help scientists invent medicine to treat genetic damage caused by smoking or find ways to tell which people have heart disease or cancer risks. 5. The function of Paragraph 1 is to         . A. give an example            B. make an argument       C. introduce the topic of the passage   D. show the main idea of the passage 6. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 6 refers to         . A. the cement     B. the footprint C. the harmful effect          D. the genetic change 7. Most genetic changes happen because of         . A. people’s condition at birth               B. environmental pollution C. people’s bad living habits                D. heart disease and cancer 8. Which of the following statements is true? A. The findings are the fruit of more than three years’ research. B. The findings have prevented more people from starting smoking C. The findings offer evidence that a damaged gene can heal itself. D. The findings help to find cures for genetic damage caused by smoking. 二、七选五(每题2分,共10分) Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit—and that can be a very annoying thing. 9  Read on for some techniques worth trying. 1. 10   People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer's disease (早老性痴呆症), according to a recent study.    11  Something as simple as setting a goal to havea weekly coffee date with a friend will do. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward. 2. Go for a walk. Mildly raised glucose (葡萄糖) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain.    12 3. Learn something new. Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play cards. A study found that mental stimulation (刺激) limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time.   13 . A. Luckily, research shows there is a lot you can do to avoid those moments. B. So take a few minutes each day to do some reading. C. It should be something like learning gardening or go dancing with your friends. D. This can be especially harmful to the aged. E. But don't worry if your schedule isn't filled with life-changing events.F. Focus on the future. G. In other words, when you take care of your body, you take care of your brain. 五、短文改错(每题1分,共10分) There was a time when I was disappointing and helpless. It seemed that I was left behind in school. In addition to, I was facing with many obstacles to study. Fortunately, I read book about gratitude and life. It told many stories about a man overcome difficulties. In the book, a sentence moved me deep: when God closes a door, somewhere she opens a window. The sentence gave me power and confident. Before long I learn to taste the joy of life through reading, that really changed my attitude to life.
