These public media receive money to operate from private citizens, organizations and government. Many of their programs are educational. But most of the American media are run by businesses for profit. These privately owned media have changed greatly in recent years. Newspapers, magazines and traditional broadcast television organizations have lost some of their popularity. At the same time, online, cable and satellite media have increased in numbers and strength. So have media that serve racial groups and those communicating in foreign languages. In general, more media than ever now provide Americans with news and entertainment. At the same time, fewer owners control them. Huge companies have many holdings(股份). In some areas, one company controls much of the media. One dramatic change in American media is the increased success of cable television. It comes into most homes over wires. It does not use the public airwaves to present programs, as broadcast television does. Like broadcast television, most cable television programs perform advertisements. This is true although people must pay to see cable television in their homes. Thirty years ago, few people had cable. Today, about sixty-eight percent of American homes have cable television. Television by satellite also is gaining popularity. Over the years, traditional broadcast organizations have tried to appeal to as many watchers as possible. Many cable companies, however, present programs for one special group of viewers. For example, there are cable stations for people who like books, cooking, travel, golf or comedy. 【小题1】Which of the following is true about American public media? A.They depend on the government. B.They are controlled by the government C.They are free D.They can earn money. 【小题2】Which of the following properly shows the change in these privately owned media? A.Newspapers are getting more popular. B.Satellite media is getting more popular. C.Traditional media also serve racial groups. D.Some media make their programs in foreign languages 【小题3】From the second paragraph, we learn that . A.broadcast TV and cable TV programs include sales messages B.more media are out of control C.American media is dramatic D.cable TV is free 【小题4】What would be the best title for the text? A.American news and entertainment B.Public television and radio media C.media in the United States D.Cable programs in the United States 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。 【2014高考英语模拟考试】 With the development of society, the choice of food and drinks for children is more diversified than ever before. However, every coin has two sides. Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the statistics. I feel there are a number of reasons for this. Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants then probably children would buy less take-away food. There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree to this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives. There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports. The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as guiding them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits. 50. What is suggested by the author to deal with “overweight”? A. Blaming the shops selling unhealthy and fatty foods. B. Asking young children to walk to school every day. C. Living an active life and removing bad eating habits. D. Not watching TV or playing computer games after school. 51. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text? 52. The author writes the passage to ______________ A. show people a social problem B. provide facts for government C. advise solutions to a problem D. compare opinions with people 53. The underlined word “diversified” in the first paragraph most probably means ________. A. various B. difficult C. expensive D. available 2016高考英语阅读理解--政治经济文化类 While working in Southeast Asia in the mid 1990’s, I became a branch manager in a factory. At the beginning, I used human relations principles, such as putting myself into the others place to help gain trust. After a few months, I was told that the factory team members liked and trusted me. Then the owner, seeing how everyone thought well of me, believed that I could become an instrument of change to carry out his several unpopular programs. The factory members resisted and eventually saw me as a puppet controlled by the owner. The more I insisted that they ‘follow orders’ the more they found ways to weaken the new changes. Finally, I was replaced by a manager who knew enough to please both masters. Even though the owner did not like the fact that his new changes were not immediately applied, the new manager gained his power by the support received from his team together with an intention to find a way. What I learned was that your team must always see you as supportive of their needs, even to the extent that the owner may not be pleased that you are unable to follow their wishes. At the end of the day, if your people do not follow you then you are no longer in charge and will be replaced. At first I blamed my boss for putting me in such a position. Then in honest reflection, I began to realize that he had probably hoped that I would have found some middle ground. What I could have done was to first obtain their advice about why they did not wish to follow the new policy changes, and then I should have used my influence with both the owner and team members to find a better way. Though, in fact it is a painful lesson for me, it has served me well along my career path! 【小题1】What can we learn from the passage? A.Obeying is the best quality. B.Giving is always a pleasure. C.Appreciating others will benefit a lot. D.Dealing with relationship is important. 【小题2】The underlined word “puppet” has the similar meaning to . A.instrument B.assistant C.wretch D.winner 【小题3】Which is the right order according to the passage? a. He was removed from his position. b. He got on poorly with the coworkers. c. He carried out the orders of the owner. d. He became a branch manager. f. He was believed in not only by coworkers but leaders. A.a, b, d, c, f B.f, d, c, b, a C.d, f, c, b, a D.d, c, f, b, a 【小题4】From the third paragraph we can infer that . A.the new manager carried out the programs at once B.the new manager got on badly with workers C.workers need to be recognized and supported D.you should make full use of your power 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow. The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created:the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice. You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial(长期的) victims and martyrs(殉道者). They are leaves tossed(摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather. You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible. Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence. If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks. In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success. 51. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they ______. A. are ready to change their minds B. can’t exercise control over themselves C. don’t have the power to face their fate D. are easily affected by windy weather 52. Losers would think that ______. A. success is the result of hard work B. their failure is only because of bad luck C. working hard will lead to success D. they don’t make efforts to succeed 53. It can be inferred from paragraph 5 that ______. A. setting our expectations is essential before taking action B. developing confidence is the key to future success C. thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind D. whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes 54. The last paragraph serves as ______. A. the proof of the author’s points B. an introduction to another topic C. the conclusion of the argument D. a comparison between two views 55. Which is the best title for the text? A. Develop our confidence. B. The secrets of success. C. Success is a choice. D. How to achieve success. 【参考答案】51—55 BBDCC 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡 上将该项涂黑。 My son David, who was 3.5 years old, taught me a beautiful lesson today. After we finished playing with the beads (珠子) , David slowly picked up each bead, looking at it as if it were made of chocolate and then put it into the box they were stored in. With over a hundred beads to go, I was getting impatient. "Why could he not pick up 10 in one go and put them in? My morning was going to be ruined today!" But then it hit me like a brick. I noticed that he did this with as much interest as he had while we were playing. The boy was enjoying the whole process. For him the fun was in the game itself as well as in the process of properly packing up and cleaning up. It was not just about his turn or the fun part. Every bit was as fun as the other. I thought of myself as a kid when we would go out to play cricket (板球). If I was not batting or bowling (击球或掷球), I was unhappy as I impatiently waited for my turn to do so. As a result, I was unhappy while waiting for my turn and only happy for the few moments I either batted or bowled. Only the process of doing something I combined with happiness made me cheerful. The rest of the time I was waiting for my rum in the future or recalling great bowling from the past. Looking at how peacefully my son was putting beads into the box taught me that the process is the goal. The joy of journey is not in getting there but in every step of it. 1. Why was the father getting upset? A. He wasn't interested in the game. B. His son didn't do it as he was told to. C. It'd take long to put away the beads. D. David put away the beads casually. 2. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean? A. I was hit by David with a brick. B. I felt very annoyed at what David did. C. I was at a loss what to do with David. D. I suddenly understood David's behavior. 3. We can learn from the text that the author _____. A. felt satisfied with his teammates B. happily watched his teammates play C. was eager to join in the game D. thought it a pleasure to win a match 4. What did the author learn from this experience? A. Happiness resulted from doing something pleasant. B. The process was more important than the result. C. It was important for children to develop good habits. D. What children thought was different from that of adults.
