But Sophia knew just how important Make-A-Wish could be because this special organization had helped to make a dream come true for one of her best friends. We were interested in finding out more, so we went along to meet Sophia and listen to what she had to say. Sophia told us that Make-A-Wish is a worldwide organization that started in the United States in 1980. “It’s a charity that helps children who have got very serious illnesses. Make-A-Wish helps children feel happy even though they are sick, by making their wishes and dreams come true,” Sophia explained. We asked Sophia how Make-A-Wish had first started. She said it had all begun with a very sick young boy called Chris, who had been dreaming for a long time of becoming a policeman. Sophia said lots of people had wanted to find a way to make Chris’s dream come true ----so, with everybody’s help, Chris, only seven years old at the time, had been a “policeman” for a day. “When people saw how delighted Chris was when his dream came true, they decided to try and help other sick children too, and that was the beginning of Make-A-Wish,” explained Sophia. Sophia also told us the Foundation tries to give children and their families a special, happy time. A Make-A-Wish volunteer visits the families and asks the children what they would wish for if they could have anything in the world. Sophia said the volunteers were important because they were the ones who helped to make the wishes come true. They do this either by providing things that are necessary, or by raising money or helping out in whatever they can. 1. Sophia found out about Make-A-Wish because her best friend had__________. A.He has been a policeman since he was seven. B.He wanted people to help make his dream come true. C.He gave people the idea of starting Make-A-Wish. D.He was the first child Make-A-Wish helped after it had been set up. 4.Which of the following is true about Make-A-Wish volunteers? A.They try to help children get over their illness. B.They visit sick children to make them feel special. C.They provide what is necessary to make Make-A-Wish popular. D.They are important for making wishes come true. B In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more strategies. One strategy involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food later in their trip. In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics(化妆品) section. While the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later. Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wine went up. When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding strategies. They find that customers make decision in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses. 5.Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section? A.To save customers time. B.To help sell junk food. C.To show they are high quality foods. D.To sell them at discount prices. 6.According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy? A.Opening the store early in the morning. B.Displaying British wines next to French ones. C.Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread. D.Inviting customers to play music. 7.What is the California builder’s story intended to prove? A.The house structure is a key factor customers consider. B.The more costly the house is, the better it sells. C.A good first impression increases sales. D.An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste. 8.What is the main purpose of the passage? A.To introduce how businesses have grown from the past. B.To explain how businesses turn people into their customers. C.To report researches on customer behavior. D.To show dishonest business practices. C Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we still remember it. In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables (乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forgot rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood. The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击准备) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s further development. 9.The author explains the law of overlearning by . A.setting down general rules B.making a comparison C.using examples D.presenting research findings 10.According to the author, being able to use multiplication table is . A. a special case of cramming B.a result of overlearning C. a skill to deal with math problems D.a basic step towards advanced studies 11.What does the word “they” in paragraph 4 refer to? A.The multiplication tables B.Commonly accepted rules C.Things easily forgotten D.School subjects 12. What’s the author’s opinion on cramming? A.It leads to failure in college exams. B.It’s possible to result in poor memory. C.It increases student’s learning interest. D.It’s helpful only in a limited way. D Choose Your One-Day Tours!
