This has been the first obvious increase since 2001. American schools last fall had 583,000 foreign students. The record is 586,000. That was set in 2002 after many years of gains. But after that the numbers fell. The terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001 led to more visa (签证) requirements. Now stronger efforts are being made to get more foreign students to study in the United States. China remained in second place in front of South Korea but behind India, which sent almost 84,000 students last fall. The number of Japanese fell sharply by nine percent, although it remained in fourth place. There were three percent drops from Indonesia and Kenya, the only African country in the top twenty last year. But there were obvious increases from Saudi Arabia, Nepal and Vietnam. The number of Saudi students more than doubled, rising to nearly eight thousand. For a sixth year, the University of Southern California in Los Angeles had the most foreign students. Columbia University in New York was second. Other schools in the top five were New York University, the University of Illinois and Purdue University. Unlike American students in other countries, who often choose history and language study, the leading area of study in the USA was business and management. Second was engineering. The new report also says more than 220,000 Americans studied in other countries. That was during the 2005-2006 school year. It was a record number, and an increase of eight and a half percent from the year before. But only five percent of them stayed for a full year. 1. After 2002, the number of foreign students in the USA fell mainly because ________. A. Americans were worried that foreign students might attack them B. few American universities welcomed students from abroad C. their own countries could offer them a better education D. it was harder for foreign students to get permission to study in the USA 2. Which of the following Asian countries has the largest number of students studying in the USA? A. China. B. Japan. C. India. D. South Korea. 3. Of the following subjects, which is the most attractive to foreign students in the USA? A. History. B. Business and management. C. Engineering. D. Language. 4. We can learn from the passage that _______. A. Kenya is the only African country that has students in the USA B. now foreign students are encouraged to study in the USA C. the number of students studying in America always increases D. the number of foreign students in the USA will keep increasing in the future 5. In which section of a newspaper could you most probably read this passage? A. Culture. B. Science. C. Education. D. Business. B These days we mostly hear news about animals being endangered (濒临灭绝的). So a conservation (保护) success story is certainly one to celebrate. Researchers have recently noted that Californian Blue Whales have been making a comeback! Blue whales are the largest animals ever to have lived on the earth. They have been on the list of endangered animals for a while now. Humans hunted blue whales more than 100 years ago, and the animals almost die out. It is only recently that some of their cousins are returning. It has been found that there are now about 2,200 Californian Blue Whales today — nearly 97% of the original (原先的) population, before humans started whaling. Blue whales can live up to about 80 to 90 years. They are also one of the loudest animals on the earth. They make noises that other whales can hear, up to 100 miles away. They spend winters in warm waters to give birth and travel to the Arctic (北极的) seas during summer in search of food. Long ago, blue whales used to be plentiful in the oceans and numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Now, there are only 10,000 to 25,000 of them worldwide. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, people would hunt whales for their organs (器官). Japan and Russia were among the best-known whaling nations. They hunted whales for food, clothing and other valuable products. Over-hunting caused the whale population to become smaller. Conservation efforts of the last few years have certainly paid off. These include efforts to stop catches and increased monitoring of whales' living places. Saving blue whales cannot be a local effort; it will need everybody around the world to come together. 6. Recently, Californian Blue Whales _____. A. are increasing in number B. are becoming endangered C. are being hunted by the locals D. are a lot thinner than other whales 7. Paragraph 4 is mainly about _____. A. the history of whaling B. the value of blue whales C. the difficulties of hunting blue whales D. the reason why blue whales became endangered 8. Conservation work on whales in the past few years can best be described as _____. A. easy B. interesting C. successful D. late C One day at The Dubai Mall, a workmate (同事) warned that a sandstorm (沙尘暴) was going on. I didn't know what a sandstorm looked like and I told him I wanted to go out just to see it for myself. I received a strange look because he thought I was crazy to even want to see a sandstorm. I decided to go to the bus stop to ride a number 29 bus that would take me home to Bur Dubai. Another workmate joined me as he was heading to the same street as I was. We stepped off The Dubai Mall with our eyes half-closed because we were afraid that the sand would harm our eyes. We also covered our faces in order to protect ourselves from the sandstorm. I got into the bus and felt safe for the next half hour. It took almost an hour to reach Bur Dubai from The Dubai Mall, and after getting off at the Burjuman bus stop, I could see rubbish here and there. I passed through several streets to reach the apartment building and I still couldn't bear to keep my eyes wide open. It was pretty dangerous knowing that there were cars on the road and it was already dark. I went inside a shop and bought some food for dinner. I could see sand on the floor of the shop. But I was happy that the storm stopped afterwards. When I got out of the shop, I could still see rubbish on the streets, but at least the wind wasn't strong anymore. This was the first time I'd ever been in a sandstorm in Dubai and I don't ever want to be in one again. 9. The author stayed in Dubai _____. A. to study there B. to work there C. to go shopping D. to take a vacation 10. When the author got out of The Dubai Mall, he _____. A. covered his face B. saw the dirty streets C. got in a taxi right away D. left his workmate behind 11. The sandstorm came to an end probably when the author _____. A. got off at the Burjuman bus stop B. left home in Bur Dubai C. left The Dubai Mall D. got out of the shop 12. How does the author feel about his sandstorm experience? A. Calm. B. Excited. C. Frightened. D. Painful. D Make sure you don’t miss Australia’s largest and most exciting kite-flying festival this year, which promises to be a great day out for the whole family. The skies will come alive with hundreds of kites of all shapes and sizes from local and international kite makers and fliers. It’s not just the experts who can fly their kites — come down and fly your own. If you don’t have a kite, you can buy one from one of the stalls in the park, or better still, make one at one of our kite-making workshops. Then there’s the multicultural entertainment program in the Pavilion Courtyard Amphitheatre of great music, dance and performance. The headline act this year is Rastawookie. Their music is a fusion (结合) of many different styles from South America, the Caribbean and western countries. There will also be free music and dance workshops, so why not try your hand at one of these? For the children there will be additional rides, face painting, jugglers (变戏法者), stilt walkers, and clowns. After all these activities, you probably can’t wait to eat. Choose from one of our fabulous multicultural food stalls offering food and drinks from all over the world or for something simpler — nothing could be better than a good old-fashioned sausage! There’s so much to do and so much to see, so if you’re up for a great day, then the only place to be on Sunday, September 9th is down at Bondi Beach for Sydney’s most exciting, fun and family-friendly festival. 13. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. The kite-flying festival is the largest festival in the world. B. The majority of visitors are people out of Australia. C.
