I looked around and saw only one style of living. It’s not fair, I thought. Young people have so many styles to choose from, but older people have just one choice. So I decide to do something about it , something practical. I worked on my fitness by joining exercise classes in town. A few years later, my husband and I moved to a retirement community, and I wanted to teach aerobic classes. The community center wouldn’t give me a room to teach in, so I had to walk around and find any available empty room. One day, the community center staff came to me and asked if I would help with the entertainment for a Hawaiian luau(夏威夷式宴会)they were putting on. I said yes. Then I talked five other ladies into dancing with me. We performed the hula and a war chant and brought the house down. Someone had a camera and took pictures, and then sent them to our local paper. We got requests for more engagements, which in turn led to more publicity and yet more engagements. Soon we had invitations from all over the country. The Dancing Grannies were born! I think the real secret of the Dancing Grannies is out attitude. I was raised extremely poor ---no-food poor. If we wanted toys we had to make things up to play with ,so I learned early to be very creative. And you know, I think being poor was one of the best things that ever happened to me because I learned to look for treasures. That’s what I’m still doing today—looking for the treasure in growing old. I’m getting better and better. It’s true that antiques have to be treated a bit differently, with a little care, but they still have a beauty of their own. 21. What is the writer’s purpose of joining exercise classes in town? A. To change old people’s boring life. B. To make preparations for her aerobics classes. C. To keep fit by doing some exercise. D. To volunteer for the retirement community. 22. What quality did the writer develop in her poor childhood? A. Determination B. Creativity. C. Devotion D. Diligence 23. What does the underlined word “antiques” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Ancient treasures. B. Poor children. C. Harmonious communities. D. Older people. B Think necessity is the mother of invention? Not always. There is a very thin line between brilliant innovation and absolute failure, as some of the inventors famously found out. Some of the most popular products we use today were accidents by scientists--cooks who spilled things, and misguided inventors who--in the case of the glue used on Post-it notes--were trying to create the opposite of what they ended up with. But we can all take comfort in knowing even some huge mistakes can come with great ideas. And sometimes, even forgetting to wash your hands has its advantages. You know how when you're done with a Post-it note, you throw it in the wastebasket? Yeah, that was pretty much what Spencer Silver almost did when he was trying to develop a super strong adhesive(胶黏剂) for 3M labs in 1968 and failed to find any wise way. Instead, he had invented the opposite: an adhesive that stuck to objects but could be easily lifted off. Silver marketed the possible uses of his new, sort-of-weak glue around 3M for years, all to deaf ears. Finally, a colleague named Art Fry attended one of Silver's seminars(研讨会) in 1974 (3M has long been known for encouraging employees to step outside of their own departments to see what people in other areas of the company are doing). Fry saw a use where no one else did: holding his page in his book, which his bookmarks kept falling out of. And when he added Silver's mild adhesive to paper bookmarks, a first Post-it note was born. Not to let you think this is just silly company legend, even the Web fact-checker S gave this a "True" rating. 3M finally agreed to distribute the Post-it Notes nationwide in 1980, a decade after Silver had first happened to find the use. Thirty years later, they'd be as important to the American office as the stapler(订书机) and the fax machine. 24. Spencer Silver invented Post-it notes when he______. A. worked with misguided inventors B. tried to develop a super strong adhesive C. his hands got stuck in the glue D. did market research with his colleagues 25. When Silver tried to market his new invention to 3M company,______. A. no one showed interest in his product B. it proved to be not effective enough C. he could not meet the great demand D. a colleague tried it out as bookmarks 26. It can be inferred from the passage that______. A. it took Silver nearly ten years to invent his Post-it notes B. Silver invented Post-it notes with the help of his colleague C. employees in 3M are encouraged to work in other departments D. Silver’s invention got the company’s recognition ten years later 27. The passage mainly tells us______. A. necessity is the mother of invention B. a wonderful invention made by mistake C. failure is the mother of success D. great inventions come from inspiration C ◆Recognizing the need to honor achievements that didn’t fit into fixed categories, the Academy presented two special awards at the very first ceremony in 1929: one to Warner Bros for producing the pioneering talking picture The Jazz Singer, and one to Charles Chaplin for producing, directing, writing and starring in The Circus. ◆Shirley Temple, a five-year-old kid, was the youngest person ever to receive the Oscar Award (an honorary one), in 1934. ◆The youngest actress to win the standard Oscar (not honorary) was 10-year-old Tatum O’Neal. This Grand Slam has been won by — It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). ◆The three movies that have won 11 Oscars in a single ceremony, in different categories, are — Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). 28. A. the first black performer who won an Academy Award B. the film producer who received the most Academy Awards C. an actress who delivered the longest acceptance speech D. a film director who ever won the Big Five Awards D Your beliefs are very powerful and have the power to create or to destroy your life. In most cases, whatever you believe is what you will become. If you believe that you are loser, that you never get a break in life, and you can’t accomplish anything, these things will be your reality. Believe that you are unlimited, that you can do anything you are determined to do, and when you do , your accomplishments will know no bounds. You control your beliefs, and that is how you unlimitedly control your life. This is a very important point. So how do you develop beliefs that will empower you? Many of our beliefs come from our environment, the world we live in on a daily basis. If your environment is limiting your beliefs, then work very hard at changing it. If you are constantly around people who are negative and limiting, find other people to hang out with. Get around positive, successful people. Beliefs also come from past experiences. That is why it is so important to experience success on a regular basis. Set small, achievable goals, and then try your best to reach them. “I will finish this project by early afternoon.” “I’ll make six calls on the phone in the next hour.” “I will exercise for 20 minutes tonight.” When you start to experience success, then you start to believe in success, and that leads to more and bigger successes. Beliefs come from knowledge. The more you learn, the more things you will know to be possible. Always take advantage of opportunities to learn something new. It will bring new possibilities into your beliefs and your life. Most importantly, you can develop new beliefs by setting and imagining goals for your life. Define your goals clearly and accurately. Then, in your mind see yourself achieving them in all of their sensible details. Mentally live the experience, see the sights, hear the sounds, smell the aroma, feel the feelings. Your brought-up beliefs will lead you to their reality. 32. What does the author want to tell us in the first paragraph? A. Beliefs in oneself are vital for his life. B. Positive beliefs benefit one’s health. C. One should always follow his beliefs. D. One with no beliefs is bound to fail. 33. Which of the following sayings could be applied to the formation of one’s beliefs? A. Failure is the mother of success. B. One takes the color of his company. C. The grass is greener on the other hill. D. God help those who help themselves. 34. What can be inferred from the passage? A. It is necessary for one to experience failures. B. It is never too late for one to learn new things. C. Beliefs in oneself can be built- 配套讲稿:
