It had spent 101 years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author's granddaughter. A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown bottle near Kiel,Germany. He said he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then he noticed something inside. The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two German stamps, dated May 17,1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible(字迹模糊的),the readable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It even contained two stamps to pay for postage. From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named Richard Platz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the message. While he was hiking on the Baltic coast with a nature appreciation group,he threw the bottle into the sea. Then the researchers began a search for any living relatives of his. Sure enough, they were able to find his 62-year-old granddaughter,Angela Erdmann, who still lives in Berlin. “It was almost unbelievable,”Erdmann said upon being presented with her grandfather's bottle and message.“That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my face." Erdmann never knew her grandfather, who died in 1946,but says that the discovery of the bottle has made her want to learn more about him. The bottle remained on display at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg until May 1. After that, the researchers examined the postcard and tried to figure out the meaning of the rest of the message. Previously, the oldest message found in a bottle spent nearly 98 years at sea and was discovered in April 2012,according to Guinness World Records. 21 . Countries Laws Vietnam If you’re in Vietnam without a Vietnamese driver’s license, you risk a prison sentence of up to three years. Russia In Moscow, if your car is dirty enough to draw dust art, you will be fined about 2,000 rubles (about US $55). The law states a driver can be fined if the person “is in an irregular position inside the car or raises his hand from the steering wheel unnecessarily. Japan Politeness isn’t just the culture in Japan; it’s part of driving laws. Splashing a person by driving through a puddle(水坑) with your car will cost you over US$60. The country is also strict with its DUI(酒驾) laws — riding with or lending your car to a driver who gets caught drinking and driving can lead to a fine costing thousands of dollars. 24. A. a law document B. a fashion magazine C. an international newspaper D. a column on interesting cultures C Look at the keyboard of any standard typewriter or computer. “Q” ”W” “E” “R” “T” and “Y” are the first six letters. Who decided on this arrangement of the letters? And why? People tried for centuries to invent the typewriter. In 1714 in England, Henry Mill filed a patent for a machine called An Artificial Machine Or Method for the Impressing or Transcribing of Letters, Singly or Progressively one after another, as in Writing, drawing upon this way all Writing may be absorbed in Paper so Neat and Exact as not to be distinguished from Print. That machine probably didn’t sell because no one could remember its name! The first practical typewriter was patented in the United States in 1868 by Christopher Latham Sholes. His machine was known as the type-writer. It had a movable carriage, a lever for turning paper from line to line, and a keyboard on which the letters were arranged in alphabetical order. But Sholes had a problem. On his first model, his “ABC” key arrangement caused the keys to jam when the typist worked quickly. Sholes didn’t know how to keep the keys from sticking, so his solution was to keep the typist from typing too fast. Sholes asked his brother-in-1aw to rearrange the keyboard so that the commonest letters were not so close together and the type bars would come from opposite directions. Thus they would not clash together and jam the machine. The new arrangement was the QWERTY arrangement typists use today. Of course, Sholes claimed that the new arrangement was scientific and would add speed and efficiency. The only efficiency it added was to slow the typist down, since almost any word in the English language required the typist’s fingers to cover more distance on the keyboard. The advantages of the typewriter outweighed the disadvantages of the keyboard. Typists memorized the crazy letter arrangement, and the typewriter became a huge success. By the time typists had memorized the new arrangement of letters and built their speed, typewriter technology had improved, and the keys didn’t stick as badly as they had at first. 28. We know from the passage that the inventor of the first practical typewriter is_____. A. Henry Mill B. Christopher Latham Sholes C. Sholes’ brother-in-law D. Albert Einstein 29.The author thinks the machine invented by Henry Mill could not be sold because______. A. it was difficult for people to accept new things B. there were great disadvantages of the key board C. the name of the machine was too long D. the machine could not be distinguished from print 30. Sholes decided the QWERTY arrangement of the keyboard in order to______. A. solve the problem of the keys jamming B. arrange the letters in alphabetical order C. cause the keys to jam when the typist worked quickly D. compete with “ABC” key arrangement 31. It is inferred that the QWERTY arrangement of the keyboard______. A. is the most scientific arrangement B. adds speed and efficiency of typists C. is easy for typists to memorize D. keeps the typist from typing too fast D Failure is mother of success, as the Chinese saying goes. I know it is not easy as parents to see our children failing. However, there is great value in “failure”. I remember many years ago when I was a student leader, I organized a camp with my committee, which turned out to be a disaster. We scheduled activities too close together, and didn’t assign(分配) enough time for meal and bath. My leaders, who I thought were thoroughly angry with us, led us lead, nevertheless. They kept us in check, and had a few talks with us during the camp and we readjusted the schedule. They gave us the freedom to lead and also the freedom to fail. Many years down the road, I was a guest speaker at a similar camp. Again, it was a disaster for different reasons. The student wrote a schedule, and the leaders rewrote it. The student came up with a menu, and the leaders changed it. While at the camp, the leaders amended (修改) the schedule further. The poor committee couldn’t attempt to lead without being ignored by their leaders. To be sure, I learned more from my failed camp than the one at which I was a guest. Having the skills to plan a camp at 16 set the foundation (基础) for future skills to plan a project and see it through at the workplace. As parents, many of us have much about how success arises from failure. The history of silence is filled with such stories: an experiment that went hopelessly wrong eventually led to something right. Most successes are achieved through persistence(坚持), and often only after persevering through failures, sometimes many times over. We only succeed because of a failure. 32.In the first paragraph the author want to say that _______. A. children are more likely to fail than adults B. Parents should allow children to make mistakes C. parents should know how to lead their children to succeed D. parents should help their children know the value of failure 33.Why did the author fail to organize a successful camp? A. Because he didn’t arrange enough activities B. Because he didn’t prepare meals for campers. C. Because he didn’t arrange the time reasonably D. Because he didn’t take advice from the leaders. 34.It can be inferred from the passage that the author’s leaders ______. A. were disappointed with the students B. were not good at giving advice C. were strict with the students D. were patient with the students 35.By attending the two camps, the author learned that ______. A. leaders should care much about students’need. B. students should be given enough freedom C. students should make a schedule by themselves D. students should ignore leaders’orders. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) Having a happier life is something we all always struggle for.
