Maybe you thought that they were just happy .After all ,you probably sing or whistle when you are happy. Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy .However ,they sing most of the time for a very different reason .Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory. Do you know what a “territory” is ?A territory is an area that an animal ,usually the male, claims(声称)as its own .Only he and his family are welcome there .No other families of the same species(物种)are welcome .Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome . If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you ,you might shout .Probably this would be enough to frighten him away. If so ,you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him .A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time ,especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time ,whether he can see an outsider or not .This screaming is what we call a bird’s song ,and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away. Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs. You can see that birds have a language all their own .Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories. 21.Some scientists believe that most of the time birds’ singing is actually . A.an expression of happiness B.a way of greeting C.an expression of anger D. a way of warning 22.What is a bird’s “territory”? A.A place where families of other species are not accepted. B.An area which a bird considers to be its own . C.An area for which birds fight against each other. D. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice. 23.Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season? A.Because they want to invite more friends. B.Because their singing helps get rid of their fears. C.Because they want to find outsiders around. D.Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away. 24.How does the writer explain birds’ singing? A.By describing birds’ daily life. B.By reporting experiment results. C.By comparing birds with human beings. D.By telling a bird’s story. B “Drink your milk. It’s good for you!” You’ve probably heard that many times, and it’s true. Milk contains calcium, which is a necessary nutrient for keeping bones and teeth healthy and strong. The U.S. government even requires milk as part of the National School Lunch Program, saying that students should drink one cup of fat-free or low-fat milk at each meal. Last Thursday, however, a group of doctors asked the government to remove milk from the lunch program. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) says, “Milk is high in sugar, high in fat and high in animal protein, all of which have negative effects on health.” “One of the only reasons people talk about dairy, or promote it is that it is going to help build strong bones.” says Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the PCRM. There are better and healthier ways to get calcium such as eating beans, broccoli, cereals and tofu. Orange juice and soymilk that have calcium added to them also supply the nutrient. Of course, calcium is important for healthy bones and teeth, but your genes, how much vitamin you take in and getting an hour’s worth of exercise every day all play a part. Some nutritionists disagree with the idea that milk isn’t important. Keri Gans, a dietitian, says, “I think it’s irresponsible to take away milk that children enjoy, especially among those who are unable to meet their nutrient needs for the day, and remove it from the lunch line.” The U.S. government is studying the request of the PCRM, but a decision may be a long way off. Meanwhile, Marion Nestle, a professor at New York University, puts it best: “Milk has nutrients. Other foods have the same nutrients. It’s just a food. Like other foods, too much might be a problem.” 25.Why does the US government ask students to drink one cup of milk at lunch time? A. Milk helps build students’ strong bones. B.They have taken the PCRM’s advice. C.They have been told many times. D.Fat-free or low-fat milk is less expensive. 26.Which of the following opinions does the PCRM support? A.Students should drink more milk each day. B.Milk is the best way to get calcium. C.Orange juice is higher in calcium than milk. D. Milk is harmful to students’ health. 27.What can we learn from Marion Nestle’s words? A.Milk has more nutrients than other food. B. Milk is just a kind of common food. C.Other food also contains much calcium. D.Too much nutrient lies in other food. 28.What does the above text mainly talk about? A.The best way to get the most calcium. B.The connection between milk and health. C.Different opinions about the importance of milk. D.Whether to take milk off the school-lunch menu. C Everybody has had at least one experience from which he knows the meaning of life. This time, which took place several years ago, but seems as if it just happened. On an afternoon several years ago, my brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister’s dress and picked out a beautiful skirt. “ Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion.” he said.I guess this was the occasion: it was the funeral of my sister, after her unexpected death. He took the shirt and put it on bed, with the other clothes we were taking to the funeral. Then he closed the drawer and turned to me, “Don’t ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you’re alive is a special occasion.” I’m thinking about his words, and they’ve changed the way I live my life. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a kind of experience to enjoy, not to suffer. “Someday ”and “one of these days ”are losing their importance on my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. Ever since that day, I have been trying very hard not to put off, hold back or save anything that would add laughter and color to our lives. Every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath, truly is a gift. So cherish every day and find the true meaning of your life. 29.Why did Jan buy the beautiful skirt but didn’t wear it ? A.She waited for a special occasion to wear it on. B.She wanted to keep it for someone else. C.She saved it till she grew up. D.She would give it to herself as a gift some day. 30.From this experience, the author learns that_______. A.everybody can have a happy life through efforts B.every day in our lives is worth cherishing C.enjoying ourselves is the most important thing in our lives D.everybody will have some things left to do after his death 31.What does the author write this passage for? A.To tell people to cherish every day and find the meaning of life. B.To explain the true meaning of his brother-in-law’s words. C.To show how to make good use of everyday in life. D.To encourage people to waste time and enjoy themselves in life. 32.What’s the best title for this passage? Mark began to introduce the guest speaker to the audience, but then he paused in horror. 36 Barbara hid her jewelry when she went on vacation. When she came back, she couldn’t remember where she’d put it. 37 Most people have. But memory can be developed. First, relax. If you’re overanxious about remembering something, you’ll forget it. 38 Take a deep breath and tell yourself that you have all the time in the world to remember. Second, avoid being negative. If you keep telling yourself that your memory is bad, your mind will come to believe it and you won’t remember things. When you forget something, don’t say, “ Gee, I need to have my brain rewired (重装电线).” To improve your memory, you’ll need to take an active role. Like your body, your memory can be strengthened through exercise. 39 For example, if you’re learning a language, try to actively remember irregular verbs. You may also want to make associations, or links, between what you’re trying to remember and things you already know. For example, if you need to catch a plane at 2:00pm, you can imagine a plane in your mind and notice that it has two wings. 40 A. Don’t worry. B. He had forgotten her name. C.
