Now always-on-the-go New Yorkers have Liz and Bill. Liz and Bill, two college graduates in their early 20s, have spent a whole year trying to have thousands of people talk to them in subway stations and on busy street corners. Just talk. Using a 2-foot-tall sign that says, "Talk to Me," they attract conversationalists, who one evening included a mental patient, and men in business suits. They don't collect money. They don't push religion . So what's the point? "To see what happens," said Liz. "We simply enjoy life with open communication." Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, they decided to walk from New York City to Washington, a 270-mile trip. They found they loved talking to people along the way and wanted to continue talking with strangers after their return. "It started as a crazy idea," Liz said. "We were so curious about all the strangers walking by with their life stories. People will talk to us about anything: their jobs, their clothes, their childhood experiences, anything." Denise wanted to talk about an exam she was about to take. She had stopped by for the second time in two days, to let the two listeners know how it went. Marcia had lost her husband to a serious disease. "That was very heavy on my mind,” Marcia said. "To be able to talk about it to total strangers was very good," she explained. To celebrate a year of talking, the two held a get-together in a city park for all the people they had met over the past year. A few hundred people showed up, as well as some television cameramen and reporters. They may plan more parties or try to attract more people to join their informal talks. Some publishers have expressed interest in a book, something they say they'll consider. 21. What did Liz and Bill start doing after September 2001? A. Chatting with people. B. Setting up street signs. C. Telling stories to strangers. D. Organizing a speaker's comer. 22. What they have been doing can be described as______. A. pointless B. normal C. crazy D. successful 23. Why are Denise and Marcia mentioned in the text? A. They knew Liz and Bill very well. B. They happened to meet the writer of the text. C. They organized the get-together in the city park. D. They are examples of those who talked to Liz and Bill. 24. What will Liz and Bill do in the future? A. Go in for publishing. B. Do more television programs. C. Continue what they are doing. D. Spend more time reading books. 25. How do they like the idea of writing a book? A. They have decided to wait a year or two. B. They will think about it carefully. C. They agreed immediately. D. They find it hard to do that. B If you want to be a success, study at the University of Waikato is right for you. The university is internationally recognized for its excellence and achievements. See a doctor at the school medical centre. D. Try to get help from your classmates. C The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song. By 9:45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11:00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry. Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30—8:30pm means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8:00pm or 8:30pm means possible dinner, but 9:30pm and any time thereafter means no food, eat beforehand, arrive late. But this is not always the case. If asked to a students' party at 6:30pm, it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive - looking eager - is social death. When my mother is asked to a party for 6:30, she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age group (late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think we're young, we're probably closer to student-time than grown-up time. The accepted custom at present is confusing, sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element of surprise. 29. Jane and David' s story is used to show that______ . A. party-goers usually get hungry at parties B. party invitations can be confusing C. people should ask for food at parties D. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull 30. According to the writer, people in their late thirties_______. A. are likely to arrive late for a party B. care little about the party time C. haven' t really grown up yet D. like surprises at parties 31. What is the general idea of the text? A. It' s safe to arrive late just when food is served. B. It' s wise to eat something before going to a party. C. It' s important to follow social rules of party-going. D. It' s necessary to read invitations carefully. D Millions of aircraft take off around the world every year. The skies they fly in seem limitless—miles of empty space. But, with the number of flights increasing each year, this emptiness no longer exists. Researchers in the world of aviation(航空)are worried about the increasing pressure on pilots and ground controllers. And increasing collisions, occurring at or near an airport, have called attention to the need for more aids(辅助设备)to aviation control. People who travel the skies are not certain about air safety. A great deal of money is spent on new and bigger aircraft and airports to deal with the vast increase in passengers travelling by air. Only a small percentage of this money is spent on navigation(导航)and other aids. Actually, suitable electronic equipment has long existed, and many companies market safety aids designed to make it safer for aircraft to take off, fly any distance, and land, whatever the weather. Yet, there are two problems to be solved. The first is to get governments, airlines and airport officials to agree to basic levels of safety aids. The second problem is to find a way of meeting these basic requirements. But no matter how well the equipment works, operators of the equipment still play an important role. Communications between pilots and ground controllers are extremely important to air safety. It is worth pointing out that the mishearing or misunderstanding of instructions in English, and the use of another language, in an international conversation, have led to two recent aircraft accidents. A new type of instrument called FLIGHTWATCH would help pilots prevent airport collisions. It would be particularly helpful near airports. 32. The increasing number of flights leads to the fact that__________. A. flying is no longer limited in the sky B. there is no empty space for aids to aviation control C. piloting and controlling planes is getting more difficult D. the pressure on the ground becomes greater 33. There is uncertainty about air safety because__________. A. planes become bigger for the increasing number of passengers B. money spent on electronic equipment is far from enough C. suitable electronic equipment hasn’t been invented yet D. it is dangerous for planes to take off or land 34. The underlined word “ collisions ” probably means__________. A. accidents in which two planes hit each other B. misunderstandings between pilots and ground controllers C. quarrels among passengers D. breakdowns of new types of instrument 35. It can be inferred from the passage that__________. A. governments and officials have paid great attention to air safety B. there should be more companies to sell new safety aids C. Eng- 配套讲稿:
