Diagnosed with diabetes(糖尿病), Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin(胰岛素) three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness, and even death. And if that weren't bad enough, he had no health insurance. After a month of feeling upset, Thomas decided he'd better find a way to fight back. He left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created , a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources. Jason Swencki’s son, Kody, was diagnosed with type diabetes at six. Father and son visit the online children's forums(论坛) together most evenings. "Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over," says Swencki, one of the site's volunteers. "They know what he's going through, so he doesn't feel alone." Kody is anything but alone: Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages. These days, Thomas's main focus is his charity(慈善机构), Fight It, which provides medicines and supplies to people—225 to date—who can't afford a diabetic's huge expenses. Fight-it.org has raised about $23,000—in products and in cash. In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in the Caribbean. Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while still doing his full-time job waiting tables. "Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure," says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar's original members. "But Christopher is the only person I know saying people need help now." 21. Which of the following is true of Christopher Thomas? A. He needs to go to the doctor every day. B. He studies the leading cause of diabetes. C. He has a positive attitude to this disease. D. He encourages diabetics by writing articles. 22. D was created for _________. A. diabetics to communicate B. volunteers to find jobs C. children to amuse themselves D. rock stars to share resources. 23. According to the text, Kody ______. A. feel lonely because of his illness. B. benefits from C. helps create the online kid’s forums. D. writes children’s stories online 24. The last paragraph suggests that Thomas ______. A. works full-time in a diabetes charity B. employs 22 people for his website C. helps diabetics in his own way D. ties to find a cure for diabetes B Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place. The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard. Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue , encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary. There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realise just how much unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb. 25. What does the underlined phrase “over-consumption” refer to? A. Using too much packaging. B. Recycling too many wastes. C. Making more products than necessary. D. Having more material than is needed. 26. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show _______ . A. the tendency of cutting household waste. B. the increase of packaging recycling C. the rapid growth of super markets. D. the fact of packaging overuse 27. According to the text, recycling ______ . A. helps control the greenhouse effect. B. means burning packaging for energy. C. is the solution to gas shortage. D. leads to a waste of land 28. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality. B. Supermarkets care more about packaging. C. It is improper to judge quality by packaging. D. Other products are better packaged than food. C Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic and reached the American continent in October, 1492. However, the name America had nothing to do with him. There was another European explorer who reached this continent several years after Columbus. This man’s name was America Vespucci, and he called this land a New World. America Vespucci and Columbus had much in common. Like Columbus, Vespucci was an Italian who settled in Spain. Like Columbus, Vespucci made several trips to the New World, his first trip being in 1499. In 1505, several letters thought to have been written by Vespucci were published. One of these letters said that “Vespucci found a new continent with more people and more animals than in Europe, Asia and Africa”. Just at that time, a man named Waldseemuller was writing a geography book. He suggested that the continent be named “America” after America Vespucci. His idea was quickly accepted, and so the name began to be used. 29. From the passage we know that Christopher Columbus _______. A. named the continent “America” B. was America Vespucci’s companion C. was an Italian who settled in Spain D. reached the New World later than America Vespucci 30. Which of the following is NOT true? A. Columbus didn’t call the land he reached a New World. B. Columbus and Vespucci were from two different countries. C. Vespucci himself didn’t name the continent. D. If Vespucci hadn’t reached this continent, the continent might have been named after some other persons. 31. Which is the right order of happenings as mentioned in the passage? ① Columbus’ reaching the continent in October, 1492. ② Columbus’ sailing across the Atlantic. ③ The publishing of the letters. ④ The continents being named “America” after America. ⑤ Vespucci’s finding a new continent with more people and more animals. ⑥ The writing of a geography book. A. ②①⑤③⑥④ B. ②①③⑤⑥④ C. ①②③⑤⑥④ D. ②①③⑤④⑥ D Jack Vance is one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time. He has won two Hugo awards for two novels: The Dragon Masters and The Last Castle. These have long been associated with each other, not just because they have both won Hugo awards, but also because they share certain themes. Both stories are set in the future, and they feature humans enslaving (奴役) aliens. In each, the plot turns to a war between the humans and the aliens. In The Dragon Masters, after the war the humans that remain are mostly slaves of aliens — except on one planet where a few remain free. In fact, these free humans have captured (捕获) some aliens and are keeping them as slaves. The hero, Joaz Banbeck, has predicted that many aliens will come to their planet some day, and he tries to organize a group to defend the planet. The story works its way to a reasonable and rather bitter and unchangeable conclusion. In The Last Castle a group of decadent (颓废的) humans have returned to the long-abandoned Earth and set up a weak society in several castles. All of the work is performed by various alien races. For example, the Meks, a hive-like (像蜂群的) species, always keep a special technology. The Meks finally revolt (反抗). Using their control of the technology, they destroy all of the castles except the strongest one, Castle Hagedorn. Then the story turns to the ineffective attempts of the humans to fight against the aliens. Most of them care too much about their “honor” and do nothing, and others refuse to kill the aliens. The prose (散文体) and characterization here are more effective than in The Dragon Masters, but the plot is less convincing (令人信服的). 32. What do the two science fiction novels mentioned in the passage have in common? A. They both have won lots of prizes. B. They both have exciting and convincing plots. C. They both describe humans as slaves of aliens. D. They both have fighting between humans and aliens. 33. We learn from The Last Castle that ___________. A. The castles are places which humans use to fight against aliens B. the humans have different attitudes towards fighting against the aliens C. a powerless society has been established by the aliens D. the aliens care more about their “honor” than the humans 34. What is the disadvantage of The Last Castle? A. It has no effective description of characters. B. It gives people less space to imagine. C. The plot is less believable. D. Its ending is not as reasonable as the other book. 35. The best title for the passage is “________”. A. A Great Science Fiction Author B. Jack Vance and the Hugo Awards C. The Great Science Fiction Works of Jack Vance D. Conflicts between Humans and Aliens 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? 36 It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway. Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name- 配套讲稿:
