But don’t forget to make sure that you have enough left for recreational activities or simply to be“with”yourself: reading a novel or watching a television programme. As part of your weekly schedule, it is also advisable to consider exactly what you have to do in that week, and make sure that you handle the most significant tasks first. 2 . On a physical level, make sure you have an area or space for studying. 3 . If you always study in the same place, preferably a room of your own, you will find it easier to adjust mentally to the activity when you enter that area. You should have everything that you might need at hand. Make sure that all the physical equipment that you use, such as a desk, chair etc. is at good height for you. If you use a personal computer, there are plenty of guidelines available from the movement on angles, lighting and the like. 4 . If you are working on topic your teacher has set, but finding it hard to concentrate, it may be that you actually need to take your mind right off it for a period of time. 5 . After a period away from the test, not having thought about it at all, you may return to it refreshed and full of ideas. A.It’s wise to leave the easier or less urgent areas of your work until later B.It’s all too easy to read something and then forget where it came from C.Consult these and avoid the typical student aches and pains D.“Airing the mind”can work wonders sometimes E.Make use of equipment that is available to you F.It is best to make a weekly schedule G.Don’t do it just anywhere 2 Do you know how to pick a good book you’ll really like? Here are some tips. Start With Your Interest. 6 . You can pick something that you love to read, not for school. They can be ancient martial (武术) arts, computers, or fashion design. You name it, there are books about it. What’s Your Type? Do you prefer fiction(科幻小说) or nonfiction (or both)? Fiction books, like novels, can transport you to another world or help you imagine something beyond your own experience. Nonfiction books give you the who, what, when, and why of something. 7 . Many of them read like novels from start to finish. Read the description(描述). The reviews and quotes(引语) on the back and inside covers of many books give you an idea of what the book is about. They can also help you pick future books, too. If you find a book you really like, take a minute to read the quotes and see which authors praised the book. 8 . Find a Family Favorite. Which book did your mother love best when she was at your age? 9 . Find out and give them a read — then you can share your thoughts about the book. Finally, you’ll probably enjoy what you’re reading a lot more if you find a quiet place and make time for the book. 10 . You can put on some good music, get yourself some tea and let yourself be carried away by the book. You’ll see that time does fly when you’re reading something you love! A. How about your brothers and sisters? B. They tell stories using facts — but that doesn’t mean they’re boring. C. Reading is a good way to improve your English. D. Most reading is best enjoyed when you can concentrate (全神贯注) on it. E. Often, they’ll have similar styles and you might find books you like by those authors, too. F. So you should read as much as possible when you are free. G. Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school. 3 Today, we tell about the expression apple-pie order. It means in perfect order, very well organized. 11 Some say that Scottish and English writers use the expression a long time ago. Others say it was first used in the northeastern American state—New England. 12 Then they filled pie pans with them in an organized way — row upon row. This perhaps explains why it’s believed to begin in New England. Another old expression describes the opposite condition — chaos. That expression is apple of discord(不和). It comes from ancient mythology(神话). It says that all the gods and goddesses were celebrating the marriage of Thetis and Peleus. One of the gods, Discord, a troublemaker, threw a golden apple on the table to be given as a prize to the most beautiful goddess. It was not an easy decision to make. 13 He decided to give it to Venus. Juno and Minerva were very angry and threatened him. This, the myth says, began the Trojan War. At one time the tomato was called a love apple. That was a mistake. 14 In the sixteenth century, Spain imported tomato form south America. Spain then exported tomato to Morocco. Italian traders carried it onto Italy. The Italian name for tomato was pomo de Mauro, apple of the Moores. When French growers imported it from Italy, they thought de Mauro meant d’amour, the French word for love, and so pomme d’amour became the apple of love. 15 One belief is that it has great powers of keeping people healthy. A very common expression is “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Another belief is based on fact: one rotten apple spoils the barrel. The expression has come to mean that one bad person in a group can cause everyone to act bad. A. Everyone present had the right to vote. B. This is how the mistake happened. C. People believe many things about the apple. D. There are also many stories about the apple. E. Paris was given the task of deciding. F. The housewives there cut their apples in even slices. G. Nobody is sure where and when the expression began. 4 Self-confidence, motivation (动机), support and knowledge are the main factors determining if one succeeds or fails. Each of these factors influences our chances of success in a different way. 16 . Lack of self-confidence is probably the most dreadful enemy of success. 17 Even the most capable person is sure to fail with such an attitude. If it is your case too, improving your self-confidence is a must. Motivation is equally as important as self-confidence. 18 You may even not try to achieve the goal that lies before you. It is important to find out what is the best motivation for you. If you have to do something that does not motivate you, just treat yourself with a reward after you succeed. Of course, this reward should consist of something that will motivate you to pursue(追求) a success. 19 While it is not a must for succeeding in your goals, a lack of support can often lead to failure. It is also true that some people cannot succeed without a proper support from their surroundings. These people often lose their motivation or worse, their self-confidence. If you know such a person, supporting him or her is a right thing to do. Also surround yourself with the right people. You will see the results soon. Pursuing realistic goals is also important for a success. You should always make sure that your goals are achievable. 20 Unrealistic goals usually lead to a fast failure and also make many people embarrassed. A. As we know, many people try but do not succeed. B. Consider all your knowledge and skills when setting up a goal. C. Motivation is something in yourself that can push you forwards. D. There are several main reasons why some people cannot succeed. E. Supportive family and collective workplace are also very important. F. Without it, you will not push yourself towards a better performance. G. Thinking you are not good enough to achieve your goals is the same as deciding that you will not succeed. 5 Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a batter student in several ways 21 .Second, your notes are excellent materials to refer to when you are studying for a test. Third, note-taking offers variety to your study time and helps you to hold your interest. You will want to take notes during classroom discussions and while reading a textbook or doing research for a report 22 .Whenever or however you take notes, keep in mind that note-taking is a selective process. 23 The following methods may work best for you. ●Read the text quickly to find the main facts and ideas in it. ●Carefully read the text and watch for words that can show main points and supporting facts. ● Write your notes in your own words. ● 24 ● Note any questions or ideas you may have about what was said or written. As you take notes, you may want to use your own shorthand(速记). When you do, be sure that you understand your symbols and that you use them all the time. 25 A. Use words, not complete sentences. B. There are three practical note-taking methods. C. You must write your notes on separate paper. D. Otherwise, you may not be able to read your notes later. E. you will also want to develop your own method for taking notes. F. That means you must first decide what is important enough to include in your notes. G. First, the simple act of writing something down makes it easier for you to understand and remember it. 6 Being fit is a way of saying a person eats well, gets a lot of physical exercise, and has a healthy weight. There are a lot of discussions these days about fit kids. 26 1. Eat a variety of foods. You may have a favorite food, but the best choice is to eat a variety. 27 Taste new foods and old ones you haven’t tried for a while. Some foods, such as green vegetables, are more pleasing the older you get. Shoot for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day — two fruits and three vegetables. 2. Listen to your body. What does it feel like to be full? When you’re eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach feels comfortably full. Sometimes, people eat too much because they don’t notice when they need to stop eating. 28 And over a period of time, overeating can lead to unhealthy weight gain. 3. 29 What’s screen time? It’s the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games, and using the computer. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time available for active stuff, like basketball, bike riding and swimming. 30 These rules aren’t magic. However, follow them most of the time and you can become a fit kid sooner or later. A. Limit screen time. B. If you’re a kid who wants to be fit, here are three rules to live by. C. Drink water and milk. D. Ask your parents to help you do your favorite activities regularly. E. Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable. F. If you eat different foods, you’re more likely to get the nutrients your body needs. G. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time. 7 Eyesight plays a very important role in our daily life. Every waking moment, the eyes are working to see the world around us. Over forty percent of Americans worry about losing eyesight, but it’s easy to include steps into our daily life to ensure healthy eyes. Here are five suggestions for a lifetime of healthy eyesight: •Schedule yearly exams. 31 Experts advise parents to bring babies 6 to 12 months of age to the doctor for a careful check. The good news is that millions of children now can have yearly eye exams and following treatment, including eyeglasses. • Protect against UV rays (紫外线). Long-term stay in the sun creates risk to your eyes. No matter what the season is, it is extremely important to wear sunglasses. ___32_ • Give your eyes a break. Two-thirds of Americans spend up to seven hours a day using computers or other digital products. 33 Experts recommend that people practice the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. • 34 As part of a healthy diet, eat more fruits and vegetables each day. Vitamins (维生素) C and E help protect eyesight and promote eye health. • Practice safe wear and care of contact lenses (隐形眼镜). Many Americans use contact lenses to improve their eyesight. While some follow the medical guidance for wearing contact lenses, many are breaking the rules and putting their eyesight at risk. 35 Otherwise, you may have problems such as red eyes, pain in the eyes, or a more serious condition. A. Eat your greens. B. Eye care should begin early in life. C. They can properly protect your eyes. D. Stay in good shape by taking more Vitamins. E. Parents usually don’t care about their own eyesight. F. Always follow the doctor’s advice for appropriate wear. G. This frequent eye activity increases the risk for eye tiredness. I was taking a train to London’s Victoria Station.
