No one in my family had ever known what an albino was and what it meant to be an albino. My family and friends treated me like everybody else. That was just about the best thing they could have done. It helped me believe in myself, so when troubles came along, I could deal with them. Like most albinos, I had terrible eyesight, but the fact that I could hardly see didn’t trouble me that much. Kids would make fun of me, calling me “Whitey”. People stared at me when I held reading material right at the tip of my nose so that I could see it well enough. Even when I was eight, movie-theatre clerks started asking me to pay full price because I “looked older”. The worst part for me was that because my eyesight was so bad, I couldn’t play sports very well. I didn’t give up trying, though. I shot hoops (投篮) every day. And I studied harder. Eventually, I got better at school and loved it. By the time I got to college, I was double majoring, going to summer school and busying myself with every activity I could find. I had learned to be proud of being an albino. I did my best to make “albino” a positive word. And I decided to make my living with my eyes – and in sports. I couldn’t see very well to play sports, but with a solid education and a drive to do it, I could make a living involved in the area I loved. I’ve done it now for over thirty years in print and in video, and now in cyberspace (网络空间). People make jokes about how I’m the only “blind editor” they know, but the jokes are affectionate, some of them signs of respect. I was just a proud albino kid from the coal country of Pennsylvania. I now realize that being born an albino helped me to overcome difficulties, gain confidence and be proud of my personal achievement. 21. According to the author, ______ helped him a lot in dealing with troubles. A. the special care from his family and friends B. the care and love from the public C. the equal way his family and friends treated him D. his education in school 22. All the following are the signs of being an albino for the author EXCEPT _____. A. unusually white skin B. poor eyesight C. an older appearances D. being unable to play sports 23. We can infer from the passage that ________. A. the author’s poor eyesight made him very upset B. the author finally did well in playing sports after years of practice C. many people laugh at the author because he tries to do more than he can D. the author holds an optimistic attitude towards his illness B If you’ve ever had a dog, you know just how deep a connection you can develop with “man’s best friend”. But a dog has a much shorter life span than humans – about 12 to 15 years long , which means every dog owner has to go through the heartbreaking moment when their loving pet passes away. Why not make a clone(克隆)of that dog then? This is the solution offered by a South Korean company, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation. The company has successfully cloned at least 400 dogs, mostly for US customers, ever since it pioneered the technique in 2005. Now, Sooam Biotech is planning to introduce their business to UK dog owners, offering them dogs that look just like their lost ones. Meanwhile, another dog is selected to supply an egg(卵子). Researchers then replace the DNA in the egg with that from the skin cell and put the egg into the womb (子宫) of a female dog. The egg grows into a young dog over the following two months. To clone a dog, researchers first need to take a skin cell from a living dog or one that has just died. It takes less than a day to do it , but it comes at a shockingly high price – around £63,000 . But if you can’t afford it now, you can also save the cells in a laboratory and use them at a later date. Just like identical twins of humans, they share the exact same DNA but there will still be small differences between them. “The spots on a Dalmatian clone will be different, for example,” Insung Hwang, head of Sooam Biotech, told The Guardian. However, as magical as cloning might sound, there is no guarantee that the cloned dog will be a perfect copy of the original one. Dog owners will also have to accept the fact that personality is not “clone-able”. Apart from genes, personality is also determined by upbringing and environment, which cloning technologies simply cannot overcome”, Professor Tom Kirkwood at Newcastle University, UK, told The Telegraph. Perhaps bringing our dogs back with cloning is not the best way to remember them after all. Kirkwood, a dog owner himself, pointed out: “An important aspect of our relationship with them is accept the pain of letting go.” 24. According to the article, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation is ______. A. working on plans to help dog owners enjoy their pets longer B. offering a way to help dogs give birth to more young dogs C. providing a service that will make copies of pet dogs D. introducing a completely new technique to clone dogs 25. A. disagree with B. supports C. fears D. appreciates C It is good to get in touch with your inner child from time to time, and obviously some people are willing to pay big money for the chance to do so in a proper environment.A Brooklyn-based adult preschool is charging customers between $333 and $999 for the chance to act like a kid again. At Preschool Mastermind in New York adults get to participate in show—and—tell, arts—and—crafts such as finger paint, games like musical chairs and even take naps. The month-long course also has class picture day where the adults are expected to have a field trip and a parent day. 30-year-old Michelle Joni Lapidos, the brain behind the adult preschool, studied childhood education and has always wanted to be a preschool teacher. She’s always on the lookout for new ways to get people in touch with the freedom of childhood.A friend encouraged her to start the mastermind course instead. According to Candice, her blogger friend, Preschool Mastermind gives adults a chance to relearn and master the things that they failed to understand as children.“I realized all the significances of what we learn in preschool,”said founder Michelle Joni“People come here and get in touch with their inner child. It’s magical. We are bringing ourselves back to another place, another time with ourselves when we are more believing in ourselves, more confident and ready to take on the world.” “One person’s here because they want to learn not to be so serious.”Michelle said.“Another's her to learn to be more confident.”She explained that most of the classes were planned. However, Joni added that while the planned activities were fun, it was often the spontaneous moments that attracted students.“It’s the things you don’t plan for, the sharing between friends and learning from each other.” 28.What is the purpose of Preschool Mastermind? D I hear many parents saying that their teenage children are rebellion(反叛的). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to seize at one another’s hands for safety. They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(蚕茧) -----into a larger cocoon. It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly opened up a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from newspapers and TV what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award(奖励) high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the difficulty is worth getting over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come-----with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts. 32. The writer’s purpose in writing this passage is to tell_______. A. readers how to be popular in the word B. teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselves C. parents how to control and guide their children D. people how to understand and respect each other 33. According to the writer, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but, in fact, most of them______. A. have much difficulty in understanding each other B. are not sure of themselves C. dare not do things D. are very much afraid of getting lost 34. Which of the following is NOT true according to passage? A. There is no popularity that really counts. B. What many parents ate doing is actually keeping their children from finding their own paths. C. It is not necessarily had for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates. D. Most teenagers say they want to do what they like to, but in fact they are- 配套讲稿:
