Noah Webster, born on October 16, 1758, is known for The American Dictionary of the English Language．He has been called the" Father of American Scholarship and Education．" His " Blue-Backed Speller" books were used to teach spelling and reading to five generations of American children．But how much do you know about him beyond that?
At the age of 16, Noah Webster began attending Yale College, Unfortunately, he spent his four years at Yale during the American Revolutionary War, and, because of food shortages, many of his college classes were held in Glastonbury, Connecticut．Later, he served in the army．Having graduated from Yale in 1778, Webster wanted to continue his education in order to earn his law degree．He had to teach school in order to pay for his education．He set up many small schools that didn’t survive, but he was a good teacher because instead of forcing his students to learn, like what most teachers did, he rewarded them．
He earned his law degree in, 1781, but did not practice law until 1789．Once he started he found the law was not to his liking．Webster did not have much money．
In 1793, Alexander Hamilton lent him $ 1500 to move to New York City to edit a newspaper．In December, he founded New York’s first daily newspaper, American Minerva, and edited it for four years．For decades, he published textbooks, political essays, a report on some diseases, and newspaper articles for his party．He wrote so much that a modern list of his published works required 655 pages．
Noah Webster died on May 28, 1843 and was buried in the Grove Street Cemetery．

A new ingredient developed by scientist in Scotland could mean that ice cream lovers can enjoy their treats longer before they melt. The scientists predict that the slow-melting product could become available in three to five years. The development could also allow products to be made with less saturated fat (饱和脂肪)and fewer calories．
Research teams at the Universities of Edinburgh and Dundee have discovered that the protein, known as BsIA, works by sticking together the air, fat and water in ice cream. It is also said to prevent ice crystals from forming.[Z-X-X-K]
Professor Cait MacPhee, of the University of Edinburgh's school of physics and astronomy, who led the project, said：“It’s not completely non-melting because you do want your ice cream to be cold. It will melt eventually but hopefully by keeping it stable for longer it will stop it from falling in big drops.”
The team developed a method of producing the protein, which occurs naturally in some foods as friendly bacteria. According to Professor MacPhee, it works by keeping oil and water mixed together, stops air from escaping and coats the ice crystals in ice cream which stops them from melting so quickly. She says, “This is a natural protein already in the food chain．It’s already used to ferment(使发酵) some foods so it’s a natural product. By using this protein, we’re replacing some of the fat molecules that are currently used to stabilize these oil and water mixtures，so it can reduce the fat content, but it shouldn’t taste any different. It can also reduce the sugar content and so be used in other foods to help reduce calories."
The researchers believe using the ingredient could benefit manufacturers too, as it can be processed without having an influence on performance and can be produced from sustainable raw materials.

LONDON—A giant panda at Washington’s zoo surprised scientists and zookeepers by becoming a mom again after years of failed pregnancies(怀孕).
Scientists at the zoo had all but given up on 14-year-old Mei Xiang’s chances of pregnancy. However, she gave birth again on late Sunday, ten years after her first cub, a male named Tai Shan, was born in 2005. Officials will follow Chinese custom and give it a name after 1 00 days. Mei Xiang and her mate Tian Tian, born in China, are the second pair of pandas to live at the zoo. They’re treated very kindly.
Since 2007, zoo officials have had five unsuccessful attempts at artificially inseminating(人工受精) Mei Xiang. But each time there was no cub. As a result, they had considered replacing Mei Xiang or 15-year-old Tian Tian with other pandas. Still, there was hope.
