That night’s call was no different. “Hello?” My heart beat hard. “Mama?” The voice answered. My thoughts immediately went to my daughter. “Mama, I’ve been drinking. I nearly ran off the road a few miles back. All I could think of was if it would hurt you if a policeman came to your door and said I’d been killed. I want to come home. I know running away was wrong. I know you’ve been worried. I should have called you days ago but I was afraid.” My senses were clear now, “I think…” “No! Please let me finish!” She cried hopelessly. Before I could go on, she continued. “Are you still there? Please don’t hang up on me! I need you.” “I’m here, I wouldn’t hang up,” I said. “I know I should have told you. But, when we talk, you just keep telling me what I should do. You don’t listen to me. You never let me tell you how I feel. Because you’re my mother, you think you have all the answers. But sometimes I don’t need answers. I just want someone to listen.” “I’m listening,” I answered quietly. “I called a taxi. I’m coming home, Mama.” There was a click, and the phone went silent. Tears forming in my eyes, I walked into my 16 -year -old daughter’s room. I wiped the tears. “We have to learn to listen,” I said to my husband. He studied me for a second, and then asked, “Do you think she’ll ever know she got the wrong number?” I looked at our sleeping daughter, and then back at him. “Maybe it wasn’t such a wrong number.” 16. But on March 5th in 1975, 32 men gathered to find answers to this question. It was the first meeting of the Homebrew Computer Club. Everyone in the club shared the same hobby — fitting together computer parts. The members of Homebrew differed in their levels for skill and experience. Some worked for computer companies. Some had just graduated from high school, and some just loved playing with electronics. They were all excited about the possibilities of the personal computer. __________ After six months the group grew to 100 members. Meetings were held in a spirit of fun and discovery. The people in the group didn’t care about making money. They just wanted to share their ideas — and computer parts — freely. They hoped that their dream of making low-cost home computers would come true for common people. Without being prevented by the group’s fun-loving nature, many members went on to achieve great things. One of the youngest, Bob Lash, went on to invent several electronic medical machines. Another member, John Draper, developed one of the first word-processing programs. Somewhere in the Homebrew crowd sat perhaps its most famous member, Steve Wozniak. The young engineer seldom spoke during meetings. But when he first shared his idea for the Apple I computer, everyone paid attention. This computer helped point the way toward the future of low-cost, personal computers. And, of course, it resulted in Wozniak forming a partnership with the talented Steve Jobs. Although the Homebrew Computer Club stopped meeting in 1986, its influence lives on. Thanks to the Homebrew Computer Club, a great number of people today enjoy the convenience of personal computers. 21. Which is the best sentence for the blank in the second paragraph? A. So all of the members worked hard. B. They had a meeting every weekend. C. And their excitement spread quickly. D. They invited more young inventors. 22. What did the Homebrew Computer Club work for? A. Putting computer parts together. B. Developing processing programs. C. Having fun and making money. D. Making low-cost home computers. 23. What can be learned from the passage? A. Bob Lash is the youngest and always silent in club. B. John Draper developed electronic medical machines. C. Steve Wozniak gave the idea for the Apple I computer. D. Steve Jobs is the most famous member in the Homebrew. 24. How many years did the Homebrew Computer Club last? A. Nine. B. Eleven. C. Thirty. D. Forty-one. 25. Which of the following statement is true? A. The influence of the Homebrew Club has never stopped. B. There were 100 members when the club had its first meeting. C. All the men in the Homebrew Club had achieved great things. D. Members in club were good at creating new computer games. C Have you ever heard a group of frogs singing at night? You probably didn’t realize that you were listening to frogs communicating with one another. Frogs are good at being heard but not seen, and that’s important for their safety. These animals have some characteristics (特征) that protect them from being killed or eaten. One characteristic is their size. Most frogs are small, which helps them hide easily. Many frogs also have special colors that allow them to hide in their environment, making it difficult for predators (捕食者) to find them. And most frogs are active at night. They search for food in the dark, so it’s difficult for most animals to see them. Peter Narins is a scientist who studies how frogs call one another. He made recordings of frog calls and played them back to other frogs to see whether they would answer. He has learned that frogs use their calls to help them tell friends from enemies. One way is to sing the same notes at the same volume (音量) each time they call. When Narins played back calls at a louder volume than a real frog’s call, frogs didn’t call back. Narins has also found that frogs of the same species (种类) always sing the same patterns. When Narins made recordings and mixed up the patterns, the frogs didn’t call back. The patterns are like codes (密码) that are different from other animals’ calls, so it’s difficult for others to copy. Narins also found out that time plays a role in frog calls. Many frogs call only at a certain time of night. For example, the coqui, a small frog that lives in Puerto Rico, calls only from sunset to midnight. It waits for other frogs to finish their calls before it begins making its “co-qui” sound. It seems that frogs are able to stay connected with others of their species. Being heard but not seen is one way frogs remain safe. If scientists want to better understand the purpose of frog calls, they have more work to do. 26. Which of the following can be put into the blank? A. Most of them are active at night. B. They sing loud songs along with other animals. C. They return to the same place to sleep every day. D. They repeat the sounds of other animals. They are small. ___________ They have special colors Advantages for frogs to protect themselves 27. What should a frog do to make other frogs call back? A. A frog should call the same note at the same volume. B. A frog should sing at a louder volume than other frogs. C. A frog should call with two different kinds of patterns. D. A frog should sing from morning to night. 28. What does Narins’s study of frog calls show about frogs? A. They sing differently when people are near them. B. They know the special sounds their species makes. C. They often repeat sons they hear from other animals. D. They sing louder during the day than at night. 29. Which is TRUE according to the passage? A. Frogs sing in order to be seen by people and other frogs. B. Being heard but not seen is the only way for frogs to keep themselves safe. C. Frogs can tell the difference between friends and enemies by their calls. D. People have completely understood why frogs make calls. 30. Why did the writer write the passage? A. To list the reasons why frog calls are different among species. B. To offer the reasons why people have trouble knowing frog calls. C. To describe some ways scientists study frog calls. D. To explain how frogs use their calls to keep themselves safe. 第二节 任务型阅读 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) A. Offering an Opinion B. Giving a Hand C. Never Saying Somebody Has Done Wrong D. Making Requests E. Saying Sorry F. Turning Down an Invitation 第31-35题讲述了如何在日常生活中得体地、礼貌地表达自己的想法。请仔细阅读各题,并从A至F选项中,选出符合各生活情景所涉及的最佳主题。其中有一项是多余选项。 31. The young woman at the airline check-in desk meant no harm. She greeted a customer with a question which would be no problem—in Chinese, “What’s your problem?” But this question is impolite in English, and the customer became very angry. In this situation, the young woman should say, “May I help you?” or “How can I help you?” Then she would not be facing an unhappy traveler. 32. Maybe you would like something. Instead of saying “Giving me a hamburger,” say, “Could I have a hamburger, please?” or “I’d like a hamburger.” English speakers often use the expressions “please” and “thank you”. When requesting something, use “Can I” or “Could I”. In formal situations, “May I” is the best. 33. When someone asks your opinion, you don’t want to make them feel upset by saying something they think is unkind. Maybe someone asks, “What do you think of my idea?” Don’t say, “It’s a terrible idea,” if you don’t like it. Say, “I don’t think it’s the best idea.” Then people will accept your opinion more easily. 34. When you can’t accept an invitation, don’t say, “I can’t. I’m busy.” Refuse in a more indirect way, “I’m afraid I can’t …” or “I’d love to, but…” or “That sounds great, but …” These phrases soften the message and make it easier to accept. 35. Avoid saying others have done wrong. Don’t say, “You don’t understand me.” Say, “Maybe I need to make clear what I mean.” Give special attention to “I” or “We” rather than “you”. Take time to learn polite phrasing. Then you’ll make your communication with people more pleasant. 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分25分) 第一节:完形填空 (共15小题,每小题1分, 满分15分) 通读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后在各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出一个最佳选项。 Jonathan had broken my favorite azalea (杜鹃花)bush before I could stop him.
