In America, it’s very common for people to become voluntary workers. It is very much a part of the American way of life to donate one's time and services. Most charitable activities are organized by churches and groups around the nation and even encouraged by the government. The helping hand is extended to the poor, the homeless and the disabled. Some people work to teach children how to read. Others open up soup kitchens to feed the homeless. Volunteers also take care of the disabled by making reading tapes for the blind and working in orphanages (孤儿院) to help children without parents.
High school students are often encouraged to become volunteers and many school club activities center around volunteer services. Students may work with disabled children during a summer program, or participate in a club activity which helps to bring meal to senior citizens who are shut-ins. With their sense of idealism (理想主义) students are often eager to donate their spare time. They see such activities as a way of becoming involved in the community and the adult-world. Social action for them becomes as important as their academic studies.
Fund raising drives are also conducted by schools and community groups to raise money for a worthy cause. They may respond to a recent earthquake in a foreign country, a flood somewhere within their own, or another natural disaster which has left people destitute and homeless. Today even the Halloween custom of 'trick or treat' has become an occasion to collect money for a charitable cause.

Sugar is a poison and should be controlled like alcohol and cigarettes to protect public health, according to researchers, who maintain in a new report that sugar is fueling a global obesity pandemic, contributing to 35 million deaths annually worldwide from non-communicable diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
The U.S. authors warn that obesity is a bigger problem than malnourishment(营养不良) ，and that sugar is far from "empty calories" that make people fat，but also changes metabolism, raises blood pressure, critically alters the signaling of hormones (荷尔蒙) and causes significant damage to the liver（肺）.
The authors of the article, The Toxic Truth About Sugar, led by Robert Lustig, a childhood obesity expert at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), says that, like alcohol, sugar is widely available, easily abused and harmful to society.
They say teaching children about diet and exercise is unlikely to be effective, and instead, the answer lies in taxes and other regulations. The study suggests doubling the price of sugary drinks, restricting their sale to those over 17 or 18, and tightening regulations in schools and snack bars.
The article also reveals that worldwide consumption of sugar has tripled (增长三倍)during the past 50 years and is viewed as a key cause of the obesity epidemic. It concludes that responsibility lies in the food companies, saying that while they may resist change, shift in policy are possible if the pressure is great enough.
