Hoffman, 40, a former senior vice president of a financial company，had what she describes as “one of those extreme jobs”. “I loved working,” she says. But her career path reached a crossroad when her second child was born, and she left her job in February 2007. Hoffman is one of many people who have left the work force to take a break，but she has a position as a consultant. She has described this type of career detour (绕路)，which is more common for women than for men，as “off­ramping (驶出坡道)”．Typically it occurs when the balancing act of parenting and work becomes too tough.
A study by a research center found that more than 90 percent of women who off­ramp want to on­ramp back into the work force eventually. But making the transition back to work is rarely easy，and it is even harder in this economic climate of layoffs and hiring freezes.
Considering some of the difficulties faced by on­rampers，a three­day program called “Greater Returns：Restarting Your Career” was held at Columbia University. The goal of the three days was to have them walk away with a big shot of confidence.
According to one school of thought, women looking to make a comeback might even have an advantage in the current economy, especially if they are looking for part-time or consultant positions that do not offer benefits. And a majority of on­rampers are women with wide working experiences that could give them a slight advantage over less­experienced competition.
“You absolutely cannot be defensive about why you off­ramped,” Ms. Hoffman says. “Defensive” would have put her into a hard situation if the Greater Returns program had not taught her how to describe the years she spent at home. “I now feel confident of talking to an employer and saying，‘Yes，I have been out of the work force，but here is where I can make significant contributions.’”

An American shopper, Emma Mumford, who was named “the Coupon(优惠券)Queen” has spent just £350 on a luxury(奢侈) Christmas for her and her family—but got £2,500 worth of food, drink and presents thanks to coupons and offers.
Ms Mumford is a so-called “extreme couponer” and spends hours hunting out the best deals and bargains. She has been preparing for this Christmas since the end of the last one. Ms Mumford made the huge savings by checking price comparison websites and as a result collected more presents than she needed for Christmas. After sorting out gifts for all her family, she has even been able to donate £1,000 worth of presents to her local hospital.
“It has been so nice to have Christmas sorted and not having to worry about breaking the bank. I wanted to get high quality presents for my family and show that you can do it without spending a fortune. There is a misunderstanding that everyone who does couponing only gets products of low value but through my careful shopping I have managed to purchase designer perfumes, a high-end coffee machine.” she explained.
She said “What started as a hobby to help me save money has turned into my life and I am able to run a business helping people save money. I know what it feels like to struggle as my ex-partner had a lot of debt which I took on for him. We were in a poor situation where every penny counted. That’s what really inspired me.”

It’s illegal for the police to attach a GPS unit to your car without your permission, as the U.S. Supreme Court settled in 2012. But if the police are in hot pursuit of a bank robber or other escaping criminals that threaten public safety, a GPS tracker is acceptable. But exactly how can the police GPS track a car that is moving fast?
The answer to that question comes from Star Chase, a new police technology being used by a small but growing number of law enforcement agencies.
