Am I in the right place?” “Well, we have baskets, but they are not Easter baskets for kids; they're food baskets,” I explained. That morning I arrived at St. Michael's Church in Carmichael, California to help give the baskets to needy families for Easter. To make sure every family would receive one, we had handed out numbers to them that matched the basket they were supposed to receive. Each one contained a whole ham, potatoes, bread, vegetables, and a pie — enough food to help feed a family for a week. “Why don't you come in?” I said to the man. He looked disappointed. He shook his head and said, “I can't ... My daughter is waiting for me over there. I am grateful for the food, but when I heard you were giving away baskets for Easter .... Well, I thought they would be Easter baskets for children.” He continued, “I promised my daughter one, and I wanted to surprise her.” I felt bad, but there was nothing I could do. The man handed me his number, and I walked over to the baskets. A bulge in one of the baskets caught my eye. “What is that?” I wondered. Leaning over and looking more closely, I could see, unmistakably, an Easter basket — filled with candy, chocolate, and Easter eggs. One of the volunteers must have added it by mistake! I thought. Then I looked at the man's number in my hand. Well, he'll be ... “Happy Easter,” I said to the man, handing him the only food basket with an Easter basket inside — the very same basket with his number on it. “Someone knew just what you needed.” 21.The young man had thought that ________. A. he would have an Easter basket and a food basket B. there would be Easter baskets for children C. there would be children's toys in the food basket D. he would get enough food for the whole year 答案与解析 B 根据第一段I am here to pick up an Easter basket for my daughter.可知,答案为B。 22.What did the author do at the church? A. he was told not to take a food basket B. he was told to buy a food basket C. he came so late that all the baskets had been handed out D. he was told that he wouldn't get what he wanted. 答案与解析 D 根据第三段I thought they would be Easter baskets for children和I promised my daughter one可知,答案为D。 24.What surprised the author was that ________. A. there was an Easter basket in the food basket B. someone knew what the young man needed C. one of the baskets was filled with more bread than others D. he found that the young man's name was on the basket 答案与解析 A 根据第四段A bulge in one of the baskets caught my eye ...可知,答案为A。 B The tea gardens in Sri Lanka are actually large estates (种植园). The best tea usually comes from plants grown on high grounds, the cool hilltops with rows and rows of tea plants. The plants are about one metre apart. The plant is often pruned so that it remains only 60 to 90 centimetres high. Pruning is important because it encourages the growth of tender shoots,or young leaves. It is from these shoots that the best tea is got. Practically all the tea pickers are women. The estates prefer to employ women pickers because they are more careful. Their thin fingers can easily remove the twin leaves and new shoots from the plants, which are the parts used for processing (加工) tea. The pickers carry large baskets into which they throw their pickings. A skilled worker can harvest between 9 to 14 kilogrammes of tea leaves a day. Usually new shoots can be picked from the plants about every ten or fifteen days. Processing tea shoots into the familiar dry tea leaves requires great care and skill. There are various methods of processing depending on the type of tea required. For black tea, the young green leaves are first spread out on shelves to dry. This process removes much of their water and the leaves become soft. After this, the leaves are passed through heavy rollers. This operation will press the leaves for juices which give the tea both colour and taste. Then the leaves are spread out on floors and left to ferment (发酵) under wet conditions. Fermentation develops the dried leaves with a hotair blower until they become rolledup black leaves. The final step is to sort and grade them before the black tea is ready for sale to countries all over the world. 25. In the first paragraph, the underlined word “pruning” means “________”. A. regular cutting of the plants B. frequent watering C. regular use of chemicals D. growing the plants high in the mountain 答案与解析 A 由第一段“The plant is often pruned so that it remains only 60 to 90 centimetres high.”可知为“修剪”之意。 26. One of the reasons why women are employed to do the picking is that ________. A. they work harder than men do in the picking B. they can throw their pickings more easily into the baskets C. their fingers fit them better for the job D. they can more easily find the twin leaves 答案与解析 C 由第二段第三句“Their thin fingers can easily remove the twin leaves ...”可知。 27. How many processing steps are mentioned in the last paragraph? A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six. 答案与解析 C 由最后一段内容可知。 28. What is the writer's purpose in writing the passage? A. To introduce various methods of tea processing. B. To persuade readers to buy tea from Sri Lanka. C. To tell a story that have happened in the tea gardens. D. To inform readers of tea growing, picking and processing. 答案与解析 D 由文章的主题大意可判断。 C Imagine that you live on a street where there are broken windows, graffiti painted on buildings, and waste on the ground. Would this environment lead to other acts of property damage or crime? European researchers say the answer is yes. The researchers say they found strong evidence that shows disorder can lead people to carrying out criminal acts or bad behavior. The researchers work at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. They reported their findings in Science Magazine last November. Their report is called The Spreading of Disorder. The idea of observing disorder has an effect on people's behavior is not new. In 1982, American researchers James Wilson and George Kelling wrote a report describing what they called the broken windows theory. They believed that signs of crime, such as broken windows in a building, led to other acts of crime. In the 1990s, New York City officials started a campaign to remove signs of disorder like broken windows, graffiti markings, and rubbish. Soon, the rate of minor crimes in New York began to drop. Other cities around the world also began to use this crimefighting method. But the broken windows theory was also questioned. Experts said there was still no experimental evidence to prove that the drop in crime was a direct result of efforts to clean up city neighborhoods. They said other influences could also have caused the drop in crime. Moreover, the broken windows theory did not fully examine the exact conditions of disorders that appeared to lead to crime. The study from the Netherlands now provides the experimental information to support the broken windows theory. 29.The underlined word “graffiti” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”. A. rude drawings B. formal displays C. public signs D. interesting advertisements 答案与解析 A 根据句中的broken windows和waste on the ground可推断, graffiti“涂画;涂鸦”。 30.Other cities follo- 配套讲稿:
