Tori was not my best friend, but she was in my class and we did stuff together. I asked my mum and she said I could go, so I told Tori that I’d be there. And then, two days later, my best friend called. She and her family were going to Disneyland for the whole day. She invited me to go with them. Disneyland! I really wanted to go...more than anything! I ran to ask my mum if it was OK. My mum reminded me that Tori’s party was on the same day. She said I couldn’t change my mind just because something better came along. I begged my mum. She said no. I cried. My mum still said no. I couldn’t get her to change her mind. I tried every excuse I could think of. My mum explained to me again--once you accept an invitation to something, you can’t change your mind and go to something else just because you want to do the other thing more. She asked me to think about if someone had said they’d come to my party and then, because something better came along, they changed their minds and didn’t come, how would I feel? So my mum dropped me off at Tori’s party. We did stuff that was fun and different. We watched a movie that hadn’t come out in theatres yet. There was a make-your- own pizza contest. We each got a piece of dough(面团)and then there were all of these toppings(配料)to choose from. We all got covered in pizza dough, cheese and toppings. We’re supposed to take a present to the birthday person and we all did. But Tori’s mum and dad had a special present to give to each of us too! That was so cool. When my mum came to pick me up, I told my mum all about the fun things we had done. She told me that she was proud of me for understanding why we can’t just dump someone because something better comes along. 21. Why did the writer cry according to the passage? A. Because her friends didn’t go to Disneyland with her. B. Because her best friend didn’t have fun with her. C. Because her mum didn’t allow her to go to Disneyland. D. Because her friend didn’t invite her to the birthday party. 22. What advice did mum give to the writer? A. To change her mind for something better. B. To explain her feelings to her friend C. To try every excuse she could think of. D. To put herself in others’ shoes. 23. What lesson did the writer learn from her mum? A. An honest person never tells lies. B. One shouldn’t break a promise lightly. C. An invitation is a sign of friendship. D. Something better may come along in your life. B American government suggests that children and teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity every day. But less than half of children and just 10% of teens meet these suggestions. What’s the deal? It’s reported that about 44 million US kids participate in organised sports(such as baseball, softball, soccer). But a new study says just one-quarter of kids get the government-recommended amount of exercise when they show up for team practices. The study, published online last month in a medical journal, says younger kids and boys do better than teens and girls. The study looked at 200 kids aged 7 to 14 who played on soccer, baseball and softball teams. The kids wore sensors (传感器)to measure their activity during practices. During each practice, kids averaged 30 minutes of downtime(停工期). “It is not clear how much physical activity is provided by youth sports practices,” say the California-based authors of the study. “Much of the time may be inactive, such as receiving verbal(口头上)instructions and waiting for turns.” What’s a parent or coach—or kid—to do? The authors of the study suggest increasing the number of practices, extending the time of practices and changing it up(加快)during practices. For example, the coach could give each player a ball at the same time. Rather than focusing on one player’s skills, it’s best to get the whole team moving. But, the study says, the bottom line is that team sports aren’t enough exercise. For a child to meet the US physical activity suggestions, the kid will have to do more than just join a team. Exercise is also necessary during breaks, during physical education class, after school and even on the way to school. 24.According to the text, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Only 10% of the teens can’t meet the suggestions about physical activity. B. About 11 million US kids can get enough amount of exercise in team practices. C. The new study was published on a famous magazine last month. D. Teens do better than girls and younger kids in the new study. 25.The underlined word “extending” in Paragraph 5 means . A. giving support or confidence B. making something longer or larger C. becoming smaller or fewer D. causing to move or go quickly 26.The passage is probably written for . A. physical teachers and parents B. doctors and nurses C. class advisers and researchers D. kids and headmasters 27.What’s the best title of the passage? A. Not Enough Exercise? B. Kids for Fun? C. How to Keep Fit D. Necessary for Kids to Exercise C Last week I talked with some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects(前景) they thought they had. Given that I teach students who are training to be doctors, I was surprised do find that most thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”. “What kind of help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out. “Surgery(外科手术),” one replied. I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job . One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it re-grows, you can get at least 5 cm taller!” At that point, I was shocked. I am short, I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of agony(痛苦)just to be a few centimetres taller. I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall! It seems to me that there is a trend towards wanting “perfection” , and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality. No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm. Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost. In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his/her chosen career. 28.We can know from the passage that the author works as a . A. doctor B. model C. teacher D.reporter 29.Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to . A. marry a better man/woman B. become a model C. get an advantage over others in job-hunting D. attract more admirers 30.According to the passage, the author believes that . A. everyone should purchase perfection, whatever the cost B. it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs C. it is one’s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one’s career D. media are to blame for misleading young people in their seeking for surgery 31.Which’ s the best title for the passage?. A. Young Graduates Have Higher Expectations B. Young Graduates Look to Surgery for Better Jobs C. Young Graduates’ Opinion About Cosmetic Surgery D. Young Graduates Face a Different Situation in Job-hunting D To Friend or Not to Friend We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realise just how important social networks are in their lives. This realisation has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated(侵犯) when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before. A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request, “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.” Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list. 32.From Paragraph 2, we learn that . A. parents feel secure about their privacy online B. social networks successfully fill the generation gap C. parents have realised the importance of social networks D. social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate 33.Teenagers may refuse parents’ friend requests because . A. they hide something from their parents B. they are unwilling to be watched by parents C. their parents tend to fall behind in technology D. their parents make negative comments on them 34.The passage is mainly about . A. privacy online B. social networks C. the generation gap D. parents’ friend requests 35. Waht is the attitude of the author.? A.Douhtful. B.Neutral. C.Posit- 配套讲稿:
