Looking out to the sea carefully, he saw a couple of kids in a rowboat were being pulled out to sea. Two 12yearold boys, Christian and Jack, rowed out a boat to search for a football. Once they'd rowed beyond the calm waters, a beach umbrella tied to the boat caught the wind and pulled the boat into the open water. The pair panicked and tried to row back to shore. But they were no match for it and the boat was out of control. Tim knew it would soon be swallowed by the waves. “Everything went quiet in my head,”Tim recalled (回忆).“I was trying to figure out how to swim to the boys in a straight line.” Tim took off his clothes and jumped into the water. Every 500 yards or so, he raised his head to judge his progress. “At one point, I considered turning back,” he says.“ I wondered if I was putting my life at risk.” After 30 minutes of struggling, he was close enough to yell to the boys, “Take down the umbrella!” Christian made much effort to take down the umbrella. Then Tim was able to catch up and climb aboard the boat. He took over rowing, but the waves were almost too strong for him. “Let's aim for the pier (码头),” Jack said. Tim turned the boat toward it. Soon afterward, waves crashed over the boat, and it began to sink. “Can you guys swim?” he cried. “A little bit,” the boys said. Once they were in the water, Tim decided it would be safer and faster for him to pull the boys toward the pier. Christian and Jack were wearing life jackets and floated on their backs. Tim swam toward land as water washed over the boys' faces. “Are we almost there?” They asked again and again. “Yes,” Tim told them each time. After 30 minutes, they reached the pier. 21.Why did the two boys go to the sea? A.to go boat rowing. B.to get back their football. C.to swim in the open water. D.to test the umbrella as a sail. 22.What does “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.the beach. B.the water. C.the boat. D.the wind. 23.Why did Tim raise his head regularly? A.to take in enough fresh air. B.to consider turning back or not. C.to check his distance from the boys. D.to ask the boys to take down the umbrella. 24.How did the two boys finally reach the pier? A.They were dragged to the pier by Tim. B.They swam to the pier all by themselves. C.They were washed to the pier by the waves. D.They were carried to the pier by Tim on his back. B People believed for a long time that the heart was the center of a person's emotions. That is why the word "heart" is used in so many expressions about emotional situations. One such expression is to "lose your heart" to someone. When that happens, you have fallen in love. But if the person who won your heart does not love you, then you are sure to have a "broken heart." In your pain and sadness, you may decide that the person you loved is "hard-hearted," and in fact, has a "heart of stone." You may decide to "pour out your heart" to a friend. Telling someone about your personal problems can often make you feel better. If your friend does not seem to understand how painful your broken heart is, you may ask her to "have a heart." You are asking your friend to show some sympathy for your situation. Your friend "has her heart in the right place" if she says she is sorry, and shows great concern for how you feel. Your friend may, however, warn you not to "wear your heart on your sleeve." In other words, do not let everyone see how lovesick you are. When your heart is on your sleeve you are showing your deepest emotions. If your friend says "my heart bleeds for you," she means the opposite. She is a cold-hearted person who does not really care about your situation. In the ever-popular motion picture, "The Wizard of Oz,"(绿野仙踪) the Tin Man seeks a heart. He wanted to feel the emotion of love, and was seeking help from the powerful Wizard of Oz to find a heart. The Cowardly Lion, in the same movie, did “have a heart”. But he lacked courage and wanted to ask the Wizard of Oz to give him some. You could say that the cowardly lion was "chicken-hearted." That is another way of describing someone who is not very brave. A chicken is not noted for its bravery. Thus, someone who is chicken-hearted does not have much courage. When you are frightened or concerned, your "heart is in your mouth." You might say, for example, that your heart was in your mouth when you asked a bank to lend you some money to pay for a new house. 25.What is the main idea of the passage? A.The heart was the center of a person's emotions. B.There are many expressions about heart and what do they mean. C.We should learn some expressions about “heart”. D.It is important to learn some expressions about “heart” 26.How many expressions about “Heart” are mentioned in the passage? A.10 B.8 C.9 D.11 27.If you hear one of your family members is hurt in a traffic accident, you will feel ________. A.heart is in your mouth. B.have your heart in the right place C. wear your heart on your sleeve D.lose your heart 28.Why did the writer mention"The Wizard of Oz,"in the passage? A.To show that it is ever popular. B.To introduce a film to the readers C.To give some more examples about the phrases. D.To show that the Tin Man is not brave. C China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors — silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks (人行道).Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide. Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy.I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home. My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的).To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck. I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive. 29.According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today? A.Because they are traditional and safe. B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive. C.Because they are colorful and available. D.Because they are fast and environment friendly. 30.The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ________. A.to ride it for fun B.to use it for transport C.to experience local culture D.to improve his riding skills 31.How did the author feel about his street crossing? A.It was boring. B.It was difficult. C.It was lively. D.It was wonderful. 32.Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience? A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills. B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding. C.The author was praised by the other bikers. D.The author took great pleasure in biking. D Smoking is the worst thing you can do for your health. Fortunately, it’s never too late to get the benefits of quitting. If you’ve tried to quit before and failed, it’s time to make up your mind and try again. Smoking is responsible for one of every five deaths. That includes 29% of all cancer deaths, 87% of all lung cancer deaths, and nearly 20% of all deaths are from cardiovascular disease. But long before smoking kills you, it ages you. You can see that smoking accelerates the drying and wrinkling of the skin. But there are fewer obvious effects as well. Indeed, smoking takes years away from your life. Nearly half of all chronic smokers die an average of 20 to 25 years before their time. Besides an early death from cancer or heart disease, smoking can cause lung disorders. People who smoke over a pack a day have almost three times the risk of contracting pneumonia (肺炎) than that of nonsmokers. By lowering levels of estrogen (雌性激素) in men and women, smoking speeds bone less. If a woman smokes a pack of cigarettes every day, she will enter menopause (更年期) with 5% to 10% less bone mass than a nonsmoker. The good news is that no matter what your age is or how long you’ve smoked, you’ll live longer if you quit today. The Coronary Artery Surgery Study examined nearly 2,000 longterm smokers over the age of 54. Those who quit had significantly lower death rates six years later than those who didn’t. Even the oldest exsmokers had a higher survival rate. Not only will you live longer if you quit, but you’ll feel better, breathe easier, and find that you have more energy. You’ll have fewer respiratory infections, headaches, and stomachaches. What’s more, you’ll save money. Your clothes and breath won’t smell unpleasant any longer. And your habit won’t annoy, or threaten the health of the people who live and work with you. 33.According to the passage, the percentage of deaths due to smoking is ________. A.20% B.25% C.29% D.87% 34.All of the following methods are used in the passage EXCEPT ________. A.giving examples B.mentioning famous sayings C.comparing D.listing numbers 35.What do we know from the Coronary Artery Surgery Study? A.It examined about 2,000 smokers who all quit smoking finally. B.Quitting smoking is easier said than done. C.longterm smokers who quit smoking can live longer. D.Quitting smoking has a bad effect on people’s health. 第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。其中有两项为多余选项。 Although problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or the other, you’ll have to stand up and say – problem, I don’t want you in my life. 36 Problems with friends, parents, girlfriends, husbands, and children – the list goes on. Apart from these, the inner conflicts within ourselves work, too. These keep adding to our problems. Problems come in different shapes and colors and feelings. But good news is that all problems can be dealt with. Now read on to know how to solve your problems. Talk, it really helps. What most of us think is that our problem can be understood only by us and that no talking is going to help. 37 Talking helps you move on and let go. Write your problems. 38 When you write down your problems, you are setting free all the tension from your system. You can try throwing away the paper on which you wrote your problems. By doing this, imagine yourself throwing away the problems from your life. Don’t lose faith and hope. No matter what you lose in life, don’t lose faith and hope. Even if you lose all your money, family… you should still have faith. 39 Your problems aren’t the worst. No matter what problem you get in life, there’re another one million people whose problems are huger than yours. 40 Your problems might just seem big and worse, but in reality they can be removed. Go about and solve your problems because every problem, however big or small, always has a way out. A. Of course, we’ve been fighting troubles ever since we were born. B. When we have a problem, a pressing, critical, urgent, life-threatening problem, how do we try and solve it? C. Having a personal diary can also be of huge help if you don’t want a real person to talk with. D. But the truth is that when you talk about it, you’re setting free the negative energies that have been gathering within you. E. We can often overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack. F. Tell yourself: when they can deal with them, why can’t I? G. With faith and hope, you can rebuild everything that you lose. There was once a group of young people searching everywhere for happiness but what they got was only annoyance, grief and misery.
